Toshiro Mifune died within a few days of Chris Farley. Just like the death of Mother Theresa was swallowed up in the press coverage of the death of Princess Diana, the greater was overshadowed by the media-hype focused on the lesser. He deserved more than the fleeting mentions in the media.
@samuraiboxer29 sanjuro, imo. then this one, yojimbo (yep, i prefer the 2nd one). then the samurai trilogy by Hiroshi Inagaki. then the Shogun mini series, in which he's not the main character, but you'll get a good laugh at one point and the rest of his appearances are awesome as well, every single one.
@samuraiboxer29 Best samurai movie of all time is: Sword of Doom
But no body will tell you this. In that movie, Mifune also acts, but he wasnt a main roll, he was co main roll, of course he is a positive person in this movie.
Good lord, please don't mention Sword of Doom in the same sentence as this one. It's not a great movie, or even a particularly good one. A better movie by Okamoto is Assassin.
@gguagliardo Mifune was in this movie for sure. He plays a roll of a positive samurai - Toranosuke Shimada, who quotes that famous sentence: "The sword is the soul. Study the soul to know the sword. Evil mind, evil sword".
Still i thing that Sword of Doom is best samurai movie ever - no funny scenes, no spoiled stupid humor, no stupid story lines with naive dialogs,no magicians moves or godly strenght or other crap, just real samurai characters and real samurai skill and spirit. Always TUMBS UP
It's so obvious that this was the inspiration for "Fist Full of Dollars". I asked a film student once if he had ever heard of Akira Kurosawa. He said he had never heard of him! ばか ! Why is the genius of Akira Kurosawa unknown to most Westerners?
@MagnusCrustulum To put your statement into perspective, I've met an art history grad student (1st year) who said that western art's only purpose was to be pretty and an EE student who couldn't draw a state diagram for her finite state machines. Both cases are appalling. You shouldn't judge the knowledge of a community by one person. I've taken a few film classes. Kurosawa is fairly well known.
O you silly Japanese sods! Could you not drink a few cups of Sake less before flying your legendary Kamikaze attacks on the American warships? You know, though their nasty aircraft carriers are quite large but they are difficult to hit if one does see them double! For had Japan prevailed the movies of Akira Kurosawa would have been shown in the cinemas and not their dull and cheap American copies! One does sometimes not even recognize the theft and is reminded of it only by the critics.
Such a classic. Thousands of dollars in CGI can't beat this rawness. I wish they still made films like this about tormented heroes and characters that reflected the real human qualities of people back then.
@elguapotetigre Japanese movie producer also try to make film `Jidaigeki` or Old time movie like realistically today. But No one like Kurosawa`s films. Oh well ,,,,,
How can anyone put Clint in the same bucket with Toshiro? Toshiro has fire and passion in his acting, his movements...Clint is a one-note broomstick. If they were together side by side in a movie, who would pay any attention to a wooden gunslinger?
This is the man that was the inspiration for Clint Eastwood's character in the Fistful of Dollars trilogy.
I don't know if Clint & Toshiro have ever been in the same movie together, but I would've loved to have seen Toshiro as the Samurai and Clint as the Nameless Cowboy fighting side by side. Or an East meets West extrrrrrrrravaganza. That children is what we call AWESOME.
Just got this and Sanjuro on Blu-ray for Kurosawa's 100th bday, picture quality is excellent. I absolutely love this film, it is my favorite Kurosawa film after Shichinin no Samurai.
Toshiro Mifune= Bad ass yo. Fuck these new age pussy "heroes"
