  • I get inspired to make something good out of my life each time i see this scene..

  • A most powerful scene in a wonderful movie.

  • So ironically true...

  • Guilty....

  • @MrHappyniceboy Indeed... This is the kind of movie scenes that make you think... My biggest fear now, is not to die or whatever... But it is to waste my life...

  • Guilty.

  • Bco 1/1 2nd Plt USMC

  • This is just amazing,,, the whole movie is beyond amazing.. Love it

  • i will never forget this scene.

  • Wow, that was a really deep scene, I love this movie.

  • In a word Sublime

  • he is the marlon brando of his generation

  • "I accuse you...of a WASTED LIFE!"

Perhaps the greatest line in all of movie-dom.

  • i almost cried

  • Deep stuff and true......

  • They say Nazi prison camps were nasty... What do they say about this civilised prisons then, ha? Those bloody hypocrites have nothing to say...

All this stuff is the same, so why to make a difference? Where is specific and odious crime of Nazi regime then? Is that any strange or unusual crime you do blame Nazi criminals, which you have never done yourself?

  • Great film... Hoffman's best next to Ratso...

  • Incredible good scene!!

  • It;s not always the case that a wasted life is your fault....Sometimes the pressures coming from different areas means you make some very bad decisions...I should have started a Phd 3/4 years ago but i had no support from family and i was stubbornly sticking to the belief i could get a full time job...now i will not finish it until i'm 40.

  • @Indul1

A wasted life is always your fault.

  • Reyes

  • I am guilty of my wasted life which I am not responsible!!

  • Guilty.

  • Yeah, a wasted life is not living in a way that your heart of hearts tells you is right. I think many people are guilty of that, hence the epidemic use of food, sex, drugs, alcohol, and prescription psychotropics in modern society.

  • Also I'm guilty of charge...

  • i´m totally guily of that since i´m here

  • guilty

  • this scene resembles to me not Christianity but mans internal panorama of storytellers / mythological figures in our mind, which we measure ourselves with...

  • true although i'm not reallt sure what you mean but i thinks its the way with this scen which i think is the most powerfull in this movie

  • It had a somewhat religious/mistic sens, I guess

  • strange thing though the guy who wrote the book werent religous not even baptised too christianaty though he was katholic

  • aw, those eyes ... this scene is absolutely heart-rending

  • one of the best films ever made, young people wouldnt understand films like this

  • hey i'm young and i understand this very well

  • @softjao123

yeah, but you are a girl, and girls still understands emotions.

  • i'm not a girl i'm a guy

  • No, you are a girl

  • no i'm not only because i understand the movie dosen't mean that i'm a girl

  • << Guilty!

  • No, It's not Death just Hell. Dead or alive.

  • i know how he feels

  • That's how feel some days for not having the American Dream. Hard Times in 00 decade. I wish I had a Time Machine or the winning numbers to the next Mega-Million. A Wasted young life my 20s.

  • wow this scene is fantastic, from on of the best fil ever of the universal history

  • this was the first film that made me cry..

    it's one of my favourites.

  • this scene really gets me, To me he is a not only a prisoner to society he is a prisoner of his own mind, and to all the social systems that failed him.

  • It's a matter of where he'd rather be and what he'd rather be doing - either rotting away in total discomfort in the rotten place he is in,or to be living the archetypal lifestyle in chic, romantic 'gai Paris'. Because, where he is - there - is a long way away from even setting foot again on the streets of metropolitan Paris. And,when was the last time you seduced a sexy, young French maiden in the barn of some picturesque French vineyard - e.g.. So, Papillon is definately missing out on "living".

  • I think it was about his real world life he wasted and got him into prison in the first place.

  • McQueen's eyes in this scene are one of the scariest and most difficult things to forget I've ever seen. I think this is one of the best performances on any movie, how he transforms himself from a human being into something that no longer resembles a man, more like a caged animal.

and that final accusation, is it against mcqueen or against all of us? truly a brutal film in typical Dalton Trumbo style

Oh and goldsmith music epitomises all these things.

  • If not the best, then one of the best movies ever.

This scene is the most compelling and emotive i' ve seen.

  • Fantastic movie - loved it my whole life and great scense of course but the video quality is awesome here! Widescreen Pappy? After years of late night small screen viewing, this is nice. I guess I have to buy the DVD...

  • I'd never looked at it that way before so very interesting to read these comments. To me it was man against the system but it's also about him against himself. I like the idea that he is determined to live the live he should have led. This is as important to him as resisting the barbarity and injustice of his incarceration.

One of the greatest films ever. I've loved it ever since I was a kid. Steve McQueen is the greatest and thank goodness for the talents of Hoffman, Trumbo, Schaffner etc...

  • It's absolutely about not living up your expectations and realizing you didn't make good use of your time. You regret the thiungs that you did not do and you feel "GUILTY, GUILTY" The McQueen character had ability, drive, and potential (witness how tough, determined, and capable he was in prison) and you and I feel bad he didn't exercise his abilities in better circumstances. He actually made good use of his strength/character behind bars, but I think we all wish he did so outside the cage

  • It's not about living up your expectations. It's about living outside of your own prison.

All of us live in solitary confinment despite our freedom. Prisoners to our inhibitions

We all cage ourselves from the outside world and find out freedom in dreams.

    It's about living

    Stop wasting your life.

Except for spending 18 hours on You Tube each day..that's ok

  • well said

  • The second dream is scary as hell

  • such a great movie !

  • McQueen or Hoffman won nothing for these roles? How bogus is that?

  • You don't need awards to know who winners are. You just know

  • What an incredible scene. They just don't make films like this anymore...

  • @nismogropo they did 20 years later, the shawshank redemtion, its even better than this ;D

  • its a very under rated movie and storry , its a gr8 story for humanity

  • This movie is really very under-rated.

  • Great scene about a LIFE not lived up a person's standards and the regrets of the failure to achieve what one should. We lucky ones, who have options, have the imperative to live to spec - to our specifications of the GOOD.

  • A great scene and a great message. How many of us are going to waste our lives by not living up to what we could be? As for me - guilty, guilty. Ahhh, but whilst breathing there is time to accord and correct. Have to it boys(and girls) and don't fall and fail. Be it, do it and don't look back!

  • sweety movie. sometimes you feel like turning it of but then you go like let me see if they make it. it twists you mind into another world which will make you not to blink you eye for even a second.

  • absouletly, best scene i have ever seen in a movie!!!

  • You can see in this clip that Papillion is losing his mind.

  • Not necessarily, I always thought that he was finally realising the truth. His real crime was that he didn't live up to his full potential in the outside world.

  • Moment of clarity perhaps.....

  • One of the most memorable scenes in movie history if you ask me, Papillon is unforgettable! McQueen you legend!

  • there is quiet true but your real crime has nothing to do with a pimp s death well then what is that yours is the most terrible crime a human being can commit Guilty the penalty of that is death Guilty Guilty

  • I watched this movie too! my favorite movie of all time, just got a tattoo to honor it!

  • i watched this movie many times it s the best movie i have ever seen
