If somebody close by died, surely you would have been effected by whatever caused it as well? I'm gonna bag up the charred remains of my dad whilst impaired by having one arm, broken legs and third degree burns.
@55DJL - In a SHTF situation, there will be lots of casualties, not all a direct cause of the situation. Those who need refrigerated medications will be affected, many may simply keel over from things like heart attacks (especially in today's generations) and general disease will kill a lot of people who are not safe with how they procure food and water. Those in the elements who are weak from previous issues may also die. Just something to think about. :)
It's just ... terrifying to think that this is the reality that people in the Cold War lived with, fully believing that at any moment they would have to do this. This matter-of-fact tone when describing putting the bodies of loved ones in another room .... People think of those times as so innocent, but, seriously, just look at these. This is the opposite of innocent. This is terrifying.
I love these - they give hilariously bad advice! There's a display of them all in the Imperial War Museum in London, and as I watched them all, hardly keeping in my laughter I got more than a few strange looks...
@georgemetric After a nuclear attack, I honestly don't think you'd be worried about the info they're leaving out. Those chunks of lung you've been coughing up, on the other hand...
That's the great thing about Brits. If someone gets killed by a nuclear bomb, they don't worry about it. They should calmly and stoically remove the corpse, dig a trench, and bury it. It's all very polite and civilised....and now...."The Archers"....
@Kevster1993 Some of us watched Threads in the 80s instead of these films... dunno if it was a good or bad thing, at least none of us expected to survive! even if we couldn't sleep.
@Karibanu In the States we had "The Day After," which was plenty terrifying, but then I saw "Threads" on youtube and didn't sleep for a week. "Threads" for some reason seemed much more real to me and therefore more horrifying.
@richievegas01 not quite old son,the standing thinking(if you could call it that) was to seal off all major centers of population with a ring of troops around it and let no one in or out!
@tinytina789 Well, if they waited two weeks or so until the radiation had gone down to an acceptable level and went out fully kitted up in radiation suits they would be OK shouldn't they? Fuckwit.

@RageTekkMusic I ripped the end sound effect and used it for my ringtone. The easiest way is probably to use some YouTube rip software or a website like mediaconvertor then edit it with your favorite audio editing software. I used Audacity its free and very simple to use.
@hplexmark1 Ya know this old elvissong: Return toooo sender, no name, no adress, return toooooo sender. "Hey Mom, look, Granmas back. Gues you buy not enough marks to send here to hell'".
@brwhizz i wouldnt necessarily say socialist. Perhaps just terminally stiff-upper-lipped. Staying calm in a crisis was still very much a part of our national identity back in the 70s, far more so than it is now.
How macabre and scary are these PSAs. I use the ending sound as a email alert on my Iphone and one of my co-workers nearly jumped out of their seat after hearing it. Its a very unsettling sound.
Don't move the body outside just yet. If you didn't watch the Food Consumption you may have not stored enough food. Its Cannibal time..
I have the end noise sequence as my ringtone, it's amazing that people still look around terrified if it rings in the pub. It must still burned on our memory from watching Threads at school in the 80s !
@jasonpaulbradley I reckon youre right..... What a sinister noise that is at the end. Cool ringtone though, just about as retro as it gets.
I still cant believe some of this stuff was shown to us in school at the time. I can remember playground talk also ,the day after 'Threads' was broadcast.
They wanted people to stay in their own homes to maximise the death rate, both from the blast and the fallout and disease afterwards. People would have been prevented from leaving the immediate areas to ensure that whoever did survive would be the strongest and fittest of the population thus needing as little medical treatment and resources spent on them as possible.
But how do I know if it's polythene or polyethylene or some other petroleum-based polymer? P&S specifically states "polythene." Can I wrap up my family's corpses in the same transparent plastic wrap that you put over a bowl of Jello salad? Saran Wrap would definitely give you a bird's eye view of the decaying process (until it was safe to go outside and bury the bodies in a trench).
Polythene is another name for polyethylene smart arse. It's a shortened down kind of brand name created by ICI (the people that first put it to commercial use)
yeah, like i'm going to leave a dead body in my house for 5 days. has the person who made these things smelt a body after like.. 3 days..it's revolting..
True enough, but if the fallout is "hot" enough, then leaving the shelter will get you all gross & corpsified as well. This would especially be a problem if you didn't have a survey meter or at least a dosimeter to measure just how bad the radiation is, and thus have no idea how long you could safely be outside to dig a shallow grave for the deceased.
now thats somthing i whould never have thought of "move the body" what am i going to do let is smell out my shelter which has no protection what so ever.
Is there any particular order to these PSAs? I assume they would have been broadcast and rebroadcast according to some kind of playlist. Thanks for your hard work!
