  • where and when was this concert?

  • Can't find the studio version.

  • Is there a dvd of this concert?

  • Really great and thats all i got to say bout that

  • thrilling bass !

  • lyle's time to shine

  • FUCK YEAH, CARLY SIMON!!!

  • If you want the best sound listen to Joni, Tom Scott and The LA Express!

  • Hard to believe this is a live recording, it sounds so good.

  • Could have done without the intro... but she rocks, so she gets to do what she wants!

  • wow Joni I remember the 1st time I saw you in fl.we all been in Love with you for ever. I worked at a fishing camp in Maine, there was this gal up there sounded so close to you ,, we get her to sing all night. way cool.

  • Great band, but someone really should have pointed out to Pastorius what a bass player's job is when playing behind a singer. He seems to solo continuously, and it is a bit of a distraction.

  • trust me..joni tells these session guys what she wants to hear and what she doesnt want to hear...shes the boss...not jaco...joni is trying to rock and roll here..and i believe she can do it..but her band wasnt up to it...quasi jazz guys..screw the piano solo..predictable..a guitar solo was needed here but pat is a jazz player and the sax solos are forgettable..but the thing i like this clip is joni...she had the tools to rock here but band was bland...i would ball joni

  • Disagree about the band. She is the boss and those guys got the reins they want. There's a bit of degredation to her as a beautiful talented renissance woman..These guys are total pros. They know where and how to go exactly where she wants them or she wouldn't have toured with them.....end of story.

  • Joni picked a stellar backing band, and playd how she wanted to. If you don't like it, tough. She thought it was a great idea.

Otherwise she wouldn't have had Jaco play on the last 3 of her albums and tour with her.

Jaco isn't mindlessly soloing, he's outlininng the harmony, in his groovin' fashion.

Nowhere in this song is a solo hinted from Jaco, at all. If he he to a solo, it would be OBVIOUS. He's not walking, but grooving out the blues progression, and even he even throws in some comping.

  • Playing anything other than root notes =/= soloing. Jaco's basslines in this are absolutely sick, perfect for this funky song. His volume is simply a bit loud on this song so you notice it more than say, Pat's guitar lines, and that's the sound guy's job.

  • excellent audio quality

  • other then the Sax an Drummer the rest creep me out! lov u Joni!!!!!

  • U Are kidding right? Michael Brecker? creeping you out? Where've you been?

RIP Michael Brecker. I'm a huge Joni fan...she can do no wrong and she doesn't pick loser band members. Sheez

  • Think you need to reread what I wrote.

  • My apologies....you're absolutely right. Too tired to see straight.....She's my absolute favorite.

  • This song is so groovy, man!

  • Utterly brilliant.... Joni, and all of the bands she worked with have brought so much soul and joy to my life....

Thanks, Jon, Pat, Jaco, Larry, Robben...

  • Totally agree! Loved the interaction between Jaco and Pat behind Joni...perfection!

  • man! jaco's best years!

  • What he said. Also, Art of the Wheel.

  • Another gem from this dynamite band and Joni.

    Thanks!

  • I think this song was written about Glenn Frey of the Eagles.

  • Brilliant! I didn't know this existed, but the Joni/Jaco combo is pure heaven

  • Such an awesome combination of talent! Will forever be thankful for the day I was introduced to such amazing music...

  • Mitchell, her performance, with all those jazz legends. Totally amazing!!!!

  • can some one write all the albums that jaco plays for her in....

i got only hejira and i dont know if theres more....

  • Don Juan's... and Mingus I believe. And this of course.

  • thanks..(:

  • Jaco is also on the live "Shadows and Light" album.

  • This IS the live Shadows and LIght album.

  • Yeah I know.

I wasn't sure if you knew there was an album as well.

    Sorry for the confusion.

  • Jaco is most prominent on Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. The first burst of fretless bass has been known to blow speakers :)

  • "Cotton Ave" is the shit!

  • She's the coolest thing I've ever seen.

  • its such a perfect cd from start to finish

    not too many of those!!

ct and spark, abbey rd , dark side, aja

    just total perfection

  • This Girl has graciously provided the sound track to 35 of my sixty years.

    Livin Right

  • PS...sad to say THREE people in that backing band are dead now. Jaco, Don and Michael Brecker. Sad. They were so amazing.

  • MAN I love this concert. Best backing band EVER for her and I love every musician in that backing band. I'm a huge fan of Jaco Pastorius too. He was beyond amazing. He plays stuff NOBODY plays and he's SO MELODIC about everything he plays and makes it kick ass! JONI Mitchell is my hero. Especially this style of Joni....HEJIRA ect. MIND BLOWING. God I love this. It will always be my favorite concert of all time.

  • Lord, those hairstyles! Mullets! Eeek! And Lyle Mays... skinny little goon. Music is great, though. Geniuses, all.

  • That was kind of funny, those quackers that got up to dance and blocked the view of the others sitting down behind them. LOL

  • A Canadian singing about a hockey game on TV! I love it.

  • Not only that, but about the Maple Leafs losing. It just goes to show how timeless this song really is. :-)

  • court and spark

is an all time top 5

    album EVER made

  • Court and Spark, I've played my copy a thousand times

  • Me too. Love it!

  • That's Jaco Pastorius! Blasphemy!!!

  • BLASPHEMY!

That's Jaco! That's the way he plays! That's what Joni loved about him!

    It's awesome!

  • The beautiful thing about Jaco's playing is his interpretation of the bass lines. If you listen to the recorded version of that song and listen to Jaco's playing here, you just have to say "Holy Crap, he is taking that song to a whole 'nother level."

  • it's a light-hearted, fast blues number...for me, the main thing I don't like is that the drummer is way overplaying the song when all it needs is some pocket playing

  • hell no!!! I love kick ass drumming!!!!!!!!! Espacially that ride/ hi-hat combo!!

  • In his reply to a comment about "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines", davidr18 wrote that Jaco's bass is "frankly annoying" on "Raised On Robbery". IMHO this dude must have shit in his ears...

  • r.i.p. jaco, michael brecker, don alias ( an excellent jazz percussionist).

  • RIP Jaco Pastorius aswell. Worlds finest bass player!!

  • I'd love to hear Tina Turner cover this.....

  • I was just thinking the bass line is amazing what do you know it's Jaco!

  • skinny girl can get down when she want!

  • Jaco.....totally bulbous.

Especially those last couple of choruses.

Two riffs for the price of one.

"In France They Kiss On Main Street" (from the same gig) is,in my humble opinion, his funkiest and most joyful playing.

  • Just listen to Jaco here, absolutely amazing!

  • all the rap so called (artist) can never realize Joni, just too great ,and doesnt need jewelry, she is in another class

  • what an incredible video! thank you for posting one of the greatest live performances I've heard.

  • Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker, Don Alias - the best back-up band ever! For the best singer-songwriter ever.

  • Only Joni can get a bunch of #1 stars to play as her backup band, haha

  • the trumpett like sound of the bass!! WOW!

  • is that pat matheney? (?)

    Wow

  • Stellar line-up. Michael Brecker: RIP.

  • The Empire hotel in Huntsville.

  • Man this is so col, talk about old school footage. But the best of the best, Jaco and Brecker

  • This band is out of this world. What a great performance

  • she really knew how to pen a ditty and really really knew how to put a backup band together...

  • I love this woman's voice. :D

  • oot in the sticks pal! not a bad claim to fame though ryanol

  • She's a star, and if she was born near to where you live, well I envy you. Bless.

  • WOW! This ROCKS!

    Woo Hoo!

My head would have probably imploded if I had actually been there!

  • what year is this?

  • 1980

  • What a band!

  • I'm a pretty good cook,

and I'm sittin' on my groceries...

    Come up to my kitchen,

and I'll show you my best recipe...

    Love her lyrics!!!

  • Thanks for posting this....always loved this song. Hey, I live like 25 minutes away from where she was born....and that's about all that's happened around here....LOL!!!!
