  • i heard that the venom these things have can kill a person is that true? i know the box jelly fish is the deadliest but i was curious if these were deadly?

  • looks like a cornish pasty but more badass.

  • I got stung by one of those a long time ago

  • Beautiful - but it's a shame sometimes people see things from such a selfish point of view that they can't admire the incredible diversity of life.

  • @meltingcastle I completely agree. The diversity of life on the planet is amazing, but few people appreciate it or are even aware of it.

  • yah my mom go stung by one

  • i'm portuguese and i didn't even know that's how it's called XD nice vid tho :) haven't seen one in a while

  • DD: I HATE THOSE THINGS.

  • fun fact: Some species of octopi will seek out a Man o' War and, being immune to its toxins, tear off its tentacles and use them as weapons against other species.

  • In Sydney, we get them a lot in summer because of warm water, high tides and seabreezes.

  • In Sydney, we get them a lot in summer because of warm water, high tides and seabreezes.

  • so why does its called portuguese man o war? does it foundly only in portugal? or its a man from war?

  • wow. i'v never seen one in real life, i go to daytona beach florida, and panama city beach florda, i'v been going for 8 years maybe, i'v never seen one.

  • Those tentalcle of the last man-o-war was quite short. Fully grown tentacles on a man-o-war can grow up to 50-60 feet long!!!

  • I have visited Daytona beach numerous times since I was three years old. I am going there this summer at age 18. I have always been facinated with the jellyfish and have developed some "Be careful not to step on the jellyfish" skills. I also missed the stingrays. My dad would hold me up high so I would be able to look down and watch them swim right under us. I also swam with a wild manatee at daytona. However, I think he only liked me for my sparkily bathing suit Xo X)

  • i hate those things, iv got stung like 10 times

  • dont step on them the tentacles of them is better than jelly fish

  • Portuguese sent them to the sea... they conquer it.

  • Oh man I would really hate to step on one of those!

  • is it bad?? yesterday I saw tons of them on ft. Lauderdale beach and stepped on 'em with my dad =/

  • @zeon1 they are the most venomous creature in the ocean, or on earth for that matter.

you and your dad are gonna die.

  • no, it's definetely not the most venomous creature in the ocean

  • ,it could kill you,

  • i caught one of these it swam right beside me in florida i thought it was a baloon with puke underneth it lol we where gonna keep it but let it go

  • I feel so cruel. The whole time I thought "Pick it up and pop it!".

    Wow I'm mean D:

  • Nah, that's not mean.

  • i see those a lot when im at the beach but the top of them look like dumplings XD

  • These Animals Are Amazing i Rekon, They Look So Amazing!

    I Would Love To See One Myself. (;

  • I got stung by a smaller version one of those in Hawaii...it was terrible...right on my hand...

  • those are the most painful jellyfish in Florida! Avoid them at all costs.

  • I've seen those at the beach in Menbourne... they had a swarm of those.

  • theres a lot in miami

  • POP IT!!!

  • Scary! Was it alive? Does it die when it gets washed ashore?

  • There were several washed ashore. Some were dead from lack of water, but the tentacles can still release poison if you step on them even if they die.

  • Awesome I learned about these in my ecology class!

  • Very Good video I'm amazed at the length of those tentacles.

  • Thanks Keauno.

  • oh look, its natures most useless animal. A sac of floating air and it stings.

Why exactly did God or what ever you believe/evolution let this thing come into existance. What purpose does it serve?

  • Anytime an ecological niche is available, an organism will evolve to exploit that niche. From an ecological viewpoint, the purpose it serves is to take its place in the food chain in order to keep everything in balance.

If its niche eventually disappears (such as its food supply drys up or another organism outcompetes it, then the Man O''War will go extinct.

It is interesting to note that 99% of all species that have ever lived on this planet have gone extinct.

  • i knew that, i was just questioning why it is such a pointless formation of animals. Not bones, no really body. Just a hub of lots of little critters being annoying.

  • Tentacles could draw out up to 50 feet long. Next time you see one, be careful because they are fucking poisonous. I also agree with you, 99% of the species have either evolved or have been extinct.

  • this is the question I ask myself whenever I see these stupid things. what is their point? Do they benefit the planet in any way? No, they don't.

I wish jellyfish would just go away already

  • Everything has a place.Maybe to keep our sorry butts out of the water. We do way more damage than any animal but our egos say its OK we are the most important beings on the planet.

  • If sea creatures are capable of thought processes, they might wish that we go away so we stop ruining their enviroment. If it's a choice of them or us, I choose us, but we are messing them up a lot more than the relatively small percentage of stings we get.

By the way, can you tell me how humans benefit the planet from their point of view?

  • You're right. We don't benefit the planet at all :P

  • @ca1234ts well the nomure jellyfish is pretty much ruining the fishermans job in japan ... so i guess their gettiing back at us for ruinging the see ?

  • @ca1234ts whoa dude, you are like such an awesome environmentalist...blech

  • @ca1234ts because sea life that threatens jellyfish is getting smaller their population is growing. because there are not as many sea turtles to hunt them we should take it upon ourselves to kill them

  • @12tayres I think the oil spill did a good job at that. right? :D

  • the only creatures that dont benefit the planet is You and me and everyone else. Jelly fish are part of the food chain in the Sea.

  • i hate those things man, whenever i go skimboarding its hard to avoid them

  • when i went there i thought one was a cool blue rock and i picked it UP

  • yay least 1 of em is dead 1 less vicious creature of the earth

  • if the man o war is a colony of animals stuck together then is the blue bubble float thing an animal too?

  • THEY ARE BLUE CORNISH PASTYS!!!

  • dude. i got stung by one of these things at saint pete beach florida. those things hurt!

  • I hope they cleaned them off the beach 0_0 Because someone could have stepped on it (like me) XD

  • Ude those things suck. I was at that beach the 22nd. I went into surf. I got stung on my leg and had a red mark on my leg for 2 days. and the pain wsa really bad. it was a goood story for Christmas lol.

  • dude i cant even see what it looks like cuz u cant stop moving...,.

  • Hit the pause button.

  • thats the closest thing to the blob that exists.

  • wow

  • what's the point of these thing's lives? they just float around... killing innocent people. nasty looking things... >:/

  • Found on yahoo answers:

Why should there be a why at all? I can't think of any actual reason for my existence or, for that matter, your existence. I don't need that kind of justification for existing.

  • From yahoo: The basic purpose of life appears to be to propagate life, and not necessarily to develop and advance the earth. All life forms are passengers on earth, & the earth might be better off without any passengers. However, if the earth was populated with only one life form, likely it would not survive. Even bacteria produce alcohol and poison their own environment (alcohol kills bacteria). Many life forms (animals & plants) depend upon each other for food or to scatter and fertilize seeds

  • From Yahoo Answers: part 1 of 2-

Why do they exist? There is no real explanation for this. It is a question humans have asked for thousands of years... "Why do I exist?" "what is the purpose of life?"

BUT, as far as what they contribute to the development and advancement of the earth?? Absolutely everything. Every living thing on this planet is somehow interconnected to every other living thing (and to non-living things). The relationships are far too complex for us to understand but a

  • From Yahoo Answers: part 2 of 2-

change in one population has a ripple effect and far reaching implications throughout their ecosystem (and beyond).

Just because the benefit of a species cannot be seen with superficial observation does not mean that it isn't extremely important to the big picture.

  • everything has a reason. for example: who needs nasty, poisonouse, ugly, etc spiders. well if there were no spiders other insects would be more dominant = bigger probem for humans.

if there were no manowars seas would be filled with plankton (at least more than they're now) and turtles could only eat other jellyfish.

  • cool i stepped on a jellyfish at boynton beach it was pink that was like 7 years ago tho, theres alot of jellyfish that get washed up on shore their i live in ft.lauderdale

  • Portuguese man o wars freak me out. I got stung by one, once!

  • people overexaggerate at their tentacle length the longest they get is 30 ft and thats still impressive

  • apparently one of the world's most painful sting o.o

  • I was stung all over my body. Had some breathing difficulty until we got back into shore (2 hours). Most definantly the most painful thing I have ever felt in my life and I have had 3rd degree burns, multiple serious lacerations, a few painful operations (damn you septoplasty, and a few broken bones, but this takes the cake for sure. Like leaving your body in boiling hot water for 2 hours.

  • i thought they were 3m tall? or is this just a movie i watched.

  • when i was lil i lived in africa- they used to show up on the beach all da time. was it one of these? looks lyke it

  • Do man of war sometimes kill? i heard u need immediate antidote or else die

  • they can kill, but it's more like an allergic reaction. my 3 year old got stung by one of these in florida during 4th of july, it left a bad mark, but thank God it didn't hurt her seriously. she screamed horribly, but besides the welts it left(for about 3 weeks) she was fine.

  • The venom can be fatal, it depends on the dosage and on the person's body.

  • The sting can be so painful that swimmers go into shock and drown.

  • Got stung when I was a little kid a long time ago. Don't remember the pain, but do remember screaming bloody murder. I was swimming with my father who thought it was a balloon and grabbed it. Total yankee move in florida. It got both of us.

  • i got stung by one of these bad boys a couple of weeks ago.... not nearly that big but it still packs a meeeaaan punch

  • when i was in bermuda they had a sign on the beach warning about these things. wasn't until later that i found out how dangerous they were. good thing i didn't know i prob. wouldn't have went in the water

  • can anyone tell me which has the most painfulest sting out of a portuguese man o war and a box jellyfish

  • box jellyfish

  • thanks

  • Box jellyfish. Most intimidating? The Man of war easily.

  • thats amazing!

  • Jelly fish are strange creatures, and so is this Man o' War. Really good footage here, good sub.

  • WHY arent you running?!

  • I didn't need to. They weren't close enough to me because I was using a telephoto lens.

  • Man o Wars aren't jelly fish

  • Please watch the video again and read the comment I made to kilroywashere1 last year.

  • dam look how big that tentacle was.

  • I wouldnt touch it... It is a DEADLY group of polyps, which happen to be the most dangerous microscopic orginisam on the planet. =0

  • usually it isn't fatal, it just hurts like hell

  • I'd like to touch one tentacle, just nod one with a finger, for the challenge of it. Just to see if it's as 'painful' as they say. It can't be that bad, save if you step on them with your bare foot. Just touching it should be no issue.

  • i grabed one like a dumbfuck and it wrapped around my arm/hand...worst pain in my life...i would have rather broken a bone, pain lasted for about 4 hours

  • You would need to wash it all off with water and then get taken to a hospital for treatment. And this is some incredibly nice footage.

  • Tentacles can be up to 165 feet long!!!

  • i already know all the information about these animals.so everything the man is saying is true.if u wear pani hoes and the tentacles touch u,nothing will happen.

  • yup not jellyfish, i'm only watching it once i'm terribly sorry, nice vid, i love the natural world

  • Glad you liked it. When I put the video on youtube I never thought it would get so many viewings.

  • Portuguese Man o' War are not jelly fish.

  • I mentioned they are not jellyfish later in the video, watch it again.

  • no, u dont die in 2 minutes, ive gotten stung by alot

  • it looks like a empanada................

  • I was touched by one of these in Brazil (Florianopolis) while bodyboarding. Dindnt know what it was at first, I knew it as soon as it touched me. It was the first time I saw them... VERY PAINFUL!

  • one thing if you touch one of these (Portuguese Man o' War) you can die in 2 minutes so i don't think that you would have been stung by one

  • no try an hour smart one

  • umm yeah the ones that kill you are of the Box jelly family, man of wars

  • You mean the box jellyfish genus, found around the coasts of australia and southern asia.

  • no you dnt, i was stung by one about an hour and a half ago. it hurts loads, but you dnt die, i didnt even have to go to the hospital or doctors!

  • the messed up thing about these things is that they can have super transparent tentacles as long as multiple football fields...so if you see that bubble far away good chance you could be a in close a range of a zap..plus..i wonder if you can pop those things.

  • LMAO!!!...as long as multiple football fields? The tentacles average about 3 ft long but have been as long as 33 feet....but not hundreds of feet!!

  • Ruicompany i accidentaly marked your comment as spam....Yes they can be kept in an aquarium only for scientific purposes though. Ask your professor or somebody who studies these things.

  • i got stung by one of those when i went to florida

  • Can these organisms be maintained in artificial conditions (aquaria) or something like that? I am a marine biologist student and i am planning to study them for the developement of new pain killer drugs. Any sugestions?

  • i've been stung by a man o' war, only slightly and it felt like i was sliding naked down a greasy stripper's pole covered in razor blades

  • so their not considered jelly fish???

  • No there not, portugese man o war's are not jellyfish, but their still deadly.

  • I got stung by one or w/e at oahu.... the locals were like.. that's a MAN O WAR!! they made me piss on my arm hahaha

  • The tentacle may be up to 100ft!

  • so with that pocket of air, can they sink at all?

  • Thats if there tentacles are heavier than them but this is rare and anyway it would not sink to the bottom, it would be underneath the water.

  • hey i have a friend that got stung by one of those things can u give me some info on it thanks

  • Theyre one of the most deadly jellyfish in the world. You should be pretty proud of yourself if you get stung and live.

  • their not the most dangerous.

the box jellyfish is. one sting can kill 250 adult humans

  • and over 5,000 mice!

  • Do u have a Portuguese Man O War season in Daytona aslo can you rechange the title to Portuguese Man O War cause its hard to find.

  • Good idea, I added Portuguese to the beginning of the title. I don't know if there is a Portuguese Man O' War season in Florida because I don't live here. I was on vacation at the time.

  • Ws this on cell phone

  • No, I recorded it on a 6 megapixel digital camera with a 12X optical zoom lens. Why do you ask, does it look grainy?

  • Its pixelating

  • usually the jellys that float in to oc maryland are dead. some are alive out in the surf. I saw a manowar at ocian city md I didn't think they occured up here.

  • this jelly fish was nqmed after in my oppinion the best racehorse to step on a track (3

  • I grew up in Daytona Beach. It feels like your being shocked.

  • The Man O'War have also been found in Hawaii. During my stay on Kauai last month, a lifeguard closed our favorite beach the day before because a few people got stung by the Man O'Wars. These deadly "fish" move anywhere the tradewinds push them, even from South America. Be careful - don't get stung!

  • Have u ever got stung tell me cause I want to know what it feels like.

  • it burns like a little b**** :|

  • they are actually not jellyfish

  • I mentioned somewhere near the middle of the video that someone on the beach had corrected me on that. When I got home that day I looked it up and saw that they are actually siphonophores.

  • yea they normally come in groups thats y they r acctually hydroids

  • did u find lots on the day+

  • I found a lot. They were washing up all over the place.

  • u ever been stung by these its excrutiating and there has been deaths.they do hav an air sac that they float on water in florida they are common in the surf

  • wot country is this in what state cause i see these man o wars in uk

  • Florida, USA

  • ok i live in the uk,wales and i see them on the beach.Theres many on miami satellite and cocoa beach
