HMS Hood had the unlucky fate of the main powder magazine catching aflame. This resulted in a catastrophic explosion which tore the ship apart. USS Arizona and the IJN Yamato had explosions that either caused the sinking or happened when the ship was sinking.
When the hood sank,One of the survivors was a mechanic i believe and he was deep inside the engine room when it exploded. He said he was lifted to the sirface in a giant air bubble and managed to escape the pull of the current created when a ship sinks.I believe he survived without any injury as well.A miracle to be sure.
@matijasajko1 Yes,full of German civilians (women and children, young and old and injured soldiers)trying to escape the attacking red army in ww2..sunk by a russian submarine who`s skipper knew it was going to be a war crime but still did it.Terrible act of cruelty.
can someone please explain this to me, why was the titanic considered such a tradgety when there were ships that had more deaths and less survivors, aside from the fact that the titanic was "un-sinkable" why is it so bad compared to the rest?
omg the Gustloff lost that much victims and i thought the titanic had the greatest life loss sinking in history.R.I.P to all of those who died in sinkings
the day my mom was born the titanic sank with her grandma on it it was very sad when i figured out i was crying for weeks cause they said my great grandma died from old age but then my parents saw me watching titanic and decided to tell me the truth
Yeah.. and the one painted on the stern deck is still there.... well it was in 1989 when the ship was discovered by Robert Ballard same guy who found the Titanic. There are documentaries on both searches, Bismark almost completely intact except for the big gun turrets that fell out as she sank.
that means it holds more than oasis of the seas.. which is the biggest ship in the world. and that only hold 5000 people... and its .. like how much bigger.. ALOT!!
pre sure thats not true about it hold over 10,000 people....
Well 9500 were lost on the Wilhelm Gustloff and there was well over 11000 on the ship. A ship may be only built for a certain amount of people, but when your country is about to be taken over by your worst enemy and that's the only way out you aren't to worried about comfort.

some of these comments remind me of a survival story, this guy was on a sinking ship, trapped in a dome (the sides where sealed with like plexi glass or something, they wouldnt budge, an officer een shot at it) and this soldier the giy was standing by had his wife and kid, and he watched as he pulled out a pistol, kissed his kids and wife goodbye, shot them, and shot himself.. and he was talking about how he could never forget about seeing the lifeless bodies in the water, i think he might hav
USS Arizona: Pennsylvania class battleship, sunk by a Japanese Torpedo Bomber at her mooring during the attack on Pearl Harbor, after a bomb penetrated her forward powder and ammunition magazines killing 1,177 of her nearly 1,400 crew members
a total of 3 ships were sunk Wilhelm Gustloff, General von Steuben, Goya. It is estimated that killed 16000-20000. This happened during the evacuation of German population from Polish territory. You can see the movie called''Gustloff, Die''(from 2008), if thou my memory serves me. my grandfather was a sailor, and talked about what was happening at sea 1940-1945. PS I'm Polish

USS Indianopolis--that was a tragedy, 3 days the survivors floated in the sea being attacked by sharks before the rest of the USN realized it was gone. Admiral King in fury (his usual emotional state, by the way!) at the loss (so close to the end of the war) convened a military court to railroad the Indianopolis captain. King & the USN drove the captain to suicide. King's been dead for years but the USN still won't admit what was done was WRONG!
@themarioandsonicbros No one really what happened to The Edmund Fitzgerald because there were no survivors. They think a rouge wave put her up on her end and she went straight down to the bottem like a rocket going the wrong direction. There is a museum on White Fish Point in Michigan that has a lot of information about it.
There were indeed only three survivors from Hood, the others were killed when her aft-magazine exploded, couldn't escape, or were pulled under and drowned as the ship sank
@snakes3425 ya i know srry i was just trying to shortin it up but dnt wrry i know it led to the 15 in magizine .im always tellin my friend about this ship blowing up in the MAGIZINE and what buggs me is when they think its a READING magizine
@johnguz76 There were only 3, but the last survivor, ted briggs, died in 2008 in hospital. Bismarck and the Prinz Eugen really battered HOOD up. But like Briggs said, only 3 of the men came to the surface
@johnguz76 Yes, only 3 survivors. The Hood had a design flaw; the armour plating in one spot on the deck was thin; if a shell hit just right it could travel straight down into an ammunition locker and blow up the ship. Unfortunately the Royal Navy & the Exchequer (British ministry of finance) figured the risk was too small to justify the cost of armouring that spot. The Bismarck proved them wrong.
I live in superior wisconsin, my dad owns apartment buildings, anyways, one time in the mid 90's my dad wanted to remodel one of his buildings so he hired a carpenter, he looked like he was in his late 50s, he told us he worked on the fitzgerald and the last night befor it went out on its final voyage, he got really drunk at a bar fell asleep and didnt make back for departure on time, he said since then he never stepped on a boat, is why he became a carpenter, drinking also saves lives, lucky guy
@Mopar4life440 There was also some sailors that missed the Car Ferry Milwaukee because they were in a bar the night it went down off the coast of Milwaukee.
dude i know how the edmund fitzerald sank this may sound crazy but if uve heard of rouge waves trust me it got hit by one or two i heard it on the history channel on a program called rouge waves
@haydnglv Bismark was attacked by Hood shortly after leaving her dock for her first mission bu Hood and Prince of Whales tried to intercept her, besides its best to honor any one giving their lives for their country.

@haydnglv Even though the sinking of the Bismarck helped the Allies win the war, we should still give respect to anybody who has given their lives for any country.
the loss of the Bismark and Yamoto were the most dissapointing of losses in the war. The Bismark had a record kill rate in war and is still titled the "deadliest battleship in world history" yet it was sunk by a wing of small biplanes and the small fleet task force 3 "taffy 3"
@FunPuff1998 yep, the only survivors were an electritian, a cook, and a gunnery officer. its sinking is in a show called dogfights. its on the history channel.
@longer393 Those 3 were very lucky indeed cause as far as what I hear Hood's magazines exploded after receiving a hit from Bismark. If it hadn't been for the hit to the ship's mags more could have lived.
@shanwei10 They did issue a warning that any and all ships would be in danger of getting sunk cause the sinking limitations for the U-boats had been lifted.
wow bro, amazing, i though nobody remembered Wilhelm nor how The Bismarck sinked the Hud ( well they do remember lol...) but the wilhelm im stunned... havent heard of it in years. Also check for SS Norway, SS Michellangelo, etc. Thnx bro
It was because she was obsolete, however her scrapping did have one benefit, the town in which she was broken up had been hit hard by the Depression and when she arrived for scrapping it created much needed jobs for the town.
@snakes3425 i know a lot of sea captains get emotional over scrapping. captain rostron who helped save people on the titanic commanded the mauritania on its last sea voyage and when asked if he wants to stand on the board and see her get scrapped he refused saying he'd rather remember her as the great lady.
i know even the titanic's remains won't last long. the ship has been going down rapidly deeper into the ground and cracks are becoming bigger it is only a matter of time before she breaks.
@sirtyeson1. Yes they did scrap her, sadly thought. I'd really wish that I could have seen her, in real life. They basicly scrapped her because they needed the money, and because there were a big crisis, just like the one we have now. No one had work. Also they scrapped her because of a collition with another ship, and because the White Star Line, merged with their biggest rival, Cunard Line. Those that today ownes the Queen Mary, Queen Mary 2, and Queen Elisabeth.
YEAH! It would be awesomest of all to get shot in a storm at sea, and hit an iceberg or something at the same time. It would be most of all interesting if I was making out with Kate Windlass she so hot.
what is kinda sad is, when they discovered the rms lusitania, they went along port side, she is laying on the aft side, and when they went along it it still had the medical service cross on it. darn germans sank a medical ship.
@snakes3425, the sinking of the Britannic and Gustav are clearly war crimes, the Lusitanie flew the British flag into a blockade U-Boat zone (many people beleive that Churchill and the British government tried to create some situation to draw the U.S. into the war, but the price the passengers of that poor ship was cruel).
HMS Hood had the unlucky fate of the main powder magazine catching aflame. This resulted in a catastrophic explosion which tore the ship apart. USS Arizona and the IJN Yamato had explosions that either caused the sinking or happened when the ship was sinking.

the loss of the Bismark and Yamoto were the most dissapointing of losses in the war. The Bismark had a record kill rate in war and is still titled the "deadliest battleship in world history" yet it was sunk by a wing of small biplanes and the small fleet task force 3 "taffy 3"

OMG 1:46 3 survivors?!?
FunPuff1998 1 year ago
@FunPuff1998 yep, the only survivors were an electritian, a cook, and a gunnery officer. its sinking is in a show called dogfights. its on the history channel.

OMGOMGOMG!!!! HMS HOOD only 3 survived of the 1418 crew!!!!!!!!OMGOMGOMG
longer393 1 year ago
@longer393 Those 3 were very lucky indeed cause as far as what I hear Hood's magazines exploded after receiving a hit from Bismark. If it hadn't been for the hit to the ship's mags more could have lived.

hey did they scrap the Olympic because they needed the money? ive always been wondering why they didnt preserve it like the Queen Mary in Long Beach
sirtyeson1 1 year ago
@sirtyeson1
It was because she was obsolete, however her scrapping did have one benefit, the town in which she was broken up had been hit hard by the Depression and when she arrived for scrapping it created much needed jobs for the town.
snakes3425 1 year ago
@snakes3425 i know a lot of sea captains get emotional over scrapping. captain rostron who helped save people on the titanic commanded the mauritania on its last sea voyage and when asked if he wants to stand on the board and see her get scrapped he refused saying he'd rather remember her as the great lady.
i know even the titanic's remains won't last long. the ship has been going down rapidly deeper into the ground and cracks are becoming bigger it is only a matter of time before she breaks.

What the iceberg began time will finish
snakes3425 1 year ago
@sirtyeson1. Yes they did scrap her, sadly thought. I'd really wish that I could have seen her, in real life. They basicly scrapped her because they needed the money, and because there were a big crisis, just like the one we have now. No one had work. Also they scrapped her because of a collition with another ship, and because the White Star Line, merged with their biggest rival, Cunard Line. Those that today ownes the Queen Mary, Queen Mary 2, and Queen Elisabeth.

id like to die at sea. getting shot at seems uninteresting. dying in a sunken ship sounds so much awesomer
mlkeysfullofshit 1 year ago 2
YEAH! It would be awesomest of all to get shot in a storm at sea, and hit an iceberg or something at the same time. It would be most of all interesting if I was making out with Kate Windlass she so hot.

@Stu44121 What is the title and the singer of this beautiful song????
uboot1967 1 year ago
what is kinda sad is, when they discovered the rms lusitania, they went along port side, she is laying on the aft side, and when they went along it it still had the medical service cross on it. darn germans sank a medical ship.
Stu44121 1 year ago
That was the Britannic, Lusitania was a passenger ship
snakes3425 1 year ago
@snakes3425 They both were passenger ships but Britannic had been converted into a hospital ship during WWI. They both were WWI casualties.
maricklee 1 year ago
@snakes3425, the sinking of the Britannic and Gustav are clearly war crimes, the Lusitanie flew the British flag into a blockade U-Boat zone (many people beleive that Churchill and the British government tried to create some situation to draw the U.S. into the war, but the price the passengers of that poor ship was cruel).
