Okay, I like some good honest jazz like this just as much as the next person. But I just don't understand how Herbie Hancock's score for 'Round Midnight beat out Ennio Morricone's score for the Mission at the Oscars in 1987. Go listen to 'Gabriel's Oboe' and tell me that Morricone wasn't robbed!
@iheartbillywilder I think you're right. Herbie is my favourite jazz musician and this is an outstanding piece but if you listen to Gabriel's Oboe you are left breathless, the musical arrangement is magical and unique...
@68generation . You are right, I agree. However, Morricone's tune has no relation to Chan's Song at all. And Morricone's music *is *not* jazz. So why the comparison?. The world is full of music gems from various genres.
@casch0101 The comparison is easy made, they were in competition for the Mission at the Oscars in 1987 like iheartbllywilder was saying. I realize that the choice was difficult having to choose between two songs that are not the same genre. In this case you have to pick out the most innovative song I think.
i can imagine that! this is a true masterpiece.. i first got to know this song by the "round midnight" movie. you know that? i HIGHLY recommend it! greetings
H. Hancock at his very best......this is one of my favs jazz tunes ever. The whole entire Round' Midnight soundtrack is stellar though..but Chan's Song is my fav from that CD.

Wonderful....what a fantastic tone Herbie gets from the piano.
heru1966 1 year ago
@heru1966 actually it's not a piano, it's a fazioli ;) only few of us can afford one like that...

@zjenas Fazioli's are piano's that's just a brand name...

@FacelessOnlooker Yes i know, I was making some kind of joke, you have to read it as "not just any piano"...

I believe it was on this night that Herbie discussed his ideas for 'Rockit'. I'd really appreciate it if someone would post that footage. Cheers.
