you can't be counter-culture AND be left-wing, as socialism, communism, and fascism all require a strong central system.

Punk culture IS a system, riot grrl IS a gender role.

I like punk music, and I even like BK's music (even though I'm white, hetero, male, and American) but hypocrisy really is punk's elephant in the room.

I wish I knew the whole story about Erika- I only get bits and pieces here and there. From what I understand she started stirring up problems and drawing lines between riot grrrl factions or something, & started clinging on to some racist, un-inclusive ideas about what riot grrrl should be about. Wish I knew the details!

I'm somewhat neutral on the abortion issue. I think they should be legal, but I'm not exactly a fan of the procedure.

i don't think it's about "not having them", more not having access to them. because that's when women go to back alley places that aren't safe, or try to give it to themselves.

or maybe also, because of the bombing of abortion clinics which kills the women inside. And they don't care if those women die.

or also, out of a lack of access to birth control and abortion, women having more children than they can feed or take care of. that's definately related to poverty, you're right.

This is one band I just could never get into. Props to those who "get it" with Bikini Kill; their appeal just simply beyond/beneath me.

I've listened to quite a lot of different kinds of music, but with BK, they really don't even stack up to the local bands I supported when I was in HS/college.
