Looking at one of these for my first firearm. Revolvers are too awesome. Reliable, solid and (hopefully?) accurate. It's usually possible to get one of these for $500-$600, isn't it?
Try a 6 and half bbl. Ruger Blackhawk and stuff it full of Buffalo Bore 180gr. LFN Gas-Checked...should puch through any deer's shoulder and out the other side, as long as the range is kept within reason...which means close w/ a .357. Wanna shoot hollowpoints? Stick to the smallest deer. Nuff said
Gonna show this video to the guy at snubnose.info who said;
"Another issue with the .357 is its penetration (no they won’t really go through the block of a ’49 Buick unless you are firing steel core ammunition)"
Using a .357 magnum revolver for deer hunting should not be used/ I believe pistol and revolvers should not be used I believe a centrefire rifle should be used .223 calibre minimum.
@apa1967 .357 mag has much more kinetic energy and produces a bigger hole than a .223 at muzzle and 100 yds. .357 is fine as long as the proper round is used, a short range is enforced, and accuracy is supreme. Bow hunters kill deer every year will arrows going 200 fps, they just have to be accurate and limit shot distance. same with any handgun.
@apa1967 Why shouldn't it be used? If someone wants to and they physically can achieve that level of accuracy then they should have the same right to hunt in their local season.
jesus christ. 380 is a shortened 9mm.. also called the 9mm kurtz. 38 special and 357 use the same bullet but differernt case lengths, where 380 and 9mm use the same bullet but different case lengths. You cant shoot 380 out of a 9mm, but you can shoot 38 special out of the 357. Dont question me I am right. I am not some idiot gamer, i reload all my own ammo and i know case lengths bullet lengths etc.
@littledude2292 - i know of shooting 38 spec outta a .357 but I've never actually seen someone fire a .380 outta a 9mm semi auto. It actually would be impractical if you could since 9mm ammo is cheaper than .380 but even if .380 was a good amount cheaper I still don't think I would shoot it outta a 9mm. it is 2mm shorter than a 9mm.. I would be more comfortable trying a 9x18 makarov round but I still probably woundn't. .38 spec though i would because it's common but never seen a 380 outta 9mm
what are you smoking. if you actually want to kill someone efficiently then u should only use hollow points. fmjs are cheaper and still work well buin lighter calibres such as 32, 38, 380 and 9mm u should never use fmj's
Not exactly, 38. spl, .357 mag, .380 auto, and 9mm are all the same caliber, but the casing is different, .380 is a short 9mm, and the .38 and .357 are revolver ammunition.
Use a knife or an axe, it will cross through also. Now use a door from an old american made car, there you have steel, then tell me the results after.
So, u guys think the .357 Mag is enough gun for deer? I was recently given my 1st .357 (happens 2 b a Ruger GP100 w/ 6" barrel...) and kinda want 2 hunt w/ it. What loads (if any) are good 4 deer?
Well, you need to check with your state game and fish office. Here in New Mexico, I believe it's stated as the round needs to have 1000 Ft lbs (foot pounds) of force at 100 yards.
in my state it's legal to use a .357 it's the lowest caliber you can use on deer with a handgun.. you can also use 7.62 (which means I could use my yugo ak-47 haha)
@rNdDynamikkDuo It depends on state regs, but as far as ballistics go it does have enough energy to kill a deer, altho your range will be limited to 50 to 75 yds. I would suggest buffalo bore ammo, they have a hard nosed hunting round for the .357 mag that is 200 gr and goes over 1400 fps, getting almost 900 ft lbs of energy. plenty enough if you're a good shot. thats the main key tho. be accurate.
@88joemomma Down in New Mexico, it's just caliber (size) that's used...which is crazy. If I recall correctly, you need 1,000 ft-lbs at 100 yds up in Colorado...
@StoppingPowerInfo lol you guys are lucky, your talking like its bad when your range is limited to 50yards, your LUCKY if you get that here in Ohio, all we can hunt with is deer slugs, .357 or larger pistol, or a bow. Nobody gets a killl over maybe 70 yards, and most are within 20 yards if that.
@88joemomma. The .357 Mag (or .38 Special, for that matter) is legal for deer hunting here in PA. Thanks for the info, sounds like a good round to check out.
@vincereviews Thanks, but since that comment was posted (three years ago?!?!) I've done a Lot of shoooting and reloading of the .357 Mag. Hollowpoints are ok if range is short, but all handguns lack severely in penetration, so a big (170-200g) solid placed high in the shoulder is a much better idea for deer. Hollowpoints are fine for self-defense or very short range, but beyond 25 yards, heavy solids win every time, imho.

clean thru the door, the .357 is still nothing to snub your nose at, 80 years after it's design.

your talking in auto loaders?
a 9mm revolver can shoot 380 and a 9x23 revolver can shoot all three

@napalm868 you're wrong, napalm. you're just another stupid gamer with no idea what you're talking about.
.32 fmj doesn't work? would you like to test that stupid theory? i will be happy to pull the trigger on you. you will die. trust me.
(and .38/.380 are the same things...)

@alecshinyuanwu 38 special and 380 auto are 2 different cartridges u dick
in fact why do u even care redneck
napalm868 2 years ago
@napalm868 obviously, that's why they're called .38 SPECIAL and .380 ACP
-_-
you really are some stupid gamer kid, aren't you?
alecshinyuanwu 2 years ago
can you fire a 380 round from a 38 no ...and you cant fire a 38 round from a 380 so they are not the same ...380 is more like 9 mm
athiestracist 2 years ago
@athiestracist i realize that
i'm saying you have to say "auto" after it
or give some reference to make it different
or else people would have no way of telling what's what

RidX4Ricers 2 years ago
@RidX4Ricers i know, that's a given.
mr. napalm just doesn't understand that .38 and .380 ACPs are the same thing.
.38 specials are, of course, called .38 specials specifically to differentiate them from ACP.
alecshinyuanwu 2 years ago
good explanation
athiestracist 2 years ago
38 and a 380 are not the same ...38 shell is longer and can be fired from a 357 ..a 380 is shorter fatter and usually a rimless automatic round

@athiestracist its the same projectile width

Pick up some Winchester USA 110gr. hollow points in 357. Good for deer up to 50 yards, but I wouldn't try anything past 50...
