I like this band, however, I hope that I can like them while still believing that their political views re abortion, as expressed in this video, are pretty wrong-headed.
Anarcho-socialism requires no strong central system. It is based upon syndics -- voluntary associations that gather together to create and own the means of production. So there's nothing contradictory between left-wing and counter-culture, as long as you choose your left-wing philosophy correctly (one of the anarchist branches like anarcho-socialism is typical for punk rockers).
@ 3:06-3:07, if you look in the front row, I think I see a person take a picture that later becomes the cover for the CD version of the First Two Records. But I am not sure.
@knucklegrrrl562 The entire "punk rock" ethos is self-contradictory. Most fans just gloss over it and pretend not to notice it, but it is there. SLC Punk alluded to it.
you can't be counter-culture AND be left-wing, as socialism, communism, and fascism all require a strong central system.
Punk culture IS a system, riot grrl IS a gender role.
I like punk music, and I even like BK's music (even though I'm white, hetero, male, and American) but hypocrisy really is punk's elephant in the room.
Molly Neuman from Bratmobile reads the article, and Erika Reinstein who was eventuallypartly responsible for the unraveling of Riot Grrrl DC is the one screaming.
I wish I knew the whole story about Erika- I only get bits and pieces here and there. From what I understand she started stirring up problems and drawing lines between riot grrrl factions or something, & started clinging on to some racist, un-inclusive ideas about what riot grrrl should be about. Wish I knew the details!
i don't think it's about "not having them", more not having access to them. because that's when women go to back alley places that aren't safe, or try to give it to themselves.
or maybe also, because of the bombing of abortion clinics which kills the women inside. And they don't care if those women die.
or also, out of a lack of access to birth control and abortion, women having more children than they can feed or take care of. that's definately related to poverty, you're right.

This is one band I just could never get into. Props to those who "get it" with Bikini Kill; their appeal just simply beyond/beneath me.
I've listened to quite a lot of different kinds of music, but with BK, they really don't even stack up to the local bands I supported when I was in HS/college.
I'm sad I wasn't! Somehow it never seemed to reach the East Coast? Or at least my part of Pennsylvania (which is between Philly and NYC...we got ALL kinds a' music)??
this is the video of the actual recording on cd version of the first two records isn't it?... when they sit on the floor that looks like the album cover too.. ahhhh amazing.
ok, so whos the chick reading the letter?

I love BK... but I don't get how not having abortions kills anybody. Is it women/children facing death related to poverty?
I'm somewhat neutral on the abortion issue. I think they should be legal, but I'm not exactly a fan of the procedure.

The title refers to Thurston Moore who is one of the singers/guitarists in Sonic Youth, who are mentioned in the song.

that the music is a means to be a political end.. which would be fine, if the music was actually any good.

i swear, during this song is when the cover to "the cd version of the first two records" was shot. i would bet a lot of money on it.
