you guys are arguing about the depth of his lyrics but don't even have the word correct... it is "ignorant flippants in the congregation" ... now reevaluate your stance and come up with a new reason to be dismissive
"Fibbers in the congregation"? Really? I teach college writing and I would never accept such tripe from my students. Musically, Tool is inventive and admirable. Lyrically...well, let's just say, at least for this track, I know plenty of 12-year-olds who could surpass Maynard. I'm not hating, mind you; I love Tool. But this song (and much--though by no means all--of this album) makes me lose all respect for their intellectual capacities. Again, "fibbers in the congregation"!
@rocinante821 fibbers in the congregation you cant understand that if you teach theology please do not comment on tool cuz you cant objectively speak on a beautiful song of a son to his mother
maynard... man... i wish he wasn't so self-conscious, he's a genius when it comes to music. Tool and APC... i don't want to say "OMG SO DEEP", BUT, most songs make you think and most of all feel so much, especially off of this album, although i relate to other albums much more on a personal level and blah blah blah blahblah, this one just plucks a string I didn't really know I had. ON ANOTHER NOTE stop focusing on the religion bit, no one can say what it 'MEANS' but Maynard himself. enjoyit
I don't know why the urge to point out Maynard as a religious person. Yes this song is about his mother going to heaven but the lyrics are ambiguous and also point out some critics/sarcasm to religion:
"Listen to the -tales- and -romanticize-," and "-Shake your fists- at the gates saying:.." is self explanatory.
p.s. either way, if Maynard is or is not religious that wont change the fact that he is a very talented musician.
@ZZzzzzzWhat It's one thing to worship a god, it's another to write about a god. I agree with you to an extent, there's nothing in the imaginary creative rulebook that says you can't write songs about a religion without being religious. The only other band I can think of that does that is A7X, many of their lyrics are influenced by biblical passages and ideas.
@TheAntiFascist2010 And which are the 'early days'? do believe human are descendants from Adam and Eve? And the earth is only 6000 ears old? Only the truly ignorant believe that without questioning that.
@ZZzzzzzWhat the early days are way before that. The humans that have decended... many of them have adopted to a from of learning that is coagulist. In another term they want to feel better. The hope or idea that the can fix the things that they hate about thier lives by time travelling through a God and visiting the afterlife while still alive is the forbidden fruit. Religion, is a mass corporate extension of government that establishes control over the many while the few reap the rewards.
@ZZzzzzzWhat Those I refer to as the ignorant belong to Athiesm. Why argue with the Zombie that is about to chew your arm? Seems pointless. What is paramount to to understand the elusive device used by those in control to order the troops.
@ZZzzzzzWhat Actually it would be: mix sleep with sex, then sex with food, then food with interuption, then dominion, then more sex, then murder, then promise, then more sex.... geez, the bible is starting to sound like a hollywood thriller.
He says pretty clearly in this song that he doesn't believe. "Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance, with the burden of proof tossed upon non believers..."

@ZZzzzzzWhat The point isn't ... Maynard is religious . The fact is that Maynard's writing is so fucking beautifully perfectly cynical to religion that anyone who hears Tool must ask themselves: Shakey our fists at the gates saying, I ve come home now, fetch me the spirit the son and the father... tell them thier pillar of Faith has ascended.. Its time now my time now give me my, give me my...

@ZZzzzzzWhat - I agree with almost everything you've stated here.... still i think your missing the point.... one can have faith in God without the presence of a religion.... There are many different roads to God....
@batmannrobbie true, there can be faith in a god with taking part in any religion (Deism) the same way someone can be religious without believing in a God (Budism). Eitherway, i made that comment as a response to some users who where saying that "this song is a clear proof that Maynard is not an arrogant atheist anymore and he now is a new born christian."
@batmannrobbie yap, they don't listen. Its the urge to convert other people into their religion, they don't care for your opinion, they just want you to think as they do (religious dogma).
But like MJK said "Think for yourself. Question authority."
@ZZzzzzzWhat- That's ironic..... Christ said the same thing over two thousand years ago.... I probably should't have said that.... now will be reading posts about him being the second coming for the rest of our natural lives.... red waters....
The song is about his mother. She spent around 9,800ish days in a wheelchair from an accident. Which is in part why the album is called 10,000 days and thru it all she never lost her faith in God no matter how bad it got. Maynards views changed drastically. He went from "Fuck your god" on the "Mer whatever the rest is" album to saying other believers can't even compare to his mom.
The verses that have the same flow, and AS WELL as "10,000 Days in the fire is long enough" are so spine tingling. I wish they went that route more through the song, but still, this song is my favorite from 10,000 Days!
@HolyDeth I've thought the same thing about different songs of theirs, and then I ask myself: would those one-off moments be as special if they were a normal melody or theme in the song. The answer is always no. I have concluded that Tool knows best when it comes to the composition and arrangement of their songs. They are slaves for their art; They spent a record six months writing "The Grudge"!
Love the entirety of the song(s). This is y its best 2 listen the whole rather parts. Im sure any1 who has lost a parent 2 illnes can relate especialy if he/she never lost faith whether bein born that way or later in life. So yes give em their wings.

@Base4Productions Actually it was longer than just three years, the reason you may think it was three years was because it wasnt really a big deal until she started dying from it. So it actually was about 10000 days.
to truly get tools music you have to be empathic with it. even if you dont know the lyrics you can understand the song by the emotions that are invoked. you gotta feel the music and the tone of his voice and the minor and major progressions and you can figure out the outline of the song. not the details of it, but its overall emotional effect. the details are for manyard, the effect is for us
@thorjohnxyz56 Every piece of music has some type of emotion YOU feel from it. Not everybody feels the same way. You need the lyrics to help comprehend the entire meaning of the song. Without the lyrics the song is nothing. Just a piece of music that makes you feel happy or sad.
@clintewoodyt Yeah but all you feel is feelings when the lyrics should help comprehend the entire meaning of those feelings you feel from the song without the lyrics
Do not be concerned by biebers and gagas millions of views. Their music si forgetable, and has no intelektual value, therefore it looses interest in people very quickly. Tools wizdom in their music is everlasting and cannot be forgoten.
@apocalypso420 You have to like 'not liking things for dumb reasons' more than good music to not like tool.
Although, I've met some people who say they HAAATE tool, but I really think they're just hipster homos who don't WANT to like it because so many people think they are AMAZING. Like me.
You have to understand that TOOL's music is not easily accessible. The only reason I really embraced LATERALUS is because I persisted. Coming from Aenima, I didn't think it was bad, I didn't think it was anything. It was like a gigantic vacuum enter my brain upon first listening, opening a place to receive something I didn't previously understand. The album was a recalibration of music. Most, and I mean MOST people, especially now, like what they immediately understand, without effort.
@101tihomir well whoever uploaded this could've uploaded both if they uploaded it recently cause I heard tthe upload time is now 30 minutes instead of just like fucking 12-19 or something like that.
his tone went from mockery to adoration over the timeline between mer de noms and 10000 days. the more she suffered and the longer she remained a devoute believer inspite of the suffering, the more it seemed to melt away the coldness and anger that maynard had for her. he went from a "fuck your god" stand point, to placing his mother above all other "so called believers" he even says that no one else can hold a candlestick to her. i would expect tools lyrical aspect to change in the future
@DaUnforgiven1 Actually, in my opinion they have always been that of adoration, if you closely listen to judith then you hear that he loves her very much, and while his lyrics are filled with anger, he still adores her, and that reference "fuck your god" was talking about HER god, the "god" that her church was preaching about because a lot of people that went to that church were talking bad about her, and saying stuff like she deserved it because of her sins. but I agree mostly with this post
maynard wrote many songs about his mother Judith Marie. infact almost all of the 10000 days album is about her. in his earlier days he wrote a song about her called judith. it was on his first album from a perfect circle. if you look at the lyrics, you can see that as he grew to understand her more his opinion of her changed drastically. when judith and maynards father divoriced, maynard was forced to live with her and her new abusive husband. and maynards view of her faith was almost a joke.
@Sangriadvx about 27 and a half years actually 27 years is roughly 9855 days without counting leapyears 10000 days is how long she suffered before she was taken home.
I personally believe this song is overrated however personal it may be, if it was as personal as it appears to be then he wont be offended as to the opinions of yall the signifigance is nil , so.. that being said great song but not quite the tool I know but he is anartist and art cant please everyone
@Yiiiaaarrgh hey, how about you quite your ego for a second and listen to what im about to tell you? there are BETTER and more mature ways to purge your stress and anger than by telling people to "shut up" on a video sharing site. get it?
Justin Chancellor is the heart of this song in my opinion, the whole bass line is one of the most beautiful things I've heard. just listening to this makes me feel like grabing a fucking bass and start learning to play it.
1:58 , listen how the bass contrasts with the vocals. Perfect.
I had two losses last year. My grandfather and my cousin. I wish I had the talent to relay the sadness and pain I felt at their passing. The talent to praise their life at the same time. To honor them in song. Maynard is blessed. It saddens me to hear his pain yet makes me feel alive. Amazing.
No one really gets it, and to get it, u have to understand theres nothing to get, a child can understand this, but we complicate it, we are not ready for this world. . . . . . we are just not the people to understand this. were just in the middle of it......laught now. cause you dont understand. to bad. time will break this habit.
devilman7777777 you're full of @#4&... if no one really get it how can you explain it to us, if life is nothing but part of death and you aren´t ready for this world, why didn't you killed yourself already
You dumb shits have no clue how important this messege is, i hope im wrong, Really, we are all in for a very sad reality. Life is nothing but a part of death. enjoy what you have while you have the chance! Accept life as it is. We were never ment to be. Breath as if it was your last Breath. good bye
@Flyingninja24 Maynard's Mother was a Paralytic for most of her adult life, so the song is based on the concept of her dying and passing into an otherworldly existence where she is given her 'wings' and a chance at her deserved life once again.
10,000 days is the equivalent of 27 years, which is, I speculate, probably how long she spent in Paralysis: "10,000 days in the fire is long enough."
Of course, as with a majority of Tool's work, there are many lyrical interpretations and possibilities.
Really? I wish i could cry, my friend. You're probably strongly connected to some sort of positive wavelength; hearing a long lament like this triggers such resonance. You're not weak...your a real human being.
@viralgerm421 no i know excactly what you mean lol. its so beautiful, i honestly can say i have never heard a song like this before, tools best 2 songs.
Only the open minded can take the music of Tool and understand... most shouldn't listen to Tool for the reason of closed mind of their pathetic ignorance so as i say, weak minded should keep their christian music and stay out.
Well way to categorize all christians into one group...obviously you are the one being ignorant and pathetic if you think that all christians are close minded. I'm sorry that is your perception of all christians.
@YourDemonicEmbrace, So, is it open-minded to tell people to "stay out?" Is it open-minded to say that "most shouldn't listen to Tool for...their pathetic ignorance"? You should read the lyrics of the song and discover how open-minded Maynard has become regarding his mother's religion.

Like me.
parade 1 year ago
@parade
Most, and I mean MOST people, especially now, like what they immediately understand, without effort.

his tone went from mockery to adoration over the timeline between mer de noms and 10000 days. the more she suffered and the longer she remained a devoute believer inspite of the suffering, the more it seemed to melt away the coldness and anger that maynard had for her. he went from a "fuck your god" stand point, to placing his mother above all other "so called believers" he even says that no one else can hold a candlestick to her. i would expect tools lyrical aspect to change in the future
DaUnforgiven1 1 year ago 18
@DaUnforgiven1 He might have gone from mockery to respectful but that still doesn't change his stance.

metallica1123456 11 months ago
@DaUnforgiven1Interesting but by that do you mean you think Maynard has changed his view of religion and more precisely religious "institutions"?
mortatheart 11 months ago

DaUnforgiven1 1 year ago 4
They might have differed on existential matters, but both part 1 and 2 are the most beautiful gifts any son could have given to their mother.

Amazing.
kingrrex 2 years ago 5
No one really gets it, and to get it, u have to understand theres nothing to get, a child can understand this, but we complicate it, we are not ready for this world. . . . . . we are just not the people to understand this. were just in the middle of it......laught now. cause you dont understand. to bad. time will break this habit.

You dumb shits have no clue how important this messege is, i hope im wrong, Really, we are all in for a very sad reality. Life is nothing but a part of death. enjoy what you have while you have the chance! Accept life as it is. We were never ment to be. Breath as if it was your last Breath. good bye

How would you know if life was only a part of death? and if we were in for a sad reality, why would we enjoy life? You high or something?

Exit220196 2 years ago 3
Didn't he write this song because his mom died?
Flyingninja24 2 years ago
@Flyingninja24 Maynard's Mother was a Paralytic for most of her adult life, so the song is based on the concept of her dying and passing into an otherworldly existence where she is given her 'wings' and a chance at her deserved life once again.
10,000 days is the equivalent of 27 years, which is, I speculate, probably how long she spent in Paralysis: "10,000 days in the fire is long enough."
Of course, as with a majority of Tool's work, there are many lyrical interpretations and possibilities.

I dont cry like a baby, but I certainly get choked up...
I mean the music really connotes anger, the pain, the love, and the loss that he must have felt...

Only the open minded can take the music of Tool and understand... most shouldn't listen to Tool for the reason of closed mind of their pathetic ignorance so as i say, weak minded should keep their christian music and stay out.
YourDemonicEmbrace 2 years ago 2
I slightly resent that. I love Tool and I'm a christian. Granted I could probably never have the open mindedness of Maynard James Keenan.
ReaperOfRock 2 years ago 4
Well way to categorize all christians into one group...obviously you are the one being ignorant and pathetic if you think that all christians are close minded. I'm sorry that is your perception of all christians.
jbake212 2 years ago 2
@YourDemonicEmbrace, So, is it open-minded to tell people to "stay out?" Is it open-minded to say that "most shouldn't listen to Tool for...their pathetic ignorance"? You should read the lyrics of the song and discover how open-minded Maynard has become regarding his mother's religion.
