  • A very enjoyable cover, by the Boss, end of story for me. Johnny paid homage, and respect to Bruce, and Springsteen returned it. That is nothing more, or less, than pure respect toward each other. Respect them as they respected each other.

  • I love love love this, thought I was the only one who knew and loved it, good job Bruce, your the man.xxooDonna frOm N.H.

  • I love this song great great classic song

  • shivers.....

  • HEY...Wake up call to all...this is a tribute...it's not supposed to be compared to the original...Nothing compares to the original...they are covers...we get that...these special versions made to honor JC and are the very fabric of what inspires those very talented few that have the gift to break boundries and love it...I have it next to Moonlight Sonata on my play list..which is right next to Metallica "One"...the message is "Johnny Cash was and is Bad Ass!.....

  • wtf !

  • 5 dislikes?!!!!!!!!! HAHA....losers....beautiful song, beautiful cover ....xxxxx

  • AM I playing this right in my video

  • I have been looking for this! Thank you!!!!!!

  • God, Bruce is good.

  • Epic performance. Dig my page if you like sort of thing.

  • This is clearly Bruce's own version of song, so I don't compare it with the original. Both are great.

  • Loved Johnny Cash, had the pleasure of meeting him...this is a beautiful tribute to and by a great artist

  • I love Bruce. I love Johnny Cash.

Johnny Cash's recording of this song makes me cry.

    Bruce's kind of annoys me.

    Honest...

  • Kinda strange. I prefer this version to Johnny's but I prefer Johnny's version of Bruce's " Highway Patrolman " . Either way it's two giants of music and I can drink happily listening to either one

  • Thanks for sharing it!

  • A great song by an amazing / very vercitle musical artist

  • Johnny Cash & Bruce Springsteen are my 2 all-time favourite artists. Bruce did the song justice, though I prefer J.R.'s version.

  • Johnny did see him play it.

  • Johnny was a legend but i believe if he would have saw Bruce play that and talked to him after he would have said "Son.... Damn You Are The Boss." lol

  • good

  • I think this is a good version.

  • i like Bruce's version better

  • says the guy with a Username in common with a Ricky Martin song....

  • musically more soulful than the original, and it does the lyrics justice. I like Johnny Cash but if you've heard one Johnny Cash tune you've pretty much heard 'em all. I think some of Cash's more memorable work was when he sang with other artist (e.g., Dylan on "NASHVILLE SKYLINE"). Younger guys like Bruce & Travis Tritt (listen to Travis' version of "I WALK THE LINE") are more versatile and accomplished musicians. Cash had a unique singing voice but he was not a great guitarist or arranger.

  • i think this is a wonderfull interpritation of a wonderfull song and i think guys it is a tribute and i really dont think that Mr springstein is trying to out do jonny, but to say thank you for the inspiration that jonny gave to young musicians at the time.

  • i dont think jonny cash would have any problem with this...hey jonny cash covered a nine inch nails song that didnt sound anything like the original...plus bruce just makes this sound damn good

  • "better" is a matter of personal taste. I love Johnnys version and I love this version. Which one is better I don´t care. If Bruce did the exact same way as Johnny, what point would it be? You can stick to the original in the first place then? If I hear somebody do a cover I expect him/her to make it his or her way..add a little flavour to it.

  • Comment removed

  • he is not trying to do it the same way that johnny did. he is just singing it his own way. ofcourse johnny makes the original better. but that is not what bruce is trying to brake. he does this from his heart to show us all that this music is perfect

  • Elvis, Johnny and Bruce.

Michael Jackson, reach them to the knees.

  • i always thought covering songs was for honoring another artist, not topping them. thank you that you enlightened me on that....

  • Did I say one word about not honoring??? I didnt, I made a general statement of my opinion with nothing metioning anything about covering songs! I gave my opinion so worry about yourself...ok...thank you

  • @ajp5394 What? Are you a D-BAG? HE torrrped Johnnny at this one you farking duchbaggerino. You suckfarte my cick and bells. Come and kick my shmellyarseholley.

  • @RudyCasordapek DUCHBAGGERING?

  • Stunning song, stunning bruce!!!

  • Springsteen, Cash

    2 great Americans

  • MERCI +++

  • Why all this furor about ranking things? Two artists, two interpretations, both of them outstanding. You think your opinion matters to anyone but yourself? You think profanity and ignorance and terrible spelling are going to change any minds? Grow, you should excuse the expression, up!

  • seriously, these people are freakin morons, like who u want and appreciate ALL the great artists.. freakin 10 year olds and their meaningless pissing contests.. so sad

  • should hav left it to johnny?! it was a beautiful tribute... open your eyes!!!

    johnny loved bruce

  • Johnny and Bruce

    Two legends

  • Twat

  • I think that Springsteen's version is outstanding, don't understand how you don't get it but to each his own

  • Don't know the english word but I got "Gänsehaut"...

  • I think you're looking for the word "goosebumps," and I couldn't agree more. Give my love to Bruce! ^_^

  • very good!

  • I PREFER Bruce's version to Johnny Cash! Great job, Bruce! Love to you too!

  • Yep, the commenters who say he butchered the words, don't realize that Bruce often changes a few words in his covers, deliberately.

  • rock never fired bruce like country fired johnny cash but thats country for you they never gave a shit until he died

  • Welche Sprache ist das? Brucisch?

Nee im Ernst, der verschluckt ja in einem Maße Wörter.

  • Bruce did a great version, maybe you should try the Village People they might be more up you alley. Different Strokes for Different Folks.

  • ever hear david allan coe do that one?

  • the boss can do no wrong

  • So beautiful !!

  • yeah he did think it was important but in my own opinion i just love all of cash's lyrics n if i were to cover one of his i culdnt bring myself to do it, id make it my own musically but at the end of the day it is his story and the way he phrases it makes all of his songs so brilliant, but that is just my opinion

  • i like it, i love the bruce, but it seems to really annoy me that hes messing wi the lyrics, i dont kno, i thinck its just a bit disrespectful to the great man

  • It 's nice to see music bringing people together to share a positive experience

  • Yes it is,

  • I didnt expect you to be able to detect it big fella dont worry.

The only thing depressing about my life is arguing with redneck Bruce Springsteen fans who think the term "douche bag" is a valid means of ending a discussion as to whether or not this is a poor quality cover of a simply wonderful song. (which it is)

I have just racked up a few lines and i'm going down the pub, so please dont waste any more of my time, as i am far too sober for this time of day as it is.

  • Have fun.

    Shit-teethed Brit.

  • i thought about you today.

    love you x

  • Nah, i'm pretty sure you're just a fucking idiot.

By the way, what is a "rick singer"?

    Douche bag.

  • it was supposed to say rock, but obviously the point is lost on someone who actually incorporates the term "Douche bag" into their personal idiolect, and im afraid by pointing out the irony of using such a term will be further lost on you.

  • Could be the fact that there is no irony in it. You, sir, are plain and simple...a douche bag. Have fun with your sad, lonely, depressing life.

  • Cash adjusted the lyrics of Bruce's IM ON FIRE and HIGHWAY PATROLEMEN to fit the way he sang them as well, and so what?

  • and Johnny 99

  • what an amazing song and these guys both covered eachothers songs so why the hell are people bein so petty to blame the boss for changin a couple words?i dont think jonny cash would have any problems with the way this song was covered..

  • Awsome, and Bruce you can change whatever line you want

  • Magical. Lovely! 5/5.

a nice fusion of 2 great artists.

  • agree with tarbaby71

  • I don't particularly like it when assholes like yourself use commas instead of periods.

    Are you fucking stupid?

  • no,,,,,,,,,,,,not fucking stupid,,,,just using comma's where I choose to. Just as you choose to search thru all the comments and hang shit on people for no reason.

  • another great bruce delivery!

  • Bruce is the man!!!

  • "Thanx Johnny". Rock on Bruce.

  • I can't figure out whos version I like better! I think both are sung with different feelings and in different styles so it would be wrong to compare them.

Bruce Springsteen does this amazingly tho

  • DAMN RIGHT CHIPPY! Comparisons are for insecure a^^h*les!! Anybody that disagrees with Chippy can kiss my sister's black cat's a^^!!!

  • cant stand it. great song. johnny's the man.

  • i love johnnys version Better but i like this one too

  • fucking amazing! a+ i love bruce and johnny they are both legends

  • very nice A+

  • This version is much better than Cash's,(all due respect to the man in black,) but this is how this song was supposed to be sung. Thanks Boss

  • I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. I like Bruce's version, but it is not better than Johnny's by any means. They have completely different voices and singing styles and therefore you cannot compare the two. It is apples to oranges. They both sound amazing. And for future reference, nobody does anything better than Johnny Fuckin Cash!

  • I like this version much better and i've listened to both ! :]

  • I really can't choose which one I like best, but Bruce is a little higher on my list :)

everybody thinks it's weird that I'm listening to this kind of music, cause I'm only 15 :p

Just wondering if you had some Bruce Springsteen songs to recommend?? :)

  • if you like this kind of music from Bruce, check out anything from his NEBRASKA album, THE GHOST OF TOM JOAD amd DEVILS AND DUST

  • great song! :)

  • pick he one ya want...boss n cash..thats why have this conversation..god bless em///good bye to britney

  • love it...

  • sweet as.

  • the boss is my favourite singer, but johnny's version is way better

  • agreed

  • does anybody know what tuning he is using on his guitar?

  • I've never heard Cash's version. So i cant say if this one is better or not. But What i do can say is that this is really good.

  • he plays it exactly like "Matamoros Banks" from Devils And Dust...

  • Great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Greg and Rose

  • This is one of my favourite, Bruce singing a cover song, clips. I also am very fond of him singing Angel Eyes.If it is on the tube check it out.

  • I totally disagree, this is the best cover for Rose. Bruce doesn't try to top the original, but he gives an emotional tribute.

  • I see what you mean, but I strongly disagree though. I like this cover, a little unbalanced, but he managed to get it very emotional, and make the music focus alot :).

  • Salve Salve a magia q envolve Springsteen...!

    Esse ai domina..!

    Abraço..

    maravilhoso posto...!

    Thanks!

    Gerbes Aguiar, Brasil.

  • lots of emotion from Bruce. Excellent cover of a classic. Thanks for adding.

  • its you thats bored not him

  • Yeah, I agree. Not a patch on the man who originally sang the song (Johnny Cash for those of you who don't know)

  • Bruce you're the best! Tougher than all the rest...

  • this is my favorite song of his to sing at karaoke, love the story of the song, you really have to know how to tell a story in order to sing johnny cash well and bruce springsteen really knows how to tell stories with his songs :)

  • johnny would like the boss to cover him,,,as he has covered the boss

  • There are only 2 people who write songs about everyday life Bruce and Johnny I love you so much Bruce you are amazing and beautiful

  • That's why he's the boss...awesome!

  • this is so fucking beautiful =) thank you uploader =) thank you

  • he looks so sad.. :(

  • bruce looks tortured signing this...bruce rules. You'd think he wrote it the way he's singing it and if you watch his face it's almost like he is signing in 1st person.

  • I love Bruce's version of this song.

  • OMG. i never tought i can hear this song be sung by famous artist. we're singing this song together with my friends in the early 1980s. thanks a lot fniazi1. bring back those good memories. thanks a lot U-tube

  • Johnny Cash not famous enough for ya?? :P

  • my respect for bruce has just increased

  • i agree smilin, this one and Dave M's long black veil. Two tremendous covers

  • dave probably was doing a cover of the cash version... but that wasn't a cash original either... Lefty Frizzell??? or maybe traditional? anybody?

  • Quite possibly the best cover of a song by Johnny ever.

  • Not just possibly. It is the best Cash-cover.And remember: The best Springsteen cover is recorded by Johnny (Highway Patrolman)!

  • and johnny 99...

  • this is almost identical to Matamoros Banks. I prefer other songs by Johnny

  • Yep, you can tell that I totally agree.

Really awesome versions. Always gives me goosebumps.

Dare I say that I like Bruce's version much better than Cash's. Who knows what he'd done with it on American recordings ...

  • Thanks for posting this interesting vid.

Personally, I don't like this version. It doesnt' really communicate the things Bruce says he values at the beginning of the song...

However, I think it's very cool that Bruce is wearing all black.

  • Interesting, Joe, I never realised that, but you got a point here. Still I think it's a terrific version cause even though he loved Cash for all the things he sid he did it in his own style. Just a matter of taste, isn't it ;-)

  • Well, I actually can't believe that I've written something negative about the Boss for the world to see. I *really* like Johnny's version, though. Especially the one on the last album, When the Man Comes Around.

Like I said, it's great to see the Boss wearing allblack. Yessir. Looks great! ;)
