If there is a way to do it wrong, look for the City of Danville, VA to do it. What a joke this once proud city is. A city that destroys it's history takes it future with it. Long the live the EZ Cash Payday Express industry!
Hey! We fought for it but it got sold to some company over in India. I'm mad about it. How they could blow up something up, especially history? But Danville (the government) thinks painting Old 97 on the building and refurbishing the Downtown will make it look, still historic.
Yeah, it's history but we can't do nothing about it. And by city, I hope you're not including the citizens.
No I'm not including the citizens. They are the victims in the whole sad thing. By "city" I mean the inept politicians and greedy old men that control everything. You know the ones, that always have the fingers in every pie.
@VA24541 I did not mean to imply that the municipal workers themselves took them down. I was instead referring to city as a whole. And as I recall the former city manager most certainly was interested in seeing those buildings come down.
i wish they would have done what they have been doing. take the mill apart piece by piece and if nothing else leave the smoke stacks. its a trademark of danville. its one of the first things you see when you come here. the skyline will never be the same, and i hate it
You're right, those stacks should have been left, but the longmill owners (bastards) hate everything that doesn't put money in their greedy hands. At least the white stack refused to fall where they wanted it, making them look stupid. The elevator and stairwells didn't fall at all, they must have used Bud's discount implosions and septic tank cleaners for the job.
lol yeah danville's finest right there. its laughable how nothing went right. but i swear danville losing those stacks is like when new york lost the twin towers. the sky is empty over danville. we still have the schoolfield mill stacks, but those will come down sometime soon. the mill itself is coming apart now and at a rapid pace. it just sickens me how nobody gives a damn about what danville used to be about. i hope they choke on that money.
We have the last capital of the Confederacy building, we have the old Confederate prison, we have the old Danville Speedway, we have the huge memorial at Dan Daniel Park, we have the Danville Braves, we still have one of the largest tobacco markets, and we have Goodyear.
Historical landmarks mean nothing when your city is devolving into a crime ridden welfare colony. What city DOESN'T have a war memorial? The Danville Braves are an A-ball team. And Goodyear more than likely will leave after the employees go on strike again which will probably be when their current contract is up!! This city is a joke.
South Boston, Martinsville, Galax, Wolf Trap, Chalk Level, should I keep going on? The Danville Braves are not Single-A, you're showing your ignorance. Goodyear will NOT leave. It is the biggest plant in the United States and the only plant that builds the type of tires it builds.. I work there. It runs Danville.
You're right, the DBraves aren't A-ball, they're rookie ball, even lower than A-ball.
As far as your comparisons to South Boston, Martinsville, Galax, Wolf Trap, Chalk Level go..... All you're proving that Danville might not be the BIGGEST shithole in Virginia. It's still a shithole.
You're listening to the 13 dollar an hour worker rumors..We're not going on strike. You're full of bullshit. That rumor has been going around on the floor for two years and after people have gotten on their 5 day a week, 8 hour shifts, there's no reason to. Get your head out of your ass and don't talk about a damn thing you don't know about.
No reason to go on strike? The union will find a reason to go on strike. And Goodyear will find a reason to make airplane tires in China. The Goodyear plant will look like the mill in another 10 years.
no we were about as close to the danger zone as they would allow, in fact i started out right next to that hydrant but the police made us move back to the other side of the street. it would have been a really great shot if i could have stayed there.
my school Sacred heart went to see that today it was awsome. im pretty sure the white chimmney had malfunctioned it didnt fall apart it fell towards the viewrs nearby

That's exactly right.

@wlbai The City of Danville did not take those stacks down. A contractor from out of town did the job.

@zachm2448 I agree with that!! I grew up in Danville within sight of those stacks--they are one of my memories of living there---sad to see them down
singwithme65 3 months ago
Maybe they'll throw a cigarette on it like they did the mill..
I remember that.
On the baseball field, playin for GW, and smoke and ash all over the place.
They done imploded that, it ain't no telling what they're going to do next.

You know your city is in trouble when it's two trademarks are a train wreck and a couple of smokestacks...... LOL.

Our two trademarks? We have more than that..
We have the last capital of the Confederacy building, we have the old Confederate prison, we have the old Danville Speedway, we have the huge memorial at Dan Daniel Park, we have the Danville Braves, we still have one of the largest tobacco markets, and we have Goodyear.
Ignorant.
