There have been many great tenors singing this aria but Mario Lanza's voice pierces the heart like a knife with it's pain and intensity. It's like he is carrying the sorrow of the world on his shoulders. What a great great pity he died so young and seemed to have such trouble with excesses in his life. Perhaps that's why his voice is so moving. An unbelievable voice possessing some of the greatest qualities of all the great tenors.
This is hands down Lanza's best take on Vesti la Giubba. The combination of power, beauty, resonance - just breathtaking. Caruso's version has long been revered as the greatest, but this performance alone shows how Lanza belongs with the absolute greatest tenors of all time. Amazing, heart rending. Bravo, Mario.
This recording by Mario Lanza is great! Props to Franco Corelli, the video on YouTube of him singing "Vesti la giubba" was fine, but not the best I've heard or seen. The Pavarotti version opposite Teresa Stratas had the best acting, IMHO. One could see past the great singing and recognize Canio for the self-pitying, despicable lout he is: "Othello" in motley, egged on by a sinister "Iago" figure to murder his wife, who is desperate to escape his violence and be with a man who treats her gently.
This is easily my fav rendition by Lanza. Deep, resonant voice. Not too slow or too fast as he usually did as he got older. Mario was definitely one of a kind and if I had a chance to see him or the Three Tenors, I would chose Mario any day of the week and twice on Sunday. He was the best.
I agree with you on that point, this is Marios best "Vesti la giubba"!! However, please forgive me the Worlds best tenor was and is Dario Franco Corelli.
Gänsehaut pur!!! Danke Mario, danke Jürgen

Lanza, Pavarotti & Bjorling are my favorites. Mario Lanza owns this one though. His passion, color, holding of the notes. Absolutely seamless.

Mario Lanza was a great tenor in his own right. He had a lot of personal problems in his life.
I have seen a nice movie about his life story. Was he a great tenor ? He ranks up there, but not like Caruso and Pavarotti.

Dieser Film lief am 1.3.1969 im ZDF. Lanza ist meine zweite Opernliebe. Er war sooooo gut und starb leider viel zu früh. Vielen Dank.
