You don't want to get too close to a knife wielding suspect. Pepper spray isn't an option because you have too get close to the suspect and you also get some of it as well. Taser or deadly force are really your only options.
It kind of depends on what he's doing with a knife. I have a friend who is a police officer, and he shot a guy who charged at him with a knife, and he was found to be justified. There was nothing else he could have done, he had to save his own life.
the key word is "provoked" what it comes down to is judgment and how we judge the situation at the time and how we define "provoked" in the end it all comes down to training. You don't want to get too close to a knife wielding suspect. Pepper spray isn't an option because you have too get close to the suspect and you also get some of it as well. Taser or deadly force are really your only options.

It kind of depends on what he's doing with a knife. I have a friend who is a police officer, and he shot a guy who charged at him with a knife, and he was found to be justified. There was nothing else he could have done, he had to save his own life.

the key word is "provoked" what it comes down to is judgment and how we judge the situation at the time and how we define "provoked" in the end it all comes down to training. In Canada as in the states all cops have fire arms at the ready so the option is always there, unlike the UK if I'm not mistaken with the exception of your tactical officers that would be called to the scene if needed

@JJ17070 If I was in the LAPD I'd shoot first too. The LAPD has to deal with more shit than any other police force on the planet. They up against Mexican gangs with automatic weapons. Here in Canada we are far more lucky. We don't have to shoot always, but in this situation they certainly would have been justified in doing so. This shows how professional our cops are, that they were able to take down this fucker without deadly force.

A taser is not appropriate for use against a knife wielding suspect UNLESS you already have lethal overwatch (IE a gun pointed at him ready to fire)
A suspect with a knife is exhibiting deadly force that is intended or likely to cause grievous bodily harm. The police would have been 100% justified in gunning this SOB down, so the degenerate puke is lucky he isn't dead.
