@grendelee They only despawn if you leave the area. When they are not in render distance, they are despawned to allow other enemies to replace their position in the memory.
tldr; if you keep close, they'll stay there forever.
@linkfan22 What I did was build the glass cages but had them together with a roof. I had the middle all hollow and led them over top of the hole. They fell in, rinse and repeat. :)
Either way, they all look like infected penises to me.
