Doncaster's impressive station approach road was knocked down to make way for this, as were impressive buildings on Frenchgate and St Sepulchre Gate. The Grand Theatre is the only surviving building of Station Road.

You can find these clone shops anywhere so why would you go out of your way to go to Doncaster? In its original form, this was called the Arnedale Centre. Some of Doncaster's most impressive facades and fine buildings were knocked down to make way for it. It shifts the centre of gravity away from what remains of Doncaster's historic centre.

Look to the margins of this metropolitan borough and you will see the truth - Rossington, Edlington, Stainforth, Moorends, Thorne. All of them run down places. DN7 is the most likely postcode where householders will be burgled in the whole UK. I feel ashamed to say I was born there and would never go back.

This video presents a very sanitised view of Doncaster as DMBC would want you to see it. The reality is very different. A town that has lost so much of its identity and cultural heritage, some of the planning decisions there have been to the shame of DMBC. The recent decision to destroy the historic Gaumont Palace is so typical of DMBC.

Modern buildings and architecture have their place but there must be a place for heritage in Doncaster. Too much of the old town has been lost. Conservation areas need special protection. I also think that the old Gaumont/Odeon cinema should be saved.

I'm out of Doncaster right now but this does make it look strangely good.I'll be returning for a while at Christmas and I hope it's improved.

Maybe by the time Thatcher dies it'll be a decent place to live,seen as though she's responsible for all the problems it has now.

Who are all these morons writing down where they live in Doncaster, such as "Woodlands!" and "Intake" Whoop whoop - I work in Doncaster centre every day and the town is a dump, always has been and always will be. And I know what a dump looks like because I am from Sheffield (which is still infinitely better than Donny!)

Everyone's a critic, it is a shame that the natural beauty around Doncaster is not utilised.The whole of the Rhine valley can be compared to the Don valley(same industry coal & steel etc) the cities of Cologne & Dusselldorf have really turned them selves around in a very short period- having suffered mine closures etc.they have a lot of civic pride & were not abandoned by their government.

I like the Frenchgate Centre, but there's much more to Donny than just that.

"The biggest screen in Yorkshire"

I was deeply saddened to read that the Doncaster Odeon closed just recently. More than just a fantastic cinema, but also there were concerts there by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Sam Cooke, Buddy Holly. The Bolshoi Ballet was a sell-out when it played there in the 90s. A legendary building so please can we preserve more of the "old" Doncaster as well?

Great video guys. Used to live up in Hatfield (m180/m18 junction) and headed into Doncaster town a lot. Shame you missed out the meat and fish market as this is such a vibrant part of the town.
