Genial... esto si es un verdadero despecho a la antigua; muy buena interpretación de la filarmónica de Berlín e indudablemente una prodigiosa voz la de Ana María Martínez.
BRAVO! What a voice--the soul of Spain! Check out the version of the aria by Caballe, but I think that Ana Maria Martinez sings with more passion. Note the intensity from about the 3 minute mark to the shattering conclusion.
Wonderful! I love all Zarzuela arias, the special influences of Spanish music (Iberic, Arab, etc.) make them very rich and interesting musically. Martinez has a wonderful voice and technique. I just wonder if she's not a mezzo in fact. Her dark timbre, the tone of her high notes and ease at lower notes seem to indicate she's more of a lyric mezzo in the manner of a Susan Graham.
Interesting that you'll find such a dark sound on a lyric soprano, huh? That's the uniqueness of the Puerto Rican "mix". African, Taino and Spanish. That rich, dark sound is easily recognized as telling of Ms. Martinez's black background. There's another hot-shot mezzo from Cabo Rojo with that same, warm, "black woman sound". I forget her name. Jossie somebody...I heard her do "De España Vengo" once...Aw, wow!!!
She sings gorgeous indeed, but suggesting replacing Dessay with Martinez is ridiculous. They are not at all the same voicetype. They could never sing the same repertoire. Don't misunderstand me: I LOVE MARTINEZ!!! ... I do not like Dessay, although I must admit she's a brilliant singer/actress.

Gorgeous! Now why isn't she at the MET more often? Replace Dessay with her.

She sounds like Susan Graham, except that she is a soprano. Her voice is much leaner than Fleming's, which is like heavy cream.

Such a dark timbre. Reminiscent of Fleming but much cleaner and without the hideous scooping. Brava!
