genius fencing cage for the tomatoes! Now im gonna be on the lookout on my "junk day" for some of that! Great lookin mulch and smart to get it stocked up! I seeded in March and have great starters. Of course here it gets up to 90 so im earlier than you! I have a lil spot in the yard but nothin in comparison to yours! I just envy your space and your land! i dont envy the cold though! Super sonic! Wow - catching up with your garden stuff
I'm sure I'll have the enevitable tomato that gets wedged into the chain link as it grows, but I've got high hopes this will work out. I might also plant a couple of extra tomatoes in cages because I have so many. I wish the greenhouse I go to would have a "sampler flat" with 6 different types of tomatoes so I didn't have to buy 6 of one kind. I like to experiment and try different ones.
It got down to 32 here on Friday morning. I pulled the plants out on Friday afternoon and watered them and they were looking great! I don't thing those Early Girls are going to be so early though. They're pretty tiny.
Love your garden vids! I have some pepper and tomatoe plants myself. Doing this for the third year now, after watching your video's! Problem this year are snails! Hate those b*sterds! There eating the young leaves. I already tried kat litter but that doesn't work when it's raining!
Thanks jmaprins! I've only ever had trouble with snails one year. I tried the deal where you put beer into small lids and place them around your plants. That does *sorta* work. (They crawl into the lids and drown) It didn't prove to the the total answer for me though. What actually worked for me was raking back all the mulch I had around the tomatoes to the bare ground. I had nothing but bare ground within a 3 foot radius of my tomatoes. That seemed to do the trick.
The Mulchkins around here don't get along very well with each other and broke off into a bunch of different splinter groups. All of which are lazy layabouts who do little more each day than lounge around soaking up the sun.
Yikes! that doesn't sound good. I once killed a large patch of strawberries by casually tossing fertilizer on them. Apparently strawberries are very sensitive to getting fertilizer down into their crowns.
Hopefully you'll get it figured out. Or if not just think of all the extra time you'll now have on your hands for other things this summer, LOL.
It'll still be at least 3 weeks before I put any of these in the ground. I'll be repotting them as they get larger. Some of them will be really big by the time I plant them. Best of luck with whatever sort of garden you manage to find time for this season Nancy!
Someone is prepping that soil for you :O) Maybe it'll be good and wet and you can make a mud pie or two... just for fun, or perhaps you could give yourself a free spa mud treatment, or even a mud wrestling match just for a bit of entertainment :O)
Just remember vermiculite tends to sabotage the mud pies, unless of course you use it for sprinkles. It also may make for an uncomfortable spa treatment and well heating it... what DOES happen if you heat it... probably nothing. Anyway, I think its best all around to avoid the mud with the vermiculite and odds are during those dog days to come you'll be praying for some nice cold mud :O)
Actually the vermiculite in potting soil has already once been heated.... which caused it to expand to 20-30 times it's original volume. I think it poofs up all at once sorta like popcorn. It would be interesting visit a factory to see and hear that process occuring.
I just thought it was like Styrofoam. It doesn't seem to dissolve. I think we need to go on a field trip. On second thought, I'm not certain I really want to know the particulars of vermiculite (it's probably hazardous to the environment AND people...SCARY thought) I know YOU are out standing in your field most of the time so a field trip might bore you.
It'll be a while before I get around to any serious tilling myself. Although I have put in quite a bit of work on the ground at the base of the fence teepee where these tomatoes will ultimately go. This is of course where I've buried peelings for the last year. Plus a month ago I put lime there and mixed everything up with a spading fork. The grass has taken over everything else for the time being.
Very nice! I can't wait to see how it goes through the year. I started tomatoes and peppers in February, but a wind storm destroyed my greenhouse and plants, so the kids and I went to the nursery this weekend to get replacements! I've got them in raised beds with tarps overnight to protect from frost. I think I'll try to do a video of the layout this week.
Sorry to hear about the wind storm. No matter how good a gardener a person is there's certainly a whole lot of luck involved in gardening. We are at the mercy of the weather. Good luck with those replacement tomatoes!!!
ohhh ... my heart lept with longing around 3:04 when you said "d'maters" a couple of times in a row ... lordy, I miss hearing people talk right ... have to git it on the YouTube these days ... lol!
I've always made a bit of an effort to say tomatoes instead of maters as a lot of Southerners do. I didn't even realize I was saying d'maters instead of tomatoes, but darned if I wasn't, LOL. Anyhow I'm hoping for big things from my d'maters this season!
It is just that relaxed and unaware playfulness that makes southern english so much fun to speak and so delightful to hear for the displaced person -- here's to a bodacious summer plumb full of d'maters!
I bought a bag of tomato seeds yesterday, now I need to get them sown! Never grown my own from seed properly before, I normally buy plants.. As I grew 'Beef' tomatoes last year, with plants given as a gift, I will do the total opposite this summer, and grow 'Cherry' tomatoes from seed! The variety is called 'Gardener's Delight'.. :)
Pealings?? Isn't that the name of your neighbour?? Aren't somebody missing him yet??
I've only done tomato seeds about twice. I'm thinking I *might* try that again next year. It's always a little messy as far as spilling a bit of dirt here and there. And then there's the aggrevation of rigging up a proper fluorescent light. As far as tomato varieties go I've always preferred the bigger tomatoes. Best of luck with those Cherry tomatoes though!
Nah, nobody will miss Pealings. He was rotten to the core and didn't smell so great either. LOL.
Well, I'm going to sow mine in a small sowing box on the bathroom window sill, together with some Marigolds in another box.. (Seeds of which I've been meaning to sow the last couple of springs.. if they grow, they'll grow!!) I prefer the larger tomatoes as well, i.e the ordinary sized ones, but thought it be nice to try something different.. I'll try and get them in the soil tomorrow, at least the tomatoe seeds, and hopefully it'll be a video made too.. or videos rather, as they grow et.c.. :)
I was waiting for a little red neck to appear from behind the mulch with a double barrel and say "Hey boy you stealin on my mulch" :) May your tomatoes grow to be big 'n' red
Of all the tomato varieties I've ever planted I've probably had better luck with Celebrity than any of them. Those doggone things can get huge when conditions are right. My worst problem with tomatoes is blight. Hopefully this new method (to me anyway) of planting them next to a fence and pinching the suckers and tieing the branches to the fence will give them enough aeration to prevent it. I've done a lot of soil preparation on this spot so I'm expecting big things.
Yep, it's that time of year again. I'm actually getting an earlier start this year. The tomato at the greenhouse were pretty small. I asked the woman if I was early or if she had planted them late. She said I was early, LOL. I was a little late last year and things had been pretty well picked over.
Best of luck on the garden up there in the Great White North. Hopefully things will thaw soon.
Grass garden, lol. Benefits of tropical islands...banana's year round, bread fruit, oranges, peppers and a whole lot of other stuff grown without a lot of stress. Maybe i should try that fence tent since my tomato harvesting ends up in ground rot.
A tropical island sounds like a great place to live! Where to I sign up? LOL. Good luck with your garden. This will be the first time I've tried doing my tomatoes like this, so I only about halfway know what I'm doing.... which of course makes things more intersting for me:)
i'm excited about watchin the garden vlogs this year i need to make some of my own but my garden looks kinda bad right now... needs dome work. but i'm getting there. if you could do another competion this year that would be great! just don't do one where you have to work so hard. like the okra last year i would hate to weigh the veg. every day. alright have a great summer!!
It wasn't too bad. I used the same bucket every time and after a while I was able to very closely estimate the poundage just by seeing how full the bucket was. Also I was actually kinda curious for my own benefit what the poundage would be. I'm not sure what sort of competition I'll run this year yet. Good luck with your garden!
its nice to see you starting your gardening again. My green house goes up this weekend and the garbage in the back yard gets taken to the dump. I cant wait. :>
