What happened (or what i believed happened) was when the world comes to an end the wolves find the entrance to paradise (basically the world is reborn as paradise), but because of darcias eye ball (which was evil) there was corruption in paradise, which over time turned it into the world it is today or in the future.

And kiba and friends where reborn.

This, clannad and Air damned there killed me, almost drowned in my tears. All had happy but sad ending, the chars got what they wished for in the end but they got it in suched a f'd up way. Same with fate/stay night. I'm kinda glad they stopped XXXholic in the anime because it if followed the manga my eye balls would be all shriveled up XD.
