@animefangirlxx Actually I'm thinking that might be Sherway Gardens. Mississauga Hospital was evacuated, and since SQ1 is not too far away, I have to guess it was as well.
I was two months before my 14th birthday when it happened. I lived in a house five or six blocks away. We were evacuated at 3am...we almost got missed by firefighters and neighbor that came in looking for us. I was babysitting my two youngest brothers. I remember the night still to this day. We were first moved meadowvale then to the house where my mom was in Lorne Park. We got evacuated from there at 9pm that night. We ended up for the week in Scarborough with someone.
lol damn this was 13 years before i was born......the only time when i saw squareone an actual square was during the 90s......damn i wish they would invent a time machine so i can go back to explore 70s 80s mississauga
I was 3 years old living in Meadowvale at that time. I recognize the old scenes of the Square One shopping Centre, the two-lane Mavis Road, and Hurontario Street and North Service Road by the QEW where the reporter was standing.
@allstarzchampion102 Oh yes! I remember how is was on the north and west sides, there was nothing at that time, not even the 403 was there yet! No Sega City Pladium, no condos, nothing! Hurontario Street at that time was only 4 lanes.
I lived in Streetsville at this time and saw this as it happened. It lit my neighborhood up like a surreal daylight, lots of people around us evacuated, but we stayed.
i remember this.the next area they were going to move on to for evacuation was east oakville if they did not get it contained, they did thankfully. it was pretty scary stuff.
I remember I was watching SNL and I looked out and the sky went orange in an instant and then the windows shook..... and I lived in Clarkson! (about 5 miles away). I thought it was the refineries in Port Credit. It's funny how the initial report says 10K evacuated when it eventually went to 250K.
@Parkwaymania what network where you watching snl on and did you watch sctv that night as well? did you guys pick up an nbc affiliate up there or did ctv, cbc or global air snl up there...
saw citytv's archival footage of this event earlier in their 6pm news...i could almost hear the late glen cole (God bless him) saying part of his trademark "citypulse" intro voice-over: "november 10, 1979...this...iiis toronto!" :P
anyway, seriously, it's a miracle that no one died in this explosion...hoping that an explosion like this NEVER happens again...
Funny, I was born early Nov.12, 1979, my poor mother kept being shuffled from hospital to hospital in the midst of her labour. What a way to start my life! lol
I remember it well. My then fiance (now long ago ex-wife) was assigned as a relief worker to provide coffee, food, etc. to the police and fire forces fighting the fire, etc.
I like the report -- plenty of repetition of the word "deadly," but somehow calmer than I imagine the coverage would sound today. And I like the snappy editing after 1:39 supporting the narration.
This is my first memory I was 3 yrs old. I remember the house mooved and I saw a ball of fire!! Lived close to mavis and dundas!! carzy stuff

This happened on my 10 birthday. Then exactly 10 years later, the Berlin wall fell.

Could this have been an 'inside job' style of terrorism like 9/11, or all those earthquakes of 2011?

Now I know why this video doesn't have a pop up advertisement. Because, Nu Finish, the once a year car polish. LOL.

@BCFJTrain i think the explosion happened near the intersection of mavis and dundas, on the train tracks that run through mavis.

I have about 49 seconds of the Sunday edition of "The National" and the lead story was the Mississauga Train Derailment.

@MrLarrylocken It would've been the NBC affiliate out of Buffalo, WGR. I don't remember watching SCTV that evening.

I have a suspicion that the reason this tape exists is because of sports fans collecting football broadcasts...
Poor George McLean, longtime CBC weekend anchor, became quite bitter about being passed up time and again for the top anchor job on the National.

Bonus: the police drove Rabbits! 1:20 - 2:23.

No! ... that would have been Peel Regional Police and they of course didn't drive VW Rabbits. Those were from some other authority or organization.
