  • i have a couple of questions, first is when you apply the dye, after teh soda ash, is the shirt dry or still wet from the soda ash (i believe it's wet)? secondly what brand of dyes and soda ash do you use? and finally what's the name of the siringe like things you use for the application?

    Thanks

  • after 3 days into the plastic bags, you need to put fixer before wash it ?

  • @joaocamilooo

Some do use a FIX agent... but the Procion MX dyes are set after that time (or you can use heat to set them). These dyes are fiber reactive, once you have the soda ash in the mix, they aren permanent.

  • @WolfEchoes

    ARE permenent...

  • aw man, thanks, nobody else on youtube gave that advise! XD

  • hahah does anyone else see the target!??!

  • How long exactly did you let it sit? And whenever you rinsed it, like when you see the amount of dye that came off of your shirt, was that considered a lot of dye washing off or a little? AND if you do a bunch of shirts at once if you wash them together is there any chance that the colors will mix with the colors of the other shirts? Good video :)

  • @m3ganr0d3

I let them sit three days in a bag, sealed up (or plastic tubs).

Sometimes I go four days, btu it really does not matter by then.

There is always run off at first rinse. Some colours are worse.

I suppose less "injection" of the dye would leave less to rinse off - but I like to be sure to reach the deepest folds.

I rinse them well by hand, then toss the shirt just rinsed into a bucket of water, adding other shirts I have rinsed until I have enough for a wash load.

  • @WolfEchoes

I then quick rinse them all, and put like colours into the wash together.

Once out of the wash (cold water), I check that there was no transfer - as long as they are not in a dryer you should be ok for any touch transfers at this stage. Usually the dyes are set by day three, and there should be not too much worry on dye transferring.

Just be sure they are fairly well rinsed at first hand rinse, you should be good.

  • i'll keep this video in mind for next time, because mine always come out..not so great haha

  • Thank you so much the results are amazing nice vid.

  • its kinda like injection, your injecting the dye XD

  • hey man , sweet shirt , my colours continuously smear do u think i should let them sit for longer ?

  • what kind of paint do you use?

  • @lGASG

Procion MX are these dyes - and is the best I have used yet.

RIT, Dylon, Tulip... those are all USA and British dyes that work well also.

But Procion is the best if you can find it in your area...

  • go flames! lololol jk jk

  • If you wear the shirt once without washing it, the colors are more vibrant. So after your shirt dries and you want to wear it, don't rinse it until after you wear it!

  • is this shirt done wet or dry? please i need a response ASAP

  • Hey, Calgary Flames, I'm from Calgary

  • how do u do it to a baseball tee (raglan)

  • You fucking hippie (: I love your attitude!

  • what if u wash it in the washing machine? will the color get off and ruinn other clothes u wash with?

  • Where do you put the rubberbands?

  • What happens if you don't

match the pattern on the other side?

  • @xxmyrainxx

It can make a cool effect... worry not.

You never match exactly anyways, even trying hard.

You can dye solid one colour on one side, and dye solid a different color on the other side, when you open it, the mix is great and the pattern cool.

    Usually anything goes.

  • @WolfEchoes okay cool! thank you :] now i can just go crazy i guess lol :D

  • i just get a spray bottle add lots of bleech to the and spray on a black tshirt crinkled of course so much easier

  • Can you tye-dye a shirt if has wrods on it??

  • @NMSCheerleadingLover

    Yes... absolutely.

If you can match the screen or words with a fold or spin style it can end up looking really cool.

You can match the dye colours to the word or screen colors too...

    Cool stuff.

  • @NMSCheerleadingLover yea :) if you want the words a different color, bunch it up with a rubber band (to keep color out of it). after dyeing it the rest of the shirt, u can put whatever color you want :)

  • how much time do I have to wait for the tshirt to dry?

  • @rebecacyrineu

Well... I let mine sit a few days in the bag, then I rinse in cold water.

But time is dependant on the fixing period of the dyes (when they become permanently set).

You can speed the process with heat or steam...

After the set is good, I toss them into the wash and hang to dry.

So, maybe two days after dying... and you should be good - but three days won't hurt.

  • do you soak it in soda ash?

  • @SpreadEaglesSuck

    With these Procion dyes, yes.

I like to add it to a rinse cycle and let it spin out....

  • @GummiBearMakeup

I have on some dyes. Usually more the long thin ones, not these round ones.

Sometimes the bands are too strong to not fold in the material - and are hard to get on without wrecking the folds. String is nice because you can set the tension - but the knot can be a hard part...

  • what kind of dye is it and ware do you get it

  • @bubba97h

Procion MX is the dye (best).

You can get it at Dharma Dyes, or maiwa handprints (Canada)... go to the FaceBook group for more options...

  • WERE did u get the dye

  • @youyoujim1

I mail order mine or pick up in Vancouver Canada.

Go to FaceBook Addicted To Tie Dying... there are links there for dye in other places.

  • Can you make a tie dye that looks like sushi? I really like sushi. :D

  • is the shirt tied with string?

  • I want to thank you so much for making this video. I watched it many times and decided to try your technique out. AWESOME!!!! All my shirts came out amazing, so good, its gonna be hard giving them away. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!

    Danielle

  • he makes it sound sooo important "its like injecttion."

  • i have a question, in the beggining is the shirt wet?

  • @martinospina

    Yes, the shirt is damp.

Like from the spin cycle of a wash machine damp...

  • whoa..that final result is AMAZING! :D

  • Please share the easiest way to flip the wet shirt so it does not mess up too much... I think you do a great job!! I used to hand paint silks,

and i wanted to get into tie dyes one day. ps do you add alginate to the dye?

    blessings,

    grace

  • @Halalsilks

    Hi

I do not add alginate - but some people do.

If the shirt or material is tied well, it should flip fine.

You could use a spatchela or a flipper of some sort to help...

The real trick is to get the spin tight and tied so it will hold when moved.

Some do fall apart, and then you just try to not move it any further...

  • Please share the easiest way to flip the wet shirt so it does not mess up too much... I think you do a great job!! I used to hand paint silks,

and i wanted to get into tie dyes one day.

    blessings,

    grace

  • how many days i should wate?

  • the dye from wal-mart, back wher you get the cleaning products, is that good to use?

  • what kind of dye did you use , do i buy food coloring, what do i buy ?

  • what kind of colour did you use ?

    special name or special describtion

ps: yur t shirt lokks nice ;)

  • @TouchPodRookie

The dye type is PROCION MX...

They are a nice bright permanent dye.

But any dye will work, just some are far better than others.

    Is that what you meant?

  • this answers my quetion perfectly THANK YOU! :)

  • i got a tie dye kit for my birthday, i'm a little hesitant to use it, because if my mom sees a mess (a permanent one) she'll have an aneurysm!!! any tips on keeping furniture from staining, and the floor.....possibly the ceiling?

  • i cant get my flippin colors to be super bright! any tips?

  • @iamLSD1

Might be the dye you are using.

RIT and Dylon and related dyes never get as bright as these Procion MX, or some of the Tulip brand dyes.

Make sure you are using 100% cotton, maybe try letting the dyed material sit a bit longer, or mix your dyes stronger... more salt sometimes helps.

Or try a different dye type...

    Good luck!

  • im saying if you want sraight lines on your t-shirt would you have to just damp it ? then dye it ?

  • @taffeeable

Always damp for dying... but if you used fabric paint, you might want it dry then.

If you mean just straight lines, you could always spray paint a shirt...

There is a way to fold and dye lines, tie dye style.

You fold the shirt damp, tie it... then apply the dye while it is still damp.

I don't think you can just put dye onto a shirt, it would just spread out and blotch.

The shirt has to be folded or spun and then tied up tight.

(Not sure if that answers your question)

  • thats so pretty! but what if you wanted a straight shirt of colors ? would you leave it unsprel and just get it damp?

  • @taffeeable

    Not sure what you mean...

You could dye the shirt just one colour, still get the pattern.

Or dye many colors all at once...

    How do you mean?

  • do you wet the shirt before you spin it?

  • @vansoffthewall501

Yes, the shirt is damp to touch (not dripping wet).

You want the material to have little resistance to the dye mix - so damp breaks that surface tension...

  • hay man where do you get your dye that stuff is gnarly bro

  • can someone please tell me like what dye it is and like where i should get it and stuff

  • Dude, Tie Dying is the best thing that ever happened 2 me!

  • you spelled color wrong otherwise it was good

  • That is awesomeee!!!

  • it accutally looks pretty cool

  • he says its green but in both videos ive seen he says its grren but it comes out blue???? coler bling mabey

  • What is the name of the product you used for the color?

  • Thanx alot man, But is it posible 2 use spray paint instead ?

  • very cool, good video, good music too :)

  • Hey!! cool vid and i want to dye a shirt a solid color, and what design do you think is best? i also have rit dye.. how long should i leave it out? Thanks!(:

  • @hypergurl784 The spiral is easiest and covers the most shirt... never tried a circle in one colour (might be cool).

You could try dying a cut up sheet and experiment first...

RIT is not as bright as these, but ok. Mix it really well...

I found heating the shirt after dying helped set the dye better.

Maybe use a bit extra salt too - but it has to be disolved fully.

Leave the shirt tied up in a bag for two days, or heat it with two thirty second blasts in the microwave and let it cool, rinse.

  • that shirt is tight , dude, make me one.

  • hey man, i watch all your videos! i'm glad to see an awesome fellow tiedyer! props!

  • im really new to this but i just got really bored on the weekend n have nothing to do so im gonna go out and n buy me some tiedye!! but 1 question....how long do you leave the dye in ???

  • @minniemouse996

Well, some dyes are different. With these, I leave them two days tied up (in a plastic bag). But you could speed the process with a bit of heat (by microwaving the shirt still tied up and in a plastic bag... thirty second blasts two or three times, then let the shirt cool before rinse).

Not all dyes need time, but these ones look best that way...

  • How did you get a recording of this song? I can't find any of their SSMB live recordings.

  • @jdenni237

I knew some band friends that would tape the shows from the soundboard... I have a few other shows - but I thinhk there were only two albums, both studio.

  • @WolfEchoes Im just asking, but is there anyway you could send me that show, because I really like SSMB but i cant find any of their live music?

  • @WolfEchoes hey man is it cool if you send me the show with this on it

  • @jdenni237

I have had a few requests for this music... I have a few other shows as well.

    Great band.

    Maybe e-mail me...

  • this is cool im gonna start dying some shirts

  • how do you think the outcome would be if you did a dark colored shirts with bleach?

  • I know it will look very cool. We have a few discussions on bleach dying on FaceBook... but the spiral looks very cool in bleach. There is a bleach video somewhere ion the playlist... and a different one on FaceBook (Addicted To Tie Dying).

  • me and some friends are going to tye dye some shirts but we just want orange tye dye...will it still look like a spiral with one color???

  • It should still work the same.

    Cool...

  • hi, i've no idea bout the cost of the dyeing colours, how much did you pay them? would it be fine if i delute them with water? and how long approximately do i have to let it dry before soakin?

  • These dyes are a bit more expensive. $6 for 30 grams of dye - then there are a few other ingredients. (30 grams is a fair bit of dye though).

RIT dye is cheaper, about $3 a box - enough to make a few shirts, but not as bright as this dye.

The dyes here are a powder base, with salt, soda ash, urea, and water.

You can water them down to make a paler end result...

These sit 24 to 48 hours before rinse... or heat can speed up the process to set the dye.

  • could you use the hanes shirts for this or what shirt do you recommend

  • Yes, for sure. As long as they are 100% cotton, any shirt will work.

Hanes are nice and thick (and good quality), Walmart specials are cheap and thin, but also do work.

  • what color do you use? is blue, red,???,red again, yellow and orange please let me de color ??? in center the red-red you understan me? please tell me, thanks.

  • I think it went like this:

Orange are the first two rings ( a lighter red).

Royal Blue was the outer edge ( a mid shade blue).

Navy Blue went between the rings of orange (a dark blue).

The middle was Scarlet Red (normal red).

Then yellow went around that in the middle.

The colours are hard to tell in the video due to the cheap camera - but that is close to the idea.

  • Cool shirts. But can you use lighter brighter colors and still have good results.

  • For sure!

    Almost anything goes...

Blending the colours more is cool, or leaving white space between dye filled portions.

One way to try new stuff is just dying a cut up cotton sheet to test your ideas...

  • yea man this shirt is super sick but do i have to soak it with soda ash first?

  • With this type of dye, it is best to soak like that. But most other dyes do not need that step at all...

  • thank yoe i just did my first shirt and im letting it dry so im hoping it will turn out ok

  • now i want to dye shirts! where can i get the material from?

  • You can go to a thrift shop and buy some cotton shirts. Or try a Walmart type store for a three pack of cotton shirts (cheap).

You can find an old cotton bed sheet and cut it into four... or go to a fabric shop and buy a piece of good cotton. Thicker is better, but all will work.

  • @WolfEchoes ok so just about ne thing cotton is good then...what about good dyes im sure if i got dye from wal mart it would be different then what ur using??? but never realized how involved tie dying is.lol. looks like a lot of fun tho.

  • The Walmart dyes are RIT probobly. Not as bright as these, but still a good way to start. These bright dyes you can order online. Maybe try an art supply shop too.

Really, dying is easy... you can just do more and more if you want. Great fun!

  • thnx for the advice...yeah it looks like something i could get addicted to. awesome colors n having fun great combo. lol. guess its the flowerchild hidden in me somewhere still.

  • The world needs those kids to slip out and be seen! (Too much darkness out there these days). Live happy and DYE WELL!

  • @WolfEchoes I know you meant "practicing" with the cut up sheet but YOU GAVE ME AN IDEA! Wouldn't it be cool to have tie-dyed bedsheets? I might just try it!!

  • q paja, great!

  • when i try this, it always leaves lots of white when i am finished (after unfolding) should i go over the dye again and again and try to soak it in more or let it sit?? i dont know :( answers??

  • White in the middle of the folds or spins definately means not enough penetration. Be sure the shirt or material is damp, and try to have it elevated on something that lets any extra drip through (not pool). Apply slow, let it sink in and spread out a bit... add a bit extra again if you are worried about penetration...

It just takes a bit of practice and you will get that fixed up.

  • thankyou :)

ill try it next time i do tie dye :)

  • Im sure regular food colouring would run off the material so what would you recomend buying actually like . dye ?

  • Yes... dye is best. Watered down fabric paint can also work, depending on the type. These dyes are Procion MX dyes (similar to Darma dyes)... but the folds and spins in all these videos can be used with any type of dye.

  • Hey i really like this song can u pleaz tell me what its called cant find it. thanks

  • The band is She Stole My Beer.

They stopped recording a few years back (maybe ten now).

Pablo Picasso is the name of this song, a live version. "Sparks Off The Guard Rail" and "Mule" are their two albums.

  • thanks heaps

  • where can i buy the dye from?

  • I get mine in Vancouver (Maiwa Handprints)... they also mail order anywhere.

There is also Dharm Dyes in the USA... and others world wide.

One place to look for other ideas on dye is Facebook's group "addicted to tie dying".

  • wow! that looks great when its finished!! good job!

  • Great Great Great Vid :)

  • hey when you're doing the dying part, in the bottom of the box that collects the excess dye, were those tshirts in there? what folding had you done to them? and did they turn out to look cool or some gross mixed up color..?

  • That is just old newspaper for the most, maybe a papertowel or two...

Nothin planned or special - but not a bad idea. The only problem is that the dye dripping would be so random, it may not produce any type of pattern.

  • I like the technique of spinning around the table better it looks really fun and good job by the way.

  • What do you suggest is the best way to Tie-Dye for a First-Timer? i would really appreciate it

  • The basic spiral is the easiest.

You can buy simple dyes at any craft store and many grocery stores (or mailorder for the higher end dyes).

If you can not get the little bottles, any pouring item will do.

This way in the video is pretty easy.

Another thing for first time is to use bed sheets (cotton) cut into squares and used as practice.

You can get your feel for dying on the material before you move on to real shirts.

  • Thanks alot!

  • @WolfEchoes hey im in aus can i get dyes at wollies orrr supermarket also what dye should i look for?

  • I am not sure in Aus... but most of these dyes can be mail ordered to you.

Maiwa Handprints in Vancouver or Dharma dyes in California are two places I know. RIT and DYLON are a cheaper warm water dye - not as bright, but still useable.

Procion MX is the best I have found to date.

Go on FaceBoopk to "Addicted To Tie Dying"... there may be some info there also for ordering dyes worldwide.

    (Keep me posted)

  • spotlight has an okay range of dyes and some tie dye kits if you wanted to have a look there :)

  • @itsonlyana thanks :)

  • whats the song called?

  • That is a BC band (no longer together) called: She Stole My Beer.

The song is called Pablo Picasso (as I recall).

This version is not excellent, but still good.

They were an awesome band to see... boogey big time.

They did put out one CD called "Sparks Off The Guardrail".

  • ok thanks

  • what kind of dye do u use

  • these are PROCION MX dyes.

  • where did you get that squeeze bottle pls tell me!!!!ill give you 2 days starts now!can i use cheese bottles?

  • You can buy those at a craft supply shop or an artist supply shop.... maybe Walmart or a larger department store in their arts and crafts area.

Any bottle or container with a lid you can spill dye out of in a tight or precise way will work fine.

Not sure what a cheese bottle is, sorry.

  • how long do you have to wait untill u can open the spiral to wash?

  • With these dyes, I wait three to five days. But you can speed up the process with a bit of heat (steam).

Some dyes are instant permanent, but most need some time or heat to fully set...

  • Nice T-shirt! :D

Can somebody translate this in german?:D

  • Thanks for the video. It helped me out quite a bit. Beautiful shirt.

  • nice shirt man 5/5!!!

  • Hey what type of dye did you use?

  • hey wat was the song in the previous video called? it sounds like john butler trio. wat was the title of the song?

    thanks

  • I believe that was John Buttler... but it was considered not for sharing, and I had to re-make the vid with a new sound track.

I will get back to you... I have to remember where that original file is...

  • thanks that was a nice clear vid on how to do the spiral.

  • dats good!!

  • dude your videos are simply awesome

  • use clean tlires it leaves a tighter swirl

  • ..somebodys a hippi :P

  • that is fresh

  • some mustakies r the best that evr happen

    tru

  • great :) thanks for sharing ur video!!

  • Hey,

did you use the soda ash mix to wash this before dying?

    thanks alot

  • Yes, I add some to the rinse cycle of the wash... and let it spin out damp (not rinse out).

That is for these Procion MX dyes... not all dye needs that soda ash (but it may not hurt).

  • thanks alot dude, yeah i just ordered some of those dyes, so yeah thanks alot for all your answers :)

  • after you wait a couple of days with the shirt in the bag and you take it out will the colors mix if you put them in the washing machine right away??

    or do you rinse them??

did you dip the shirt in soda ash water??

  • I rinse the shirt still tied up in the sink, thne allow it to open as I keep rinsing.

It is here you find if your dyes were good or not... some colour will wash out, but the main colours should stay where they are.

It is then I put the shirt in the wash on cold.

The soda ash I add to the shirts in the pre-dye applying time. Usually in the rinse cycle - after the main rinse when the machine refills before last spin - I add soda ash and then and let the machine spin damp the mixture.

  • what happens if i dip the shirt in soda ash water, then dye it and then open it up and let it dry and then wash it??

  • You do not have to add soda ash to the shirt if it is already a part of your dye mixture. I do... but it is not necessary.

I think it helps more though...

The shirt needs to only be damp - not dripping wet. You could try it and see what happens - maybe use a sheet for practice first (cut into smaller squares).

  • Oh, nevermind the batching. your other videos didnt explain it so i was just wondering

  • Hey.

What type of yellow do you use from the Procion MX series?

and can you please explain "Batching"?

    Thanks alot.

  • I am not sure which yellow I may have used.

I believe I only had "yellow" and "golden yellow" at the time.

I am sure that dye was just the plain yellow.

And as you may know now, batching is just the setting time - I use a plastic bag and allow the material to sit tied for a few days (or a week) in the bag.

There is a video on FaceBook that talks of using procion MX dyes...
