I went through the river by walking right after the bridge, then stopping at the pond. Then I got to the edge of the pond nearest the land next to the structure, and repeatedly spun out and back in the pond to let the water drip off of me and clean the goop. Eventually I was able to long-jump and bounce once in the lava to his platform(The point at 2:06 in this video)

that's a clever way, but going in the river and spinning off is way faster and easier. it's also more efficient.
