There are different varieties if khat. In Yemen and East Africa, people chew mostly fresh leaves. These cannot be transported to places abroad. There is a strong khat from Kenia wrapped in Banana leafs which is the stems of the fresh shoots.This is a very potent variety and popular with Somaali diaspora. From this variety one only chews the bark of the stems.

The bark can be red. Its pretty strong.And its not cheap.There is a strict regimen of who will pay an evenings chew of Khat for everyone.
