wow Joni I remember the 1st time I saw you in fl.we all been in Love with you for ever. I worked at a fishing camp in Maine, there was this gal up there sounded so close to you ,, we get her to sing all night. way cool.
Great band, but someone really should have pointed out to Pastorius what a bass player's job is when playing behind a singer. He seems to solo continuously, and it is a bit of a distraction.
trust me..joni tells these session guys what she wants to hear and what she doesnt want to hear...shes the boss...not jaco...joni is trying to rock and roll here..and i believe she can do it..but her band wasnt up to it...quasi jazz guys..screw the piano solo..predictable..a guitar solo was needed here but pat is a jazz player and the sax solos are forgettable..but the thing i like this clip is joni...she had the tools to rock here but band was bland...i would ball joni
Disagree about the band. She is the boss and those guys got the reins they want. There's a bit of degredation to her as a beautiful talented renissance woman..These guys are total pros. They know where and how to go exactly where she wants them or she wouldn't have toured with them.....end of story.
Joni picked a stellar backing band, and playd how she wanted to. If you don't like it, tough. She thought it was a great idea.
Otherwise she wouldn't have had Jaco play on the last 3 of her albums and tour with her.
Jaco isn't mindlessly soloing, he's outlininng the harmony, in his groovin' fashion.
Nowhere in this song is a solo hinted from Jaco, at all. If he he to a solo, it would be OBVIOUS. He's not walking, but grooving out the blues progression, and even he even throws in some comping.
Playing anything other than root notes =/= soloing. Jaco's basslines in this are absolutely sick, perfect for this funky song. His volume is simply a bit loud on this song so you notice it more than say, Pat's guitar lines, and that's the sound guy's job.
MAN I love this concert. Best backing band EVER for her and I love every musician in that backing band. I'm a huge fan of Jaco Pastorius too. He was beyond amazing. He plays stuff NOBODY plays and he's SO MELODIC about everything he plays and makes it kick ass! JONI Mitchell is my hero. Especially this style of Joni....HEJIRA ect. MIND BLOWING. God I love this. It will always be my favorite concert of all time.
The beautiful thing about Jaco's playing is his interpretation of the bass lines. If you listen to the recorded version of that song and listen to Jaco's playing here, you just have to say "Holy Crap, he is taking that song to a whole 'nother level."
it's a light-hearted, fast blues number...for me, the main thing I don't like is that the drummer is way overplaying the song when all it needs is some pocket playing
In his reply to a comment about "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines", davidr18 wrote that Jaco's bass is "frankly annoying" on "Raised On Robbery". IMHO this dude must have shit in his ears...
Thanks for posting this....always loved this song. Hey, I live like 25 minutes away from where she was born....and that's about all that's happened around here....LOL!!!!

Jaco.....totally bulbous.
Especially those last couple of choruses.
Two riffs for the price of one.
"In France They Kiss On Main Street" (from the same gig) is,in my humble opinion, his funkiest and most joyful playing.
