The film is okay, but the book is a million times better, the main drawback of the film being it's from Walt Disney; therefore religion mocking gets out, politics mocking gets out, sour humour gets out, and so on.
Conclusion : read the books, their only weak point compared to the film is they don0t have Zooey Deschanel. But Bob, their humour is scathingly clever.
I quite enjoyed the movie, it made me laugh pretty much the whole time, its the kind of random i love
and no I havent read the books, and no i never saw the old version-
and no doubt their even better, the book usually is better than the movie and i hear the old one was closet to the book, but i loved this movie, and it makes me wanna read the books and even check out the original
the movie and book ar totally diferent. In the movie, made with a hollywood style, arthur is the hero and trillian the princess to be rescue. In the book the real hero is zaphod.
i had read the whole series ( 5 books) and Adams change the hero rol from zaphod to arthur.
I'm a Mathematics High school teacher and i use the movie to explain the probability.
I heard the radio series and read the first four books. I haven't seen the movie. Zaphod is an irresponsible frat boy. How can you call him a hero? Arthur is the main character and represents humanity, so he's the closest thing to a hero. Trillian turned down Arthur to become Zaphod's girlfriend. She's smart and capable, in keeping with the feminism of the time. She is never "rescued" unless it's in the fifth book. The first two books are best; the others are junk so I don't care about them.
sorry, i dont know so much about the radio series, nevertheless you are right about the irresponsible zaphod´s behaivor . You need to see the movie , really, is soo diferent. In a new first book edition one adam´s friend say they rewrited the story in several ways , even they do a 'bogons point of view' script, they need to sell the story to hollywood, a very difficult task.
There was something magical about the radio series. Video 7xbjGFLA6_8 gives a taste of it. Great voices and production, and tight. And you have to provide the visuals. I can't grasp Marvin as short and white rather than tall and metallic, and Zaphod and Arthur look they were borrowed from the Lord of the Rings movie. The director has a right to his interpretation, but I don't like it. But it's much better than the previous HHG2TG movie, which was underbudget crap.
"And, wow! Hey! whats this thing coming towards me very fast? Very, very fast. So big and flat and round. It needs a big wide sounding name like... Err... Ound... Round... Ground... Thats a good name! Ground! Hello Ground! I wonder if it'll be my friend."
I thought the movie was really good. Many things were left out, because they tried to cram 20 hours of plot into a 2 hour movie. Some people were incapable of understanding the movie, so they didn't like it. R.I.P Douglas Adams.
I was really disappointed in the movie. It was like they decided the best thing to do was cut all the dialogue from the book, and just make the cast act silly. The reason why Hitchhiker was so good was the brilliant wordplay. Watch the old BBC miniseries, it is light-years better than the movie.
I love this movie! Like I said in my profile, everytime I watch this movie I fall asleep. Not cause it's boring, but because it relaxes me. Ha Ha Good video too. Bravo!

One of the few times I can say the movie nearly lived up to the books name. Both are great.

I liked this better than the TV series. The books are brilliant though.
And, damn, you just KNOW you want your last words to be "so long and thanks for all the fish"

You're right, the movie and the book are very different. Have you ever seen the original English tv/radio series? It's a lot more like the book :)

it's very complicated cuz if they put all the scenes of the book the film length would have been 30 hours!
trouduc00 4 years ago
Yes, but they put IN scenes that weren't in the book, so it's not completely a time issue.
Spampoems 4 years ago
AFAIK, the additional scenes were things Douglas himself had written or planned for the Hollywood version.
jasonmoyer 4 years ago
First I've ever head of that. Source?

Bonus stuff on the DVD, IIRC. I know for certain the POV gun was his idea, not sure about the new ending.
