octahedron has its moments ill admit. but I can honestly say that these last two albums have not sounded nearly as raw as what they used to put out. I think Omar is mastering all this stuff too hard (but who am I to question a mad scientist like him). I miss the muddier tones that were on Deloused and Frances. Or even further back, In/Casino/Out. Everytime I listen to that one I'm floored by its absolute power.
I never really did cite any of them. But I found all of them just in the Google and Yahoo image search engines. I typed in different concepts with the words "art" or "painting" after them and these were some of the ones that came up. Another term I searched was "surrealism" or "expressionism."
"Empty jails fall from my scalp, shake the globe and "Are you purple with current? Will y ou now become the serpsnt?"
"saucer filled and emptied with pesticide."
"bury me in gold"
If you understand any of this, understand the members of The Mars volta are actually very intelligent and percept things in a very special way. All of their lyrics are exaggerations, plays-on-words or exact descriptions, but with tied meanings.
Yeah, they use a different kind of language than everyone else. Its very impressionistic. They try to take abstract feelings and concepts and symbolize them with their own metaphors they create. Its fascinating.
I've been an At The Drive-In fan all the way through Octahedron, and I continue to be a fan. If I had any say on the meaning of this particular album, it would be with what I call the "New World Order". They have countless references as :
And for that "New World Order" thing you could very well be right. I have no idea on any of the videos I've made of what is actually being said (other than Bedlam in Goliath- on the surface level). But I just take stuff I've heard them say or stuff I've heard other people say about their albums and I kind of run with it. These are more fun to listen to when you pick out what you think it means, even if you're wrong. You probably know more than I do. Thanks for all those references.
One of them is a photo of the Taliban, I think. Just supposed to reflect that "evil" that some organizations can have. Plus, the lyrics say something like "let the wheels burn" and guess what the photo is of? I don't know if that's literally what the lyrics meant but I chose that photo anyway. The fourth photo I have no idea. I think I searched for "kidnapping" in the Bing search engine and that came up.
Yeah, I heard that somewhere when I was trying to research this a little so I didn't get the synopsis totally wrong and sound like an idiot. The lyrics are always hard to understand, its more of the emotion behind it, and you are right, it is more of that feeling of "what happened to -".
cedric talking about teflon´s lyrics: I had been writing the lyrics and sort of testing the waters of how much I could say if McCain had won the election. I don't usually write anything about things like that. I think "Teflon" is my favorite because it kind of has that slacker attitude of someone who doesn't vote but at the same time is giving a fuck. I think a lot of people could maybe understand that.
That's awesome. Thanks for that quote. Yeah, I detected a sort of sarcasm in that song, but tons of intelligence behind it. Its actually a creepy song if I understood the lyrics right. Sounds like its about terrorists executing hostages. But that line "take them to the oval office" (I think, maybe should double check) makes it more brutal if its referring to our government...
its on the comatorium, he also talks about halo of nembutals and since weve been wrong, google it. by the way, i love the way ced writes the lyrics because there is a lot of room for free interpretation, the song is yours to create your own story, for me that´s poetry. sorry if my english is bad, im from argentina, we speak spanish
Yeah, I was surprised at how fast it actually was compared to what everyone was thinking... but of course at the same time I knew they couldn't resist...
The difference I think is that this album is a little softer sounding, but still with a high tempo. Bedlam in Goliath was very harsh sounding (although still cool).
if you have never heard of the mars volta this is NOT the video for you if you ask me. deloused is where its at!

Where did you get the paintings in this video from? They're awesome. Sorry if you already cited them and I didn't see.

cedric said this album had no specific theme except for vanishing, although apparently teflon is based on if mccain got into the white house

Wow i dont imagine that was the theme of the disc.
Well i live in Mexico and they describe perfectly the sense of fear in the country.
TMV never gets boring for me, cool album as the others

Wow man.
Good stuff and awesome synopsis !
I'm not sure if I'd call this mellow. Sounds like it has a steady tempo.
There's no mistaking any of these songs for anything but Mars Volta. Still very psychedelic and cryptic.
