  • Absolutely beautiful!!!!

  • Amazingly beautiful singing! Thank you for posting.

  • I didn't know her acting was so good!

the face expression... as convincing as Callas in italian opera...

    and so beautiful :)

  • The word Arabellisima is true! I cannot find a word to express her singing and acting in this live movie.

  • THE Arabella.

  • She has a following aftertone or note that trails on some notes - it happens often. It's almost as if another note is in the making; about to take place....but it doesn't but you can still hear it fleetingly. It rings with a harmonic fabulousness. Her tamber is so pearlescent, it's truly beautiful. She's not afraid to sometimes "speak" versus "sing". Her voice will sometimes hit that harmonic note/overtone - whoa!

  • I think her singing voice is the best in this Opera

  • @miyaling : Yeah, this and all the other stuff she sang:)

Can't help myself, altho' there are great singers of today who agree with you or rather say that she is the best example, to quote Renee Fleming, of the best that can be done in ARABELLA. She is sublime.....

  • Stop being such a misery. I adore della Casa but in recent years at Covent Garden we've had Lucia Popp, delightful, Studer, whom I didn't see but she was very well received, Kiri and Mattila, who were both very good.

  • @tightlygagged You are so right on, thanks for this albeit raucous critique!

  • @tarstan So many light voices are ruined by this kind of forcing to bigger-voiced roles (or heavy ones moving to soprano roles, i am thinking of Christa Ludwig singing Leonora and, i believe, Isolde!) Thanks for your comments! Popp was perfect as a light lyric coloratura. Strangely, Rothenberger didn't seem to ruin her voice by singing heavier roles, but who could surpass her in the light ones her voice was made to sing?

  • @mckavitt You are right of course but there are many examples of singers who were wonderful in roles that were theoretically too big for them. I'm sure you'd agree. As regards Arabella, I simply wanted to point out that there have been some lovely ones who are not dead (or over 90). These things are subjective of course and it can be fun to debate them, although not with tightlygagged.

  • @tarstan Here YOU are right of course, but della Casa, bless her, is still my favourite, dead or alive. Thanks for responding.

  • that comment was cut off. The fact that you can listen to della Casa and Ursuleac , and then trot out Cheryl STUDER as an example of anything other than incompetent, ugly, embarrassingly unprofessional singing is very disturbing.

  • Pay attention. I'm only going to say this once. CHERYL STUDER can barely produce a tone; she is utterly devoid of correct vocal technique, she knows nothing about the art, has no mind, and is the possessor of an instrument which is mediocre at best. Yes, della Casa is the last. The fact that you can listen to della Casa and Ursuleac, for whom Strauss created four operas and who was considered the ideal Strauss soprano as long as she sang, is very disturbing. Please learn to hear.

  • Sadly, the very last Arabella. For those who have heard Ursuleac, the astouding singer who created four Strauss roles and sang virtually all the rest, della Casa is the last in the succession which is completely dead now, never to be revived.

  • I recently uploaded Ursuleac's 'Mein Elemer' and also her Schlussszene from Capriccio. But is della Casa truly "the last"? To debunk that notion/myth, please listen to the two 'Mein Elemers' I uploaded featuring CHERYL STUDER, one from 1996, the other from 1999 (I particularly prefer the latter). Pay attention. Anyway, all the aforementioned tracks are on my channel. Search for them and enjoy.

  • goodness such a joy of singing...almost convinces me that Strauss is first rate.

  • Oh? What string would put Richard Strauss in?

I usually find that people who don't like Richard Strauss are akin to people who don't like fine dining.

  • Such an artist! So secure in her vocal production and the style of R. Strauss. Yes, we have had many fine a fine Arabella, but this is very special.

  • Arabella has been blessed by many a wonderful Straussian soprano with good looks but top four will always be IMHO Della casa, Te Kanawa, Mattila and Fleming..not necessarily in that order!:)

  • Simply amazing

  • Doesn't get any better, does it. Amazing indeed.

  • Thank you so much for posting this treasure.

  • WHAT A TREAT. Della Casa was a superb artist.

And she was every bit as great or better than Schwarzkopf.

  • She was indeed and that is not a negative comment about Schwarkopf.

  • Voice, technique, musical refinement, perfect understanding of the style, personal beauty and elegance, complete identification with the role... a miracle which was then often taken for granted.

    A moving video indeed.

  • Could we have her "Aber der richtige"?

  • She just KNOWS how Strauss's melodies work.

  • Perfection to listen to - and to look at. One of the singers I would most like to have seen. Thank you so much.

  • addicitive, beautiful lady and singing

  • Her voice floats so gorgeously, a true soprano.

  • Oh this is perfection.... Thank God this live recording exists, a lesson for all of us (and for today's stage directors!)

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Much appreciated!

  • Lisa della Casa is wonderful in this role. Brava!

  • She was just made for this role. Perfect.
