The growling is actually called a vocal fry, if you're having trouble making it then make the lowest sound you possibly can, your voice will "go out" and you'll be left with the "growling" or vocal fry. Once you know how to make it, just practice making that noise until you're comfortable. Sing to a song only with that little growling until you get the hang of it. I found following along to this video and his talking to help a lot. Fun fact, this is also how you scream sing.
