Dogmas are not invented but made clearer and defined form what was already believed. Indulgences were always practiced, it simply didn't have a name until heresy reared it's ugly head where it needed to be named and properly defined.

Popes are not supposed to be a reproduction of another Peter as head of the Church. If a pope introduces a teaching that is in contrary to the gospel the apostles preached, then that pope is eternally condemned. Pope should not be another Peter, but popes should base their teachings already founded by Christ the Rock through the apostles. Imagine building a house, you start with the foundations (the foundations of Apostles and Jesus being the chief cornerstone).
@corkystorky the keys were given to Peter, not to the popes. Even when Peter was already dead, the Scriptures can speak on behalf of the dead apostles during the Councils. The RCC already deviated from the Gospel when they introduced dogmas, especially the indulgences which is a clear heresy. The popes should have continued the line of office as the chief bishop but only equivalent to an early Church Father (not Apostle, not even Apostolic Father).

the Church after the apostles died were led by various presbyters, bishops and elders, and later were led by 4 archbishops who later voted for the bishop in Rome to lead them. That early can be trusted to be holding the gospel, but later church leaders introduced dogmas contrary to the gospel, hence centuries later culminated into protestantism and reformation. To get deep back into the early church one would naturally cease to be protestant, but the RCC today has been planted with weeds.

Most Protestants even only use the books of scripture that the Jews decided were canonical. Why did the Jews decide that? This Spirit and authority was never transferred away from men to a book. The letter kills, the Spirit gives life. If Jesus can use πέτρα to refer to a man (himself), he can equally use it to refer to another man (Peter) but this is irrelevant because Jesus spoke with Peter in Aramaic and used only one word -kephas- for both Peter and rock. Check out Ephesians 2:20. There is an Authority in the Church, the authority of the Apostles and Prophets. When God gave authority to the 12, he didn't just leave it to them for that generation. God grants REAL authority, for eternity. That authority exists in today's bishops and priests. Protestants' authority comes from simply claiming it. Like the LDS Church.

You have to keep in mind that until the protestant revolt, there was only one Church for Christians to participate in...so it was just the Church. The Catholic designator had to be used once the protestants started setting up their ecclesial groups. A convert from Anglicanism, John Henry Newman said "to be deep in history is to cease to be protestant."

It is not true that there was only one Church for Christians to participate in before the protestant revolt, you seem not aware that there was the Greek Orthodox Church which did not approve of the later Popes' dogmas (as early as 5th-6th centuries).

The Great Schism was the original "protestant revolt" but since then we've seen a certain amount of re-unification between the east and the west - and most importantly, the Orthodox churches don't deny the sacraments.

Popes are not supposed to be a reproduction of another Peter as head of the Church. If a pope introduces a teaching that is in contrary to the gospel the apostles preached, then that pope is eternally condemned. Pope should not be another Peter, but popes should base their teachings already founded by Christ the Rock through the apostles. Imagine building a house, you start with the foundations (the foundations of Apostles and Jesus being the chief cornerstone).

@corkystorky the keys were given to Peter, not to the popes. Even when Peter was already dead, the Scriptures can speak on behalf of the dead apostles during the Councils. The RCC already deviated from the Gospel when they introduced dogmas, especially the indulgences which is a clear heresy. The popes should have continued the line of office as the chief bishop but only equivalent to an early Church Father (not Apostle, not even Apostolic Father).

the Church after the apostles died were led by various presbyters, bishops and elders, and later were led by 4 archbishops who later voted for the bishop in Rome to lead them. That early can be trusted to be holding the gospel, but later church leaders introduced dogmas contrary to the gospel, hence centuries later culminated into protestantism and reformation. To get deep back into the early church one would naturally cease to be protestant, but the RCC today has been planted with weeds.

This guy is funny. Does he not know that Jesus spoke the words of Matt 16:18 in Aramaic. And in that language he said "thou art Kepha and on this Kepha I will build my Church". We of course know this from the other passages (i.e. John 1:42) where Peter is called Cephas. No distinction at all. Now when it was translated to Greek the translator had NO CHOICE but to call Peter Petros as otherwise he would have given him a woman's name.

The Roman church split off of the Orthodox Church officially in 1054. The reason the bishop of Rom wanted to rule above all other bishops of Constantinople, Jerusalem, Antioch and Alexandria. His reason was Peter being the first Bishop and the Rock. All other bishops laughed at him.

Most Protestants even only use the books of scripture that the Jews decided were canonical. Why did the Jews decide that? To cut down on the amount of books Christians could point to as authoritatively prophesying the Messiah! For example, the Wisdom of Solomon 2:12-20. If God had wanted us to rely on a Bible instead of his holy Church, why didn't the Holy Spirit settle on an authoritative OT canon in the 1st century instead of the Protestants' putative OT canon in the 16th century?

Jesus transferred his Spirit and authority to men. That Spirit and authority was then transferred to other men. There is no other model. This Spirit and authority was never transferred away from men to a book. The letter kills, the Spirit gives life. This video shows you reliant on your own interpretation of the letter, opposed to the authority of the Spirit, vested in the Church of God, the pillar and bulwark of truth since the 1st century, and the gates of Hades have not prevailed against her.

If Jesus can use πέτρα to refer to a man (himself), he can equally use it to refer to another man (Peter) but this is irrelevant because Jesus spoke with Peter in Aramaic and used only one word -kephas- for both Peter and rock. Truth is not a matter for an individual like you but for the Church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of truth. Check out Ephesians 2:20. There is an Authority in the Church, the authority of the Apostles and Prophets. When God gave authority to the 12, he didn't just leave it to them for that generation. God grants REAL authority, for eternity. That authority exists in today's bishops and priests. Protestants' authority comes from simply claiming it. Like the LDS Church.

But for some reason that isn't a problem with Protestant Christianity? That is called special pleading. It's a fallacy. The Bible is a Catholic book, written by the Catholic Church, to help get Catholics into Heaven. The Catholic Church unfulfilled wrote the Old Testament and fulfilled wrote the New Testament.

You have to keep in mind that until the protestant revolt, there was only one Church for Christians to participate in...so it was just the Church. The Catholic designator had to be used once the protestants started setting up their ecclesial groups. A convert from Anglicanism, John Henry Newman said "to be deep in history is to cease to be protestant."

If U reject, U R full of "false pride" or "heretic" (still on their books to kill any1 who disagrees with their idea, "saints" R killers, "crusades" (genocides). 2. Does the Church foster elitism?
3. Does the Church take actions that promote its power and wealth that are dishonest in nature?
4. Does the Church defer to those with money and prestige over those who who are poor and disenfranchised?
5. Does the Church advocate for the poor and disadvantaged forcefully?
or Does the Church hand out pretty words to these people, and overestimate the aid that it really gives them?

It's entertaining, but pathetic, how the discussion always leads to quibbling about written scriptures. Logic, or emotional feeling is devoted to who said or wrote what. There are learned scholars who've proven that politics have determined which writings are accepted today, and when they were authored and by whom.
All of this discussion is a smoke screen for the real issue.....

@ChristianAnswers The Catholic Church should be and IS the ONLY authority to interpret the holy Bible. With over 33,000 Protestant denominations interpreting holy Scripture to their lifestyle and to there liking, this causes confusion and chaos in the Church, something Christ was against. Protestant ministers are allowing secular entertainment into the Church. This lack of reverence to Jesus and His Church is sad and very dangerous.

@DickCArbiter Just because there are many protestant churches doesnt mean that they each believe that their sect of biblical christianity is wrong....I'm a baptist, who am I to say that another protestant church like the Presbyterian church are leading people to hell....It all comes back to the basic message of salvation....read the verses known as Roman's Road....to sum it up it says that there is no one righteous and that those who believe Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior will be saved.

The Catholic Church is the oldest Christian Church that goes back to the time of Christ. The Catholic Church protected the holy Bible throughout the centuries. The Protestant Bible has only 66 books. The Catholic Bible has 73. Martin Luther threw out 7 of the books that he didn't personally agree with.

@DickCArbiter The Roman Catholic Church claims their roots back to Christ, but actually today's Catholic church in all of its hierarchy and traditions was formed by Constantine when he allowed that form of belief to be the governing church. It wouldn't be 100% wrong to say Christ's church was catholic, because catholic's definition means universal....not referring to catholic as in todays Roman Catholic Church. The early church was not catholic as you see the roman catholic church today

The Catholic church is the One, universal Church founded by Christ Himself. If God used the Catholic Church to protect the Bible over centuries of wars, fires, the burning of Rome, etc., that would mean that the Catholic Church was Divinely protected by God.
Protestants are simply Catholics who broke away from the One True Church.

When it comes to the overblown extravagance shown by the knights of columbus organization.....THAT MONEY HAS TO COME FROM SOMEWHERE...
Based on direct personal observation....they skim from every charity that they stick their nose into....from crippled kids to functions that are marketed as for the benefit of their parishes.
Of course when you do a close study of the macro operations of the church...you see that they not only fit right in...they are a big part of the problem.

The catholic cult teaches one must work their way to heaven by doing good deeds, being baptized, eating a cracker and believing it's actually Jesus. Mt 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.--I'd say they're better than you. So, does God have feathers?

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us...-You're good works/deeds can't save you. Isa 64:6a But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags. Gal 2:21b if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

@dis00612 Context Context Context This isn't saying that a person's faith is what justifies them in the sight of God. Saving faith produces works. catholics work TO be saved. Christians work BECAUSE they're saved. See the difference. Gal 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
