My grandpa was an Army Captain and a POW at Stalag 17. He told my dad, when he was older, that one of the greatest moments of his life was when he saw the Russians arrive and liberated the camp.
Really nice pair those two, Harry and Animal. I was grinning by butt of when Animal was so disillusioned that he mistakened Harry, who was in a woman's hat and hay hair, to be a real woman. hahah xD xD btw im only 16 and I think black n whites are better the films these days.
Jeeees Black and white seem better than today's coloured. Imagine these good old films. I cant believe "Casino Royale" is rubbish compared to "You Only Live Twice". Crappy people they eeffed up James Bond. :((
Back in my HS's JROTC program, our Instructors made us watch this movie as part of the program simply because, and I quote our Master Sergeant: "It's a really great movie." :)
I have recently watched the entire movie here on youtube I wanted to see the inspiration for hogan's heroes. I must say it is an excellent movie, I like how they dealt with security officer Price portrayed by Peter Graves. Movies ,ike these are called classic not because they are dated in age, but because they will always be entertaining. This movie deserves 4 and 1/2 stars.
Could someone tell me why the russian women are stuck in this POW camp. b/c I have to write a report 3 historical films (this being one of them) and all the wwii books I read talks about hitler and why the war started and nothing about them.
@musika319 Maybe its to torture the male POWs. They haven't seen women in nearly two years and now lots of beautiful Russian Women arrive a mile away from them. They are so excited to see the girls and want to meet them but they can't even get within half a mile without being shot or killed to even talk to the Russian women...except for Sefton.
lol i remember "AT EASE!!" lol that guys voice was hilarious. and then the rat races. ya i watched this movie for my senior year World War 2 movie research reprot on POW camps. not only did i learn that thes arent half bad )lol) i also learned that
@jakescript Then God bless you. I used to hate the phrase "they don't make _____ like they used to." Now I'm all of 27 years old and find myself saying it about music and movies all the time. If I never saw another "new" movie for the rest of my life, I'd be fine with it. If I could never watch Casablanca or Treasure of the Sierra Madre or, of course, Stalag 17 again, that would be a tragedy.
@kjparlay wow, for 27 years old you have exceptional taste in movies. I have some movie suggestions you might really like if you like quality old movies...ok...The Apartment (with Jack lemmon)....Sunset Boulavard (Bill Holden), ....Picnic (Bill Holden), ....The wild one(s) Marlon Brando...Rebel without a Cause (James Dean), The Window (Barbara Hale.....this is a real good one), Rear Window (James Stewart)....AND YOU HAVE TO SEE..."Laura" (Clifton Webb)....get back to me...evr see any of these
The suttlles are what make this such a great movie. A very good example is at the end of this clip. Notice Septin's reaction when they hear the gunfire, but nobody else sees it. Genius
@mphrdldn Sorry to disappoint you, but although Robert Strauss (Animal) was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, he lost to Frank Sinatra, for his role as "Maggio" in "From Here to Eternity". A hard choice for the Academy, as both performances were terrific.
When the tv show came out there was great reluctance to "comedy up" a POW camp. ALL the actors on the show were adamant that any portrayal of a German/Nazi would lead the walk out of the cast. Especially Werner Kempler, Robert Clary (was in Concentration camp) and John Banner (shultz family also in a prison camp). Of course it was a huge success due to the "buffon" aspect to all the Germans.. Love this movie !
No conocia la pelicula, la chape de casualidad en cable, una madrugada que no podia dormir..........me parecio fantastico el humor, Animal y Harry Shapiro se roban el show, pero todos los personajes me parecen memorables.........saludos desde Peru
Have to laugh; Neville Brand who plays the character "Duke" , is always argumentative/Pissed off, through out the entire movie...(until the very end).
A Season #2 "Mission: Impossible" episode, "Trail by Fury," featured Jim Phelps (the late Peter Graves) and Barney Collier (the late Greg Morris) undercover in a South American prison trying to expose an informant.
In an additional bit of trivia irony, the prison scenes were filmed on the "Hogan's Heroes's" set.
Peter Graves was the brother of James Arness, the star of the TV series, "Gunsmoke" The family name was Arnass. (not sure of spelling) His more famous role was the part of Mr Phelps on the original Mission Impossible series. he took over has head of the IM force in the show's second season.

I always liked this movie, including the not-so-subtle condemnation of capitalism.
But, it also condemned the socialists who hated Septon for his American entrepreneurial spirit.
