@oobaby85 A booser is someone who gives (donates?) money to a university (usually alot of money). Ed Martin was one for the University of Michigan. The scandal came about when Ed Martin gave money to Webber (and other basketball players) before and during his (Webbers') basketball playing days at Michigan. This is the whole debate about college atheletes being amatuers and aren't paid to play basketball like NBA players are.

@oobaby85 No boosters are not illegal. When a university receives money for their athletic departments (for example) the money from this can come from a booster. I'm not exactly sure how it works but generally I think thats how it happens and is how things are done legally. The illegal part comes in when a booster gives money to college atheletes. College athletes are considered ameateurs and therefore cannot be paid for playing sports. So when a booster 'pays' a college athlete ... its illegal

I watched this, and OMG this was an amazing documentary! I almost cried at the end lol. And I was a little disappointed that Chris webber wasn't a part of this, if he was that would have been one of the greatest documentaries. I think he'll regret not doing it in the future.
They went to back to back finals as freshman and sophmores. No one class of recruits has ever done that before. Yes they losed, but no group of five freshman has ever saw immediate success like they did. And they did more than just change how ballers dress. Colleges were never into letting freshman take over a team and lead, now every where you look colleges teams are being led by freshman. These guys played a huge role in that.

And my point has nothing to do with why freshman go to college, my point was that before the fab five it was unheard of to have that many freshman playing that much. They convinced people that freshman could come and not just play, but play very well. I wasn't talking about it from the players perspective, but from the coaches. Coaches gained confidence in relying solely on younger talent.
After viewing the FAB 5,espn documentary; I wanted to pass along a few of my own comments-while I'm not a MICHIGAN fan, this was the single greatest recruiting class,maybe ever in 1991. So the talent was there to accomplish great things. But with all due respect, what the 5 did lack was maturiity. Something you should had gotton with the upperclassman. So to conclude...I really enjoyed seeing these kids back then,and they will be remembered for a long, long time.

Yea they were cocky, but no one (not even them) thought they were the greatest team. For their age, they were pretty damn good. Your right though, they weren't the best. If they were, they would have won a championship. But the film and their legacy isn't about how great they were, but about the impact they had on the college game.

Ed Martin paid Chris Webber, Robert Taylor, Maurice Taylor, and Louis Bullock. Only one was from the fab five. And the last three (not webber) is what brought attention to the program. Also they did more than that, it wasn't commonplace to rely on freshman at the time. Look at college ball now, schools try to get freshman who can change the team right away.

Duke was just better than Michigan. That's why they won. I enjoyed watching Michigan play, but I did not appreciate their overly arrogant attitude or their style. Plus, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson were not really very good. They were not close to the level of Webber and Rose. Howard was a distant third. It was a talented team, yes, but no more so than, say, the UNC or Kentucky teams of this year.

As for getting paid, these athletes should be able to make money off of their likeness, which is used YEARS after they leave college. Next time you are on a college campus (If you know where one is), check the memorabilia store. We have currently Carlos Boozer, Luol Deng, Grant Hill, Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, JJ Redick, Dunleavy (an incredibly average player).. everyone else is a scrub as far as I'm concerned (and maybe I forgot someone but I doubt it. But now we have Kyrie Irving, Nolan Smith, Kyle Singler, and Seth Curry who I think will all be at least average NBA players and Smith and Irving could be stars

The scandal came about when Ed Martin gave money to Webber (and other basketball players) before and during his (Webbers') basketball playing days at Michigan. This is the whole debate about college atheletes being amatuers and aren't paid to play basketball like NBA players are.

@oobaby85 No boosters are not illegal. When a university receives money for their athletic departments (for example) the money from this can come from a booster. I'm not exactly sure how it works but generally I think thats how it happens and is how things are done legally. The illegal part comes in when a booster gives money to college atheletes. College athletes are considered ameateurs and therefore cannot be paid for playing sports. So when a booster 'pays' a college athlete ... its illegal

They went to back to back finals as freshman and sophmores. No one class of recruits has ever done that before. Yes they losed, but no group of five freshman has ever saw immediate success like they did. And they did more than just change how ballers dress. Colleges were never into letting freshman take over a team and lead, now every where you look colleges teams are being led by freshman. These guys played a huge role in that.

And my point has nothing to do with why freshman go to college, my point was that before the fab five it was unheard of to have that many freshman playing that much. They convinced people that freshman could come and not just play, but play very well. I wasn't talking about it from the players perspective, but from the coaches. Coaches gained confidence in relying solely on younger talent.

After viewing the FAB 5,espn documentary; I wanted to pass along a few of my own comments-while I'm not a MICHIGAN fan, this was the single greatest recruiting class,maybe ever in 1991. So the talent was there to accomplish great things. But with all due respect, what the 5 did lack was maturiity. Something you should had gotton with the upperclassman. So to conclude...I really enjoyed seeing these kids back then,and they will be remembered for a long, long time.

Being a kid who probably never got out of inner city detroit before being recruited, it is easy to see why he thought that. He also went on to say that he respected them after getting on the floor with them. Talent recognizes talent. You should do the same.

@kwright2933 Webber accepted money during his days of Michigan. Michigan's Final Four's were stripped from the record books. They think they were the shit back in the day and ran their mouths off as if they were the shit.
And by the time their careers were over, like it's already been said.... no championships and the Final 4's technically never happened.
Talented yes, but there was much better talent out there that won while winning it the right way.

Yea they were cocky, but no one (not even them) thought they were the greatest team. For their age, they were pretty damn good. Your right though, they weren't the best. If they were, they would have won a championship. But the film and their legacy isn't about how great they were, but about the impact they had on the college game.

@TheGodOfBasketball1 They didn't destroy the Michigan basketball program. Ed Martin and Michigan authorities who didn't try to stop it. Ed Martin paid Chris Webber, Robert Taylor, Maurice Taylor, and Louis Bullock. Only one was from the fab five. And the last three (not webber) is what brought attention to the program. Also they did more than that, it wasn't commonplace to rely on freshman at the time. Look at college ball now, schools try to get freshman who can change the team right away.

Yea they didn't win the title but there a whole lot teams that would love to be them. And if you think unc and duke don't give players some sort of benefit that the ncaa would frown upon then you are naive. Every school does it. Only some get in trouble. Duke was just better than Michigan. That's why they won. I enjoyed watching Michigan play, but I did not appreciate their overly arrogant attitude or their style. Plus, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson were not really very good. They were not close to the level of Webber and Rose. Howard was a distant third. It was a talented team, yes, but no more so than, say, the UNC or Kentucky teams of this year.

As for getting paid, these athletes should be able to make money off of their likeness, which is used YEARS after they leave college. Next time you are on a college campus (If you know where one is), check the memorabilia store. Also, I'm sure there are men in the NBA who are not much different from the white crooks in Gov and on Wall St. (Dem or Repub) who legally steal for a living. They have MUCH more of an impact on your everday life then the so-called “thugs” in the NBA.

As a Duke fan, I am well aware of the Duke NBA curse... I don't even argue against it because it's true. We have currently Carlos Boozer, Luol Deng, Grant Hill, Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, JJ Redick, Dunleavy (an incredibly average player).. everyone else is a scrub as far as I'm concerned (and maybe I forgot someone but I doubt it. But now we have Kyrie Irving, Nolan Smith, Kyle Singler, and Seth Curry who I think will all be at least average NBA players and Smith and Irving could be stars
