Formula 1 is of course a dangerous sport, but: They slowed the cars down, quited racetracks which were to dangerous. Ralf Schumacher has had two bad accidents at Indy either, his back was hurt. He was driving at 310 + kph. Look how fast Indycars are going! They are smaller, lighter, faster AND saver! But it is unpredictable at this speeds how a crash ends. Flying cockpit first into the fence would have killed EVERY open wheel driver!
RIP Dan Wheldon! My best wishes to your family and friends!
indy car is pointless without these crashes, the only fun a viewer can get is when this stuff happens(crashes) other wise this type of racing is dull just going arround in circles without a race strategy, you cant even race under rain. indy should quit its operations and save the pilots life or race in real circuits. RIP Dan Wheldon a Great Driver.
The five lap salute was nice, but they should have run on the limiters on the final pass and the crowd should have collectively screamed along with the engines, the name of the deceased "Wheldon!"
my respect for wheldon as driver..but he try to pass some people..due to the accident ahead of him..and decide to go to the upside of track..then tracy..was right there..and hit his rear tyre ..was awful and so quick..spit..decision.cost his live..but the reason is too small oval track for so many cars..too many risks..until it happen again
10 deaths since 94, and a further 12 in nascar ! shame on you ! the gov bodies of these series should be held accountable for these losses ! gambling with ppls lives ! you are a disgrace to motor sport !
That doesn't matter! There are NO racing deaths since '94 in Formula 1, mostly thanks to the work they've put into safety! And Formula 1 isnt exactly a walk in the park either (Kubica Montreal 2007 for example)
@doncorneoli And uhh, since 2001 2 in indy car, none in NASCAR, get your facts straight before you open your mouth and spread your ignorance across the world
Weldon landed in this race thanks to Bernard's promise of (Canadian) $5 million to any moonlighting driver who could win the IndyCar season finale at Vegas. Although there were no takers, Bernard didn't scrap the idea, and Wheldon was declared eligible for the prize.
Notwithstanding the awful end to Dan Wheldon's short life, this is actually still proof that safety in motor racing has improved exponentially. Why? Because 20 years ago, one death could easily have been 5 or even 10 in this accident. The others would almost certainly have been left with terrible injuries that kept them from ever racing again. I'm heartbroken about poor Dan, but also thankful that several others survived.
Still can happen in F1 and has happened in F1, the fact is the driver's head is exposed and a high speed shunt can send a driver flying into something that can collide with his head.
I love NASCAR and I occasionally watch Indy racing but I really wish I didn't turn into the race to see this. My heart hurt seeing this. Scary though how we were onboard for the last seconds of his life. RIP Dan Wheldon.
they need to ban this redneck inbred sport so white folk can really find something intelligent to do with their lives besides cornholing their moms and sisters ohh and driving around in circles at high speeds
@logansGT i think that who ever the person was who made that channel, only created it to piss people off b/c it aint there anymore...some people only care about themselves and i think we've found one of them
@dogginheat I'm a NASCAR fan first, IndyCar 2nd. You are coming across as an insensitive man! I hope you learn from the mistake you made by posting in the first place.
Since Dan was a proud Briton who loved living in the US, I'm sure he wouldn't appreciate the anti-American brigade hijacking his death. It's a sad irony that most of us in the UK are only reading about this guy's amazing life because of its tragic end. Haunting to think that, in the brief on-board footage, we effectively see the last images that Wheldon ever knew.
I'm also curious as to why people seem to think he was killed in a fireball... sorry but the cars don't run on gas they run on methanol so there is no flame... the fire ball you see is the oil and hydraulic fluid burning, a brief flame that any standard drivers suit can easily withstand. He wasn't killed by the fire, it was the sudden impact with a concrete wall.... even if there had been no fire he would have been toast.
You know people need to realize that no driver was forced to race. No one put a gun to any drivers head and said you have to be an Indy Car driver, that was a choice the driver made... so please stop the stupid only in America BS... If anyone babbling like that had a clue they would realize that these races don't only exist in the US they happen in other countries as well...
And yes it is more dangerous than F1 because it has a concrete wall... if you make a mistake you pay a price.
Stupid sport. You run at full speed, make 1 mistake and you crash into concrete. If you're lucky, you'll get hit by a an on coming car at full speed. Oval racing should be banned.
Stop discussing the bloody catch fence, that's exactly what kills. You american health and safety freaks should have thought of moving the wall out by hundreds of yards. But then the spectator would be too far from the action. Well, choose your medicine carefully.
@anointedsword You are right of course, just another situation to discuss american sport. However, only in Americaland do we have exactly this situation. Stupid bowl, lots of walls and a rediculous catch fence. Where in the rest of the world does this exist? Before we discuss this as an american issue lets make clear that this is a american issue only and exclusively. Nobody else is this irresponsible towards race drivers.
You cant blame the catch fence - look at what happened at le Mans in 1955 without it - half a ton of flaming magnesium ploughing through the crowd. Blame the fact of having 34 cars doing 200+ on a tiny track - one mistake and there's only one way it can end. A sad sad day.
@stil2205 Google translate is broke as a joke. it says thats means this """fucking in the ass who need such race in F1 ... this just could not happen!""" .....................like what google?
@Bouchaneusmc It probably means: "Fuck that shit, what kind of race is that? 34 cars, narrow track, +200mph... In F1 that couldn't just happen (since it's safer)."
It's a dangerous sport, and you're always taking a huge risk getting seriously injured or killed when you get in those lightning fast cars. It's a shame, because he was only 33 years old with 2 very little children that are now without a father. Why couldn't it at least be someone without kids? Rest in peace.
@LxE100 Just because someone doesn't have kids does not make them any less important than another human being that does have kids. That was an ignorant statement.
@lizis712 I said, "Why couldn't it at least be someone without kids?" as in anyones death is a horrible thing, but I'd rather see a man with no kids die, than a man with kids. Every man is equal, but it wouldn't be as bad if someone without kids died. That is not an ignorant statement, and to say that it is, is the ignorant statement. Just think rationally, and you will see why you're wrong.
