it's important to note that when they say it's just plain old blood, that's not quite right. The blood is considered to taste absolutely awful to canine and feline predators, so they get a taste of it and decide "this is a thing that is not worth the effort to eat". Doesn't work on birds though, so it's not a perfect defense!

Blood in your eyes blinds you (for a short while) and also irritates your eyes, the coyote im sure have encountered these lizards before and probably got squirted. And also the lizard eats ants, it's body is full of ant toxin, it probably taste horrible. It's probably just not worth it for the coyote to eat it.

i see a lot of confused posts so i will try 2 explain why this scare tactic workz. first of all, the coyote is not scared by the blood. it simply gets startled by the unsuspected squirt of liquid. this surprise should distract the coyote long enough for the lizard to make an escape. the running away part of the coyote was probably just an exaggeration that NatGeo put in there. and im sure that this tactic doesnt even work all the time. for example, what if the lizard misses the target?
