a perfect example of connecting a moment of improvisational soloing over what some might think is a "written in stone" recorded piece. A couple of little accidental "blue" notes make this even more personal, because he is not simply pulling out an over-rehearsed series of patterns, rather allowing the music to go where the moment at hand guides him. All musicians should be so brave...especially vocalists who lip-synch instead of sharing an emotional performance despite a few little flaws. Great!
He's one of those rare guitarists who had a unique "sound ID." When one single note is all you hear on the radio, and you say, "Floyd..." THAT is what makes a legend. Kind of like Jimi, Angus and Duane (among a just very few others).
Reply back with your ideas of those with THAT SOUND. I'm interested to see what y'all say! :)
David above all imo stands tall above the rest. I really do not care for Jimi Hendrex, nice to watch him play but listening to him is kinda all the same. Not enoughlistening to the Allman Brothers band to make a comment.
Yeah, I eventualy became the same with Jimi. I can listen to Floyd all day. Had the phones on late last night, listening to Floyd's "Animals" CD. What an epic piece of work/music/art....
Me too (listeneing w/phones) to Animal's but I was listening to 1-24-77 concert. I halve about half of all the live recordings availible. To me they are great in studio but live they are amazing. Click on myt name and look at my videos and see my collection of Floyd bootlegs.
Hi. TK, I agree totally on Gilmour and Jimi(even though Stevie Ray is not to far off, need up to half a minute). I think yhe same goes for Camels´ Andy Latimer, listen to "ICE" preferably live version.
Angus Young of AC/DC. I can hear just one note, and I know it's him. The other is Duane Allman of the Allman Bros. Any of his slide work just leaps out at me. You're right about Andy, for sure. Of course, Neil Young has a "unique" sound. When I first started to listen to him as a kid, I thought he sucked! However, I have a hard time replicating his style on my guitars. It grew on me quickly. He's one of those cats who you either hate with a passion or love.
Thanks TK. Just listened to AC/DC, did of course recogniced some good songs. I never bought a record, do not like the singer. I prefer deeper voice, Ian Gillan for example. I LOVED the guitar.

i LOVE david gilmour but he is not one of the greatest musicans today. ever heard of jazz fusion. chick korea, al demiola, pretty much anyone in that genre is technically way better than gilmours very "safe" song compositions
Hey guys, we are all really inspired by this and would love your opinions on our band eightball (just click on gingerarse100) any feedback would be greatly appreciated man cheers
GUUUYS PLEASE FOR THE MILLIONTHT TIME SPEED DOESNT = SKILL. it takes a fuck load of skill to write a solo like this, rather then just fucking playing scales over and over really fast.
Saludos Floydianos ;) .
Breattaking solo. It is the best solo ever made no matter what anyone says. Its emotionally charged and inspirational. Not mindless garbage shredding. Only good shredding i've ever heard is eruption
I know that glimour isnt the best guitarist ever!...but he is my favorite. Even though i know, for example that SRV or Duane Allman might rate higher than glimour in some lists i would listen to glimour over SRV on most night. Thats just my taste. Everyone is different.
jrl802, you might be right that he isn't the best guitarist, but he might just be the best at performing a guitar solo. no one can top him. now putting him over SRV i dont think so :)
you can put anyone over duane allman, cause he sucks.
Playing fast its just a game made of mechanical memory aplied to scales... Even a monkey can do that. But playing like gilmour... only 2 notes from his guitar means more than 2 hours from steve vai-allmightyguitargod ...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Believe me, there are plenty of guitarists who play 100000000000 times way better than david gilmour. He's not playing anything special.
nothing against his music but I don't think that he's such a good guitarist. He's just overrated. I'll probably get many "thumbs down" by Gilmour fans - but who cares :D
hmm.. well maybe so. but you'll agree on one thing? there are many, many different sound "types" that can be produced by guitars, and he's created a very nice sounding one. quite reverby, clear, high-pitched and epic. he does it good. he's not a speeder. maybe you just like something else?
you just one of those retards who think its about speed. go practise banging your head on the wall as quick as you can if you like speed. or crash your car at 200mph and kill yourself. I'll send a card.
Its sound that matters.
THAT sounds good. much better than when someone is just trying to snap his fingers.
Who gives a shit how fast, it's not been voted the best solo ever written for it's speed, just listen/watch to the emotion that goes into it, this solo has MEANING, it's not a mindless generic shred like our modern shredheads worship. Broaden your tastes
really now? pink floyd has been know for fast and slow ,but no matter what it always has emotion and even if its with rodger waters david gilmour or syd barrett(god let his soul rest) they have always been good and who cares about speed just because you played guitar hero and thought dragon force is good because they have the hardest song in the game well i hate to break it to you but its just 2 diffrent guitarists and a paino doing what it is
This should be the song at my funeral because it means so much to me, i listen to it since i'm eleven ; i'm sixteen now and i know the song from my father! since the moment i listened to that song i started apreciating music. David Gilmour is one of the legends that never may be forgotten !
There are certain guitar players who simply own their own spectrum of sound. It's not about how great one is with his fingering or how difficult he plays. It's about the beauty of the sound. Gilmour is one of those who owns part of the sound spectrum (others include Jimmy Page, The Edge, Elliot Randall, Kirk Hammett, Jeff Beck, etc. - there are many). But, Gilmour is clearly among the great legends.
I couldnt simply couldnt agree more. you hit it spot on! Like you just read my mind :D
what comes to a unique spectrum of sound, I will have to say that Gilmour and Edge are my favourites, perhaps along with Eddie Van Halen. If you don't posess U2 Rattle and Hum dvd, its time you get one :D
Yes - I love rattle and hum and have seen it several times. The Edge is my all-time favorite and Gilmour is right there. Van Halen is also in that list of greats for me b/c of the unique sound he creates.
haha seems we talk along the same lines! Page is not far away either, there are a quite a few that make the top with a unique sound, but I have to say that The Edge is my all-time favourite as well. Always been a U2 fan.
And I have to say that its a bit about the story and the person as well.. I mean who wouldnt like The Edge? modest, learned to play all alone and came up with a very own sound that is not about skill, but sound. Not about long solo's, but about making it sound good. admiration
totally stupid i agree.especially when last year fender players mags and polls, voted gilmoure as fenders greatest player. not to sure if it was in total guitar mag. or if fender themselves did a massive survey. any way if gilmoure just wanted to be an axe man im sure he would easily slot in. but no he plays guitar in context to the song and theme.he is not a look at me and axe man. number 82 stupid.how many of the 81 above him can make time,us and them comfo numb diamond sorrow wish,so good
bassmonkey3000 dont take life so serious.if i offended you or man u well i didnt want to . come on we both love floyd, so your a red but your saving grace is you like floyd. so you cant be all bad cock.
THE BEST, A GOD AND A LEGEND¡¡¡GREAT GREAT¡¡ HOW CAN PEOPLE NOT TO CRY WITH THIS SOLO??... thats davids efect i guess..Iknow that pulse version is imcoparable, but this is diferent and fucking great one... thanks david gilmour
you are so bang on the button here.pulse is very perfect,a masterpiece. my head always will say pulse for the craftmenship, a true specatle. but my heart loves this looser stringed grungy blusey and looser version, like he did at the royal hall.and i think david likes it that way. by the way check out comfortably numb demo totally different lyrics.
ok thanks for the advise man i'll check it out.. yes yes pulse its just like the monalisa a masterpiece.... if you want look at this davids show "LIVE AT THE HAMMERMITH ODEON",great guitars in there, and a fucking excelent comfortably numb version at the end of the show..
what irritates me is how rolling stone magazine underestimates him soooo much... they rated him #82 guitarist.... that's wrong on so many level...
and, they said this was the 4th greatest guitar solo, losing out to stairway to heaven and i think freebird... i'm suprised that that retarded magazine can still stay afloat
i often, ask myself a question. being an avid manchester city fan,and totally hating man u.what would mean more? me scoring a winning cup final goal against the scum, or playing c numb like david i think playing c numb would edge it.
i agree but delicate was nearly 20 years ago,my fave from that concert and maybe in my top ten floyd songs was on the turning away, solo at the end......amazing
I love David Gilmour, but this is not his best performance of C Numb. But, shit he is like 62 or something. Check out Delicate Sound of Thunder - best guitar work ever!!
all i can say is that rick wright sang on one of the greatest live versions of comfortably numb.gilmour must have played it live thousands of times and still he produces.anybody who finds fault should listen to chico.enough said.rip rick wright.
The variations he plays with each live performance of this solo only add to the magic of it. The quintessential rock guitar solo, only gets better with time.
He accidently broke the pedal for it....ahah...yeah....he had a whale inside the pedal that made that sound....
All he uses to do that sound is his inspiration and the whamy bar....he doesn't do it often, because the solo would become vulgar, ordinary....so, that part will remain a legend among the guitar solos....
Who are you to call what he plays "mistakes"? I've been watching Gilmour play since the 70's and he will play the song the way he wants. The structure of the solo is always the same, but if he choses to throw in minor notes, or Bb7 flats, or whatever, IT'S HIS SOLO! Begone with you!
I agree we have to remember this solo is culmination of 7 separate solos that Gilmore improvised when writing this song. This man can not mess up....screw Jimmy David is the greatest guitarist in history.
i agree with dave, it's his! These kinds of bands never play it note for note again anyway, they're clways changing it, playing how they feel. It's impossible for a "mistake" to be made. He can do whatever he wants.
stfu you dick, he didnt make any mistakes seeming as it's his solo....he can play it however the fuck he wants, and he is a better guitar player then you ever will be so stop trying to bag dave!
Everybody makes mistakes. David Guilmour is an excelent guitar player, but he does makes some mistakes in this solo...He's not God...he's a Guitar God, and all guitar Gods became Gods by making mistakes...
Sure it's his solo, and he can do whatever he wants, but when a note is outside a chord harmony...that's a mistake.
Oppynque Phlloid is one of (if not the single) most creative groups in the history of rock....

I know that glimour isnt the best guitarist ever!...but he is my favorite. Even though i know, for example that SRV or Duane Allman might rate higher than glimour in some lists i would listen to glimour over SRV on most night. Thats just my taste. Everyone is different.
jrl802 3 years ago 6
Not everyone's. Gilmour beats SRV every night in my book.
Oink84 3 years ago 6
That is because feeling is more important than technique. Inspiration more important than ability!
sirswedishmike 3 years ago 3
jrl802, you might be right that he isn't the best guitarist, but he might just be the best at performing a guitar solo. no one can top him. now putting him over SRV i dont think so :)
you can put anyone over duane allman, cause he sucks.

Playing fast its just a game made of mechanical memory aplied to scales... Even a monkey can do that. But playing like gilmour... only 2 notes from his guitar means more than 2 hours from steve vai-allmightyguitargod ...

Believe me, there are plenty of guitarists who play 100000000000 times way better than david gilmour. He's not playing anything special.
nothing against his music but I don't think that he's such a good guitarist. He's just overrated. I'll probably get many "thumbs down" by Gilmour fans - but who cares :D
vendimthaqi 3 years ago
Maybe this solo was just a lucky shot. But this is the best solo ever.
ARVNpistola313 3 years ago 7
yea you will cause your an idiot. name me someone better?
zacofzacs1 3 years ago
For technique or for what he is playing.. no gilmour isn't the best. But as far as a musician and his tone.. he is golden. Few come close.
Ramblingman247 3 years ago 4
hmm.. well maybe so. but you'll agree on one thing? there are many, many different sound "types" that can be produced by guitars, and he's created a very nice sounding one. quite reverby, clear, high-pitched and epic. he does it good. he's not a speeder. maybe you just like something else?

damn he sucks, hes not fast at all
ibanez3212 3 years ago
lol, ever thought that's not the point?
you just one of those retards who think its about speed. go practise banging your head on the wall as quick as you can if you like speed. or crash your car at 200mph and kill yourself. I'll send a card.
Its sound that matters.
THAT sounds good. much better than when someone is just trying to snap his fingers.
Settimatti 3 years ago 6

"snap his fingers"????!@#$%%%)(@#:) wth r u talking about, hes too slow, i thought he was dead anyway, these old guitersts cant play fast at all
ibanez3212 3 years ago
Who gives a shit how fast, it's not been voted the best solo ever written for it's speed, just listen/watch to the emotion that goes into it, this solo has MEANING, it's not a mindless generic shred like our modern shredheads worship. Broaden your tastes
3qrw 3 years ago 7
really now? pink floyd has been know for fast and slow ,but no matter what it always has emotion and even if its with rodger waters david gilmour or syd barrett(god let his soul rest) they have always been good and who cares about speed just because you played guitar hero and thought dragon force is good because they have the hardest song in the game well i hate to break it to you but its just 2 diffrent guitarists and a paino doing what it is
wiignclol 3 years ago 4
Playing fast doesn't really matter, it's the sound that comes out of the amplifier that matters, and this sounds immense in my ears.
TearsWillNeverFall 3 years ago 5
wow your a fucking idiot. seriously, is that all that matters to you? go play some more guitar hero you fucking faggot.
zacofzacs1 3 years ago 4
This should be the song at my funeral because it means so much to me, i listen to it since i'm eleven ; i'm sixteen now and i know the song from my father! since the moment i listened to that song i started apreciating music. David Gilmour is one of the legends that never may be forgotten !
(sorry for my bad english ;D )
jesusxisxgay 3 years ago 2
One of the crappier CN solos. If they play this at your funeral, you'll probably wake up.
ragsiruh 3 years ago
i no that metal shredding solos are great and all but u just cant beat a good old melodic solo like this. its what it means to be a guitarist

But, Gilmour is clearly among the great legends.
youngman44 3 years ago 3
I couldnt simply couldnt agree more. you hit it spot on! Like you just read my mind :D
what comes to a unique spectrum of sound, I will have to say that Gilmour and Edge are my favourites, perhaps along with Eddie Van Halen. If you don't posess U2 Rattle and Hum dvd, its time you get one :D
Settimatti 3 years ago
Yes - I love rattle and hum and have seen it several times. The Edge is my all-time favorite and Gilmour is right there. Van Halen is also in that list of greats for me b/c of the unique sound he creates.
youngman44 3 years ago
haha seems we talk along the same lines!
Not about long solo's, but about making it sound good. admiration
Settimatti 3 years ago 2
the edge and page suk
ibanez3212 3 years ago
totally stupid i agree.especially when last year fender players mags and polls, voted gilmoure as fenders greatest player. not to sure if it was in total guitar mag. or if fender themselves did a massive survey. any way if gilmoure just wanted to be an axe man im sure he would easily slot in. but no he plays guitar in context to the song and theme.he is not a look at me and axe man. number 82 stupid.how many of the 81 above him can make time,us and them comfo numb diamond sorrow wish,so good

bassmonkey3000 dont take life so serious.if i offended you or man u well i didnt want to . come on we both love floyd, so your a red but your saving grace is you like floyd. so you cant be all bad cock.

THE BEST, A GOD AND A LEGEND¡¡¡GREAT GREAT¡¡ HOW CAN PEOPLE NOT TO CRY WITH THIS SOLO??... thats davids efect i guess..Iknow that pulse version is imcoparable, but this is diferent and fucking great one... thanks david gilmour
davidgilmour22 3 years ago 5
you are so bang on the button here.pulse is very perfect,a masterpiece. my head always will say pulse for the craftmenship, a true specatle. but my heart loves this looser stringed grungy blusey and looser version, like he did at the royal hall.and i think david likes it that way. by the way check out comfortably numb demo totally different lyrics.
dazvinci 3 years ago
ok thanks for the advise man i'll check it out.. yes yes pulse its just like the monalisa a masterpiece.... if you want look at this davids show "LIVE AT THE HAMMERMITH ODEON",great guitars in there, and a fucking excelent comfortably numb version at the end of the show..
davidgilmour22 3 years ago
what irritates me is how rolling stone magazine underestimates him soooo much... they rated him #82 guitarist.... that's wrong on so many level...
and, they said this was the 4th greatest guitar solo, losing out to stairway to heaven and i think freebird... i'm suprised that that retarded magazine can still stay afloat

On the turning away from DSOT AWESOME. Now that was Gilmour at his absolute best.

I love David Gilmour, but this is not his best performance of C Numb. But, shit he is like 62 or something. Check out Delicate Sound of Thunder - best guitar work ever!!

all i can say is that rick wright sang on one of the greatest live versions of comfortably numb.gilmour must have played it live thousands of times and still he produces.anybody who finds fault should listen to chico.enough said.rip rick wright.

rick sang very well in general. listen to the performance of time from the same show, best singing ever.

The variations he plays with each live performance of this solo only add to the magic of it. The quintessential rock guitar solo, only gets better with time.

There si no pedal for the waving part... he just turns up the volumen for his delay pedal and uses the whammy bar...
dpayares4 3 years ago
He accidently broke the pedal for it....ahah...yeah....he had a whale inside the pedal that made that sound....
All he uses to do that sound is his inspiration and the whamy bar....he doesn't do it often, because the solo would become vulgar, ordinary....so, that part will remain a legend among the guitar solos....
PiaFino 3 years ago
Why does Gilmour restrain himself from doing the wailing riff like he did on the 1994 tour?
napnap1234 3 years ago
He accidently broke the pedal for it.
Area5107 3 years ago
Really? What's the whole story? Why doesn't he just get a new one? And what exactly was the pedal?

There is a several mistake in the minute 1:30 but he still is god,
jujuy78 3 years ago
Who are you to call what he plays "mistakes"? I've been watching Gilmour play since the 70's and he will play the song the way he wants. The structure of the solo is always the same, but if he choses to throw in minor notes, or Bb7 flats, or whatever, IT'S HIS SOLO! Begone with you!
Davedio 3 years ago 13
I agree we have to remember this solo is culmination of 7 separate solos that Gilmore improvised when writing this song. This man can not mess up....screw Jimmy David is the greatest guitarist in history.
joizzy87 3 years ago
i agree with dave, it's his! These kinds of bands never play it note for note again anyway, they're clways changing it, playing how they feel. It's impossible for a "mistake" to be made. He can do whatever he wants.

wolsleyhouse 3 years ago
stfu you dick, he didnt make any mistakes seeming as it's his solo....he can play it however the fuck he wants, and he is a better guitar player then you ever will be so stop trying to bag dave!
samsaccountyea 3 years ago 3
Everybody makes mistakes. David Guilmour is an excelent guitar player, but he does makes some mistakes in this solo...He's not God...he's a Guitar God, and all guitar Gods became Gods by making mistakes...
Sure it's his solo, and he can do whatever he wants, but when a note is outside a chord harmony...that's a mistake.
PiaFino 3 years ago 2
totally agree, dude :)
