the point is to show the diesel improvement....they want to show ppl that when u drive behind a new diesel, u don't get all that nasty black smoke in ur face
@GuntherTheGerman Imitation is the highest form of flattery so why should you care. If this got your attention because of the Top Gear imitation then I guess it worked. Does this bother you ? I fail to see your point or is there actually one that relates to the subject of the video?
mmm people! Did you realise that these kind of "infommercials" are just for EDUCATED americans consumers??? This comercial are not to prove that Vw is better than Mercedes u others it is just to prove the americans that the "new diesel technologies" are clean enough to used instead of gasoline. Coz in USA they use around 90% of owners cars are gasoline. MMM in the other side diesel its just cleaner and good enough only when the weight to move is big, otherwise, its cleaner to use ethanol
@kyoshiroma As an educated American I will say the story on ethanol is simply not simple !! LMAO !! Sorry i couldn't resist the opportunity for a joke, but any discussion about Ethanol must start with a joke as the US implementation is poorly done, and a joke. I suggest you look into the embedded or hidden pollutions in Corn based ethanol, and you might change your opinion about Ethanol. I am a big supporter of BioFuels, but there are better ones than corn based ethanol which replaced MTBE.
@egcroan ok man, but who said "corn"? I was thinking only in "sugar cane" based one. Ethanol, as you said, is not a simple story, but definetly is cleaner over the simple gasoline or normal diesel.
@kyoshiroma Good point about Sugar Cane based ethanol as Brazil has been very successful with their program, especially since Sugar Cane grows really well in their climate, and requires far less resources than Corn based Ethanol does. I still say Diesel is better especially if the Diesel is Soybean based. it comes down to embedded costs being lower such as less water being used. In the interim until diesel cane be produced fro0m cleaner sources Shell is making it from methane. USA has plenty.
Why compare a old car that no ones knows anything about. Maybe it has been 100,000 miles since it last had anything done to it, along with it could of been sitting somewhere for the last 5+ years.
Also, they make it a point to show the Mercedes was running...but never a close up of the vw...how convenient
you have a good way of looking into the evidence. but i guess most diesels at the time were kinda dirty. What I think they do is introduce some of the em missions back into the combustion engine to burn it off even more thoroughly. Hondas I-Vtec system works very similar as well reducing emissions and increasing gas mileage.
@fast55chev The point is not that the car they are comparing the TDI to is a Merc, it is simply that clean diesel TDI is a lot cleaner than traditional IDI diesel.
It does not matter if the IDI is a Mercedes, Volvo, VW or a BMW with hundreds of thousands of miles or not. The engine platform is a dirty, suety, no cat ,oil burning pig. I love them, but they just aren't up to par anymore.
I have experienced both first hand, there is no comparison.
@Teenagefreedomfightr I am a big fan of Diesel (especially Bio-Diesel which is better than Ethanol) , but the USA has a culture issue with Diesels, and this infomercial goes a long way to educating people that things are better than they used to be. The lack of uniform availability of Diesel at all corner service stations is another issue that somehow needs to be addressed, which unfortunately won't be solved until more diesels are sold if we follow the capitalism model.
@fast55chev You obviously missed the whole point of the comparison. The older MB was a car many American were familiar with since MB was the only available Diesel Automobile ever imported into the USA in any significant quantity. I and many older American's know about this vehicle why you don't I am unsure of. The comparison was something that conjured up negative feelings from the past with something new. The commercial was appropriate for the market they were going for.
yeah thats true, but i Cant stand low rpm's and the rattling diesel sound. But yea with today's technology new diesels are very clean cars, and great for mileage.
@mrjost55 Not true they certain go a long way to educating people that the black sooty tailpipe emissions issues has been addressed, which is the cultural issue preventing many Americans from purchasing Diesels.
@itwontcomeout5678 mercedes is over 34 years old (from 1974-1976) what do you expect it to do? Back then they didn't care because they had no reason to....
@BboySloppy It wasn't about VW is better than MB it was about newer cleaner diesels. I am simply amassed at the amount of people like yourself who are nit picking this commercial, and failing to even hear or see the message they are attempting to convey which is newer diesels are not as polluting at the older ones. BTW it is "don't" and not "dont" or does your keyboard not have the ' ???

There was a closeup of both vehicles, and they were both running. The difference? The Touareg diesel is so silent you can barely hear it.
