Man, Baby Jane is screwed up. She has multiple personality disorder, expecially when she talks like a little girl to Elvira. She's a drunk living in a past that wasn't very good to begin with. Her embarassing rehashing of her childhood stardom when Victor Bruno comes to work is hard to watch. Now, that's acting at it's best.
Goshhhhh!! looove Her preformance here!! That first take of her on the bottom of the stairs is awesome I liked when she says " i wont and u kant make me... Im not afraid of you!" -333 bette davis!!
Man, this was great acting. Bette Davis acted like the small little girl Baby Jane once was. In the old days, they would never actually show the hammer hit the head or in a shower scene the knife slashing the victim, they left it all up to the audience. That is why they were so good.
When I saw this when I was a child, my mother turned to me and said, That's why you don't ever say what you are going to do. Just do it!" Never forgot that, either.
@doc90ful There is a British remake of this film I think with the same title made in the 90s maybe but please not any more remakes! This is perfect the way it is with two fabulous actresses!
Elvira probably didn't know that Jane was capable of doing that with the hammer, and was so focused on getting the key to the door, that she put the hammer down.
That was Blanche's only hope--I'm sad that Elvira was murdered.
Blanche could have saved herself a lot of trouble if she'd had only told Jane the real truth. "Oh what a tangled web we weave; when we first practice, to deceive."
@ficklefun - Well if this were for real, it's quite possible Blanche may have been treated better by Jane ... even if she is a crazy loon. Both were obviously jealous of one another. Jane's mental issues made it that much worse for Blanche. Always a good idea to treat others as you would want to be treated. Of course if Blanche had not been so devious to begin with, Jane's character would have been less dramatic and the movie would not have had the same impact.
Poor Elvira, she was a tough woman, she definitely should have held the hammer rather than putting it on the table. She was such a bad ass (I can't think of what else could describe it) when she called Jane out.
Poor Elvira:( Jane gets hers on the beach when Blanche finally tells her the truth what happened. "Then you mean, all this time, we could have been friends?"

Elvira = smart lady who did a very dumb thing. Turned her back to an obviously dangerous woman, and put a hammer in front of her.
Shows that even the smartest of us can have idiot moments... Elvira's cost her the back of her skull.

@emeraldvenus Considering Jane's a psychopath, I highly doubt that would do much help.
