I always thought this was a great show. I recently cut my cable down to the very basic package so I dont have nearly as many choices as I used to. I started watching this show every morning and love it. I think Carroll Oconner was a great actor.
I remember absolutely nothing about this show....I DO remember hearing the theme song quite a bit in my younger years. I just watched an episode of "Pawn Stars" where someone tried to sell a script from this show....brought back memories.
I have talked to that conductor that was standing in the baggage car door when the train passed he told me that he had No idea he would be in the opening of a tv series se said it was just hot in that baggage car that night and had the door open

@MrIHorbert Your parents had or have very good taste. This show was based on the 1960's novel and motion picture of the same name and was about what a police unit in a fictional Georgia small town deals with in terms of law & order. It premiered on NBC-TV on March 6, 1988.
ray charles originated the song and they stole it and remixed like 100 times just like all the other classic stuff like aint no sunshine billy withers wrote that
I talked to the conductor that was standing in the baggage door in the opening train scene last yar he said he had no idea it would end up in a tv series that the City of New Orleans in the opening scene
I used to watch this show when I was about 6yo to close to 9 and I'd watch it religiously and I'd sing the theme song and whenever I'd sing it I'd just feel real powerful.
And Howard Rollins, if I'm not mistaken, committed suicide. What a bummer. He was awesome as Sidney Poitier's movie character. And isn't that Archie Bunker? Wow, talk about a 180.
I called MGM and they gave me this number to check if it was a box set and of course it is not as of yet. The guy said that if they have enough request that MGM would box the set. So please call and write so they can have enough request
Call 20th century fox at this number and tell them u want to put in a customer request for tv series
ok i have to be honest. i dont think i ever watched one episode of this..i mean i was a kid. but this has to be one of the best theme songs ever!! i use to run to the tv and sing-along with the guy (i never knew the words. so i mostly mumbled) but boy when that last line came, my favorite part, i knew every word.."In the HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT offfffffffff the nighhhhhhhhhhhht"!!!
@SwitchbladeKitty that is so cool. I Loved Carroll O'Connor on "All in the Family" (my all-time favorite show) and never watched this show because I didn't want to ruin my impression of 'Archie Bunker'...but I am more interested in seeing this show. Everbody commenting seems to LOVE this program...I am curious now.
Oh, yeah he was a real son of a gun in AITF! On the contrary, he's almost like a big teddy bear in ITHOTN. It just goes to show how well-rounded of an actor he is. :)
37 year old black man from Toledo Ohio that grew up in Monroe Michigan!!!!!!!!! Mr. Tibbs, Lonnie, Parker, Chief Gillespie, and Bubba Skinner were some bad ass dudes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All the new cop shows on TV these days pale in comparison to "In The Heat". The Closer, Law and Order (with all its spin-offs included), CSI, you name it -- NONE compares! In most TV shows these days, men are shown as either buffoons or dumber than any woman. Give me the 80s shows and some of the early 90s shows any day. O'Connor was "the bomb" as Gillespie. Rod Steiger's portrayal of Gillespie in the '67 movie doesn't hold a candle to O'Connor's.
It would be nice if This Tv would air this show. This is 1 of the 3 shows Carroll O'Connor will always be remember by. All in the Family & Archie Bunker's Place are the other 2.
Great theme and a great show. As someone else said, they don't make them like this anymore. One of the top 5 dramatic shows of all time. Thanks for posting.
@billiefan2000 this song actually comes from the original 1967 film version of "In the Heat of the Night", where it was originally performed by Ray Charles and the Raylettes.
