Formula 1 is of course a dangerous sport, but: They slowed the cars down, quited racetracks which were to dangerous. Ralf Schumacher has had two bad accidents at Indy either, his back was hurt. He was driving at 310 + kph. Look how fast Indycars are going! They are smaller, lighter, faster AND saver! But it is unpredictable at this speeds how a crash ends. Flying cockpit first into the fence would have killed EVERY open wheel driver!

Notwithstanding the awful end to Dan Wheldon's short life, this is actually still proof that safety in motor racing has improved exponentially. Why? Because 20 years ago, one death could easily have been 5 or even 10 in this accident. The others would almost certainly have been left with terrible injuries that kept them from ever racing again. I'm heartbroken about poor Dan, but also thankful that several others survived.

I'm also curious as to why people seem to think he was killed in a fireball... sorry but the cars don't run on gas they run on methanol so there is no flame... the fire ball you see is the oil and hydraulic fluid burning, a brief flame that any standard drivers suit can easily withstand. He wasn't killed by the fire, it was the sudden impact with a concrete wall.... even if there had been no fire he would have been toast.
