I remember being in a 'fortunate' position of my father having a gold 1981 3500, pre SE & VDP... It was an Auto, i thought it was ace being dropped off at school... My mates dad brought an XR3 and i can still remember the look on my dads face when this new, albeit good looking, 1.6 Escort took us off the village lights,,, Love the SD1 - gearbox failures and all
Love these rover sdi v8 they even look mean i would love to own one but i simply couldn't afford the fuel for a v8 plus they take so much time and care to keep in goon nic!
did the residents of horseford have the privalige of that awesome v8 thundering down the road the guys and girls of rpi know there shit when it comes to the rover v8 engine keep up the good work holly your the man
Great job!! Great car!! Now that is a PROPER car, not like all these "maxpower" shit things with blue lights underneath that all the silly little wankers play with after their skateboard breaks!! [People in the UK will know exactly what i am on about!!!!]
Yes we certainly do,i was driving down the M23 when these twats in seats puntos etc thought theyde try me out and there big daddy was driving a 2.3ghia sierra, well i got shot of half pint cars, but big daddy wasnt going to let it happen to him so i paced him up to ........mph and he couldnt hold out anymore and sparks started coming out the exhaust,i just flashed my lights and shot past the idiots,in my C36 AMG MERC,well.!
I think the SD1 and the Triumph Stag were 2 of the best cars to come out of British Leyland. Yes they had their problems with rust and terrible electrics but having owned every SD1 version made including the 2.0 2.3 2.6 a diesel and the V8 these cars were way ahead of their time but to many corners were cut when building them. Why oh why they didnt put the rover V8 in the stag i will never know. Great cars and a great video. Cheers for posting this. Quality British Steel.
@RPIEngineering Didn't you have back in black as the original soundtrack? I ask because I've just watched another sd1 video with that track on it. A bit unfair to block you and not them I think!
Well done on the sd1. Its great that you were part of topgears ferwell to the buick/rover v8. Its sad to see them go and gutting that i wasnt part of that episode the way you were. No envy at all....hem, hem
The music had to be changed unfortunately, as the music i originally used was copyrigthed. I originally used AC/DC Back in Black. And also this new track covers the sound of the engine :-(
Not much to shout about? You built a car for Top Gear have you?lol. Taking a scrap non runner and getting it Mid field in just a weeks time is something to shout about. The car did develop a problem the day before the race, one which could'nt be fixed in time. But hey, mid pack and not running 100%.

It was actualy Jeremy clarksons and it wasn't top gear. It was one of the other shows he did. He did a race against vicky from fith gear. She had a nova lul.
no -_- this one is the one hammond drove in the classic V8 race in tribute to the discontinued Rover V8 in Top gear season 3 or 4 i think it was. jeremy's rover started off gold and became british racing green...hammonds was black and stayed black
So they built the engine from scratch? cool, I rover bought the designs for the small V8 from chysler or GM or something I seem to remember. But if RPI built the engine from scratch, then it is a british engine I guess.
I had a V8 SD1 for a while, it was a bastard to start, water leaked in everywhere, the electrics were all shot and then there was the rust... but god i wish i still had it!
Dont be like that "British leyland" made some good cars...we dont know which...we are still looking. Even so SD1 was a great car, pity quality control was SH1Two.
No they look fantastic. Their road presence is amazing. They look butch, exotic & fabulous. They still look better than today's cars & this is a design from the early seventies. I want one!
That was a very good race. Group One Classic Touring Cars. What you can't see is him spinning round the back of the track though. Or my Dad who was racing a Renault 5 pass him on the first lap. Such a shame! But well done with the car. We are still hoping for some more Rover SD1s to come out in the Championship.
omg i have one of these parked up rotting away,i have a spare engine as well, nothing wrong with the old one, it was mantained by use from new, customer died and we bought it from the family and never got round to doin anything with it, i might just have a go now
