But our cat and mouse, by 1949, had become "screen stars", and could do ANYTHING within their "framework" (Tom also found himself pitted against Jerry as a "mer-mouse" the same year). The ending is a reminder that, even though he's supposed to be chasing [and sometimes tormenting] Jerry, Tom actually LIKES him, and admires the fact Jerry will stick up for him, no matter what.
