He doesn't mention the main benefit of MSI files. Administrators can easily deploy, upgrade, or uninstall an MSI installed app across a huge number of machines in one step. MSI files are also easily integrated into windows setup. A secondary benefit is making all installs behave roughly the same way. They basically put a lot of burden on the app developer (to conform to the MSI spec) to ease the burden of the administrator that deploys the app.

I think you can setup office 2003 like you do for Photoshop cs3/4 Dl the trial and then enter in your serial number. But just get open office it's much better

Nope, the diffrence isnt xp and vista, its 32 bit and 64 bit, 32 bit uses up to around 3gb or ram where as 64 bit uses up to 8 gb of ram...

About running MSI on wine under linux.

there are installers from microsoft, that install the MSI installer system on your windows operating system, but they come as .exe files.

So if you get one of these exe's and install MSI under wine, then you can run MSI apps on wine.

FYI: EXE files sometimes contains MSI files, for example Adobe Reader 8.1 extract an MSI file when you launch the EXE setup

ripcore1 yes MSI files do not work on othet operating systems thats one of the reasons i think Microsoft did it cus MSI files are patented to only be made for Microsoft windows so as time goes on we will see less EXE files and Steam changed to MSI because they where getting so meny people asking for help with there games under Linux and Valve do not support there games on Linux
