  • soprano ultra leggero, muito bom !

  • Pensar en el potencial que tienen algunas cantantes que conozco!! o.O

  • This is the first album i got from the library. I loved it then and still do. Known for her high notes she also does some lovely ballad singing.

  • Cudowny, rewelacyjny głos.Dziękuję

  • Admirei muito essa soprano no filme A GRANDE VALSA, em tempos idos

  • she was not only a soprano coloratura, she was a leggero, almost ultra leggero, so of course she was coloratura!

  • And I was thinking, "How did a piccolo get in there?"

    That's awesome.

  • there is something very beautiful in her middle range - I love her thousands of times more than Sutherland !

  • 01:46 - Ow my gosh! o.O

  • :O

  • Única. Um verdadeiro pássaro!

  • I think Erna Sack is like Mado Robin: they both have mediocre technique and are unable to put feelings into what they sing. And, sadly, they became famous only because of their huge range and impressive high notes. I find them so boring and shallow...

  • @3F93 I agree

  • what an amazing voice!

  • Dessay, Dessay, Dessay!!! Are we talking about singers or the "shtick" Dessay does on stage? If she wants to "act" and not sing, as she has stated, GO ACT SOMEWHERE ELSE. Stop those horrible, new productions i see on TV from the Met. Thank God i don't go to the opera anymore. Yes, i'm one of those who grew up on Milanov, Barbieri, Warren, Price, Tebaldi, etc. So glad to have Serius/XM radio where i can hear the wonderful vintage performances without Junkworth & Ira Siff. Opera is Dead! Got it!!

  • ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿Alguien tiene las letras de esta pieza para que me las pase por favor????????????

  • What comes higher than a soprano? cos we have someone here like that. Bravo!

  • Não há palavras que definam esta interpretação.

    Só; Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!!!!!!!!

  • whoever can hit those notes are true sopranos. those who cant are second sopranos. since i cant hit those freaking high high nots i am sadly a second

  • Oh My God!!

  • Is she a human? :S

    What a voice?!

  • IS IT EVER POSSIBLE TO BE THIS FREAKIN GREAT IN HIGH NOTES???? JEEZUSSS.....SHE SOUNDS MORE LIKE A FLUTE

  • @dsok990 lol well she is a mezo soprano and can sing im whistle register while you most likley sing in falsetto and/or mendle register there just like diffrent ways of singing but you can be a soprano without being abel to sing in whistle register! (:

  • W-o-W!!! Amazing voice!

  • she had a career because she was a freak show, her intonation was a hot mess

  • ny absolute fav coloratura

  • preciosas voces que parece ya no salen....como de cuentos.......son incalificables por su encanto..........por sus prodigiosas impostaciones de ensueño......por su osadia hoiiliwoodense del glamour vocal.....precioso precioso.....

  • she's no curly!

    lllllmmmmmfffffaaaaaooooo!!!!!

  • It's her version they use in the three stooges episode when curly lip syncs. God what a beautiful voice!

  • after hearing this i no longer consider myself a soprano LOL! she is incredible!!

  • @Dsolo990 you shouldn't think like that! everyone has different colors :) i am a lyric coloratura soprano too. rarely i can reach the seventh octave but not as comfortable as her. she was incredible but the most incredible thing about her was her midriff. singing is not about how wide your range is, its about how you use it

  • vivid voice of my childhood . Tks for sharing

  • Very nice. Especially the last notes were unbelievable.

    Thank you.

  • @guilaumekabum

The problem is whehter it sounds well too. Otherwise, I think it's a matter of technique to master the volume.

  • I think she must of had 4 lungs! The world would be a much darker place without the German's beautiful music.

  • Beautiful!

  • wow hermosa voz!!!

  • Какой чудесный металлический голос! Последняя нота лучшая высокая нота, которую я когда-либо слышала. Как жаль, что сейчас совсем нет таких голосов!

  • Comment removed

  • What a wonderful metallic voice! The last note is the best high note I have ever heard. It is a pity that there are no such voices nowadays at all.

  • Райская птичка.

  • This is not altered, Erna is no fake. She is the greatest opera singer that there ever was or ever will be.

  • Having a high range does not make a person the greatest opera singer ever. there are many singer that are technically better than erna

  • @tenor220 You are SO right!!!!!!!!!

  • ok my doubt lays to rest.. i wanted to make sure that the fifth element recording was actually human made and not some lame studio. Hearing this woman do the same extraordinary voice just proves that it IS humanly possible. Unless of course this is was also altered.

  • The German Nightingale ... Brava !!!

  • All I know is she really could sing like this. She was also pretty damn fine.

  • this is so gooooood!!!

  • A lot of stuff on wikipedia is nonsenes. I saw an arrticle about rachelle ferrel and the person who posted it put the wrong actave range and cited a source that said the right thing which is very silly. wikipedia is full of what people think and assumptions.

  • now, dessay might not be able to sing so high but her voice is 100 times more beautiful and her high notes sound like a bird singing so she wins ^^

  • @killerbunny123123 I am going to go on a limb here and say that as high as this is, Dessay can sing highe in head and whistle register... but Dessay sings in modal voice in which she can already go very high. If she needed to, I bet she would cross over easily into full head voice and into whistle/super-head notes, to whatever height that Mado or Erna can go... but she apparently does not see the need to

  • @okebaram Yes....but whistle register is not allowed in opera singing.....however even if she could, today she surely cant anymore......but that's ok! There's MUCH MUCH more in opera than just high notes :)

  • @killerbunny123123 Erna and Mado Robin, as well as several other stratospherically high opera sopranos, sing their higher notes in a strong powerful virtually-connected whistle register, which some might prefer to call super-head, hence my comment below. Natalie's natural voice placement would give her a flexible, extensive, powerful head voice and "connected" whistle register, just like Mado, Erna, etc... but she always sings in her also-wide-ranged real passaggio voice.

  • @okebaram Yes, in those circumstances, you are right :) But as i said Dessay isnt able to sing notes above high E since 2003(....actually today her high Eb still sounds heavenly but you can clearly spot the high strain) therefore it is pointless to discuss of her high notes.

  • *The* most beautiful coloratura soprano voice - *ever*.

Barbara Bonney comes close, but no cigar.

  • GOSH ! I cannot believe that whislte or however is called from 0:12 to 0:16

Is she stilll alive or how old is she ?

    Thanks,

    gracias,

    Danke,

  • is whistle... the highest note in head voice is a d6. sung by mado robin and this is a F or G6

  • Comment removed

  • Strauss... i love him lol

  • I have an episode of the three stooges that has this song in English.

  • ima sumac es sin duda inalcamzable

  • Umm, impressing. it's such a big talent.

  • WHAT THE FUCK LOL how the hell can someone do that!?!?!?!? isnt that like whistling in your throat though? like mariah carey has

    amazing.

  • No, it's not whistle register. It's HEAD VOICE! :D

Mariah Carey uses whistle register for her higher notes, and G#7 was her highest whistled note so far, I guess.

  • that was definitely whistle voice at the start. It sounds different from head voice, which is 'thicker'.

  • Nope, this IS obviously HEAD VOICE! Just because you can't do it in head voice, doesn't mean no one else can't. Plus, one CAN'T sing Coloratura/staccato in whistle register. This girl was one of the best Coloratura Sopranos out there! Her singing range is unbelievable, just like Yma Sumac's (D2-Db7) and Ellen Beach Yaw's! :)

  • I'm a guy, but I can get into 'whistle voice' sometimes. You realise that these labels 'head, chest, whistle fry', just designate different contacts of the vocal cords--nothing physiologically magic happens. We're really arguing about nothing: you're just saying she sings with thicker cords at the very top of the register, I'm saying she must sing with very thin cords.

The only way to know for sure what 'register' she's using would be to examine her cords in slow motion.

  • Sometimes I use the same technique she used and I whistle too, so I know the difference between head voice and whistle register. Head voice has a very full and clear sound, and it is also very powerful, while the whistles are too weak and they cannot be heard without a mic. Whistle register also lacks flexibility, so it's impossible to whistle such a fast staccato! :)

  • Watch the Brett manning video on whistle voice. His whistle is very clear and sharp, and he doesn't call it head voice.

Perhaps you should upload a video with you singing in the very top register, and then you'll be able to demonstrate the difference bewteen head and whistle as you conceive of it.

  • Yeah, I have watched many Brett Manning videos; they helped me improve my whistle register. Still, REAL Coloratura Sopranos like Erna Sack never whistle because they can reach those notes with their head voice.

Sorry, I can't upload videos on YouTube cuz I don't have any recordings in MP3 format yet. All of them are in MTS format and they all exceed 100 MB. I only have a 10 seconds long sample of me singing an F6 in head voice.

  • ok, well when you do, let me know :)

  • Ok, I will try to convert my videos to MP3 and upload them on YouTube as soon as possible! :D

  • YMA SUMAC IS MORE BETTER

  • I adore her sound and personality - aer there cd's of her which aren't excessively filtered ?

  • I wouldn't mind getting into Erna's Sack!

Her voice is so extreme and erotic at the same time!

  • OMG :P

  • A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

  • This is a throwback to the 1930s. Everyone seemed to sing like that in those days. I wonder if her style would be different, if she was around now. I think so.

  • Wow, such high notes!

  • amazing voice!

  • Erna Sack, Yma Sumac, Ellen Beach Yaw & Mado Robin are the best sopranos ever! :-P

  • I also Love Lori Lewis!!!

do you think she´s an awesome soprano???

  • True! She is an amazing soprano but she doesn't sing opera/coloratura! They do have amazing voices but they belong to different genres! :D

  • Yeah!!Your completely right!!!

Both Lori Lewis and Erna sack are awesome singers!!!

  • Hey frozenmermaid666, i whatched a video of Ellen Beach Yaw, and i heard her making trills and i wonder if those are the same double trills that Yma Sumac did, do you know something about it? because it sounds very similar to the ones of Yma.

  • What video?

Ellen Beach Yaw, Erna Sack & Yma Sumac used head voice, not whistle register, but they probably had different vocal techniques! :D

  • i think it`s called "skylark".

  • Ahhhhhh, yeah! I know that song! She hits a D7 in head voice at the end! :D

  • nice, it was just amazing.

  • Yup, I know! High notes are the best! :)

  • wow, I thought her highest note was C7. didnt know she could go higher.

  • Erna Sack sings a C7 in this song ("Voices Of Spring") and Ellen Beach Yaw sings a D7 in "The Skylark"! They're both fantastic coloratura/opera sopranos! :D

  • @FrozenMermaid666 I'm sorry, but there's no C7 in this rendition. The highest note is a B6. And if I'm not mistaken, Mado Robin sang a D7 too, in a *live* performance in Vichy. Boy, what wouldn't I give to get those recordings!

  • @FrozenMermaid666 Don't forget Mado Robin!

  • Nessun agettivo non gli rende merito va oltre.

    Superlativa ma è troppo poco.

  • that voice is not human..

    lovely!

  • Registro? me refiero, a qué año pertenece esta grabación?

  • This is amazing.

  • WTF? WAS THAT REALLY A B FLAT? O.O

  • As I know, is the highest note she sings in the staccato passage at the beginning even a c''''

  • the first part is truly amazing.

  • and german

  • simply wonderful. Thank you!

  • hahahahah

    gente...

    my god!

    00:12

    uma flauta praticamente!

por isso sou fã da erna!^^

    e jhonnatanluiz...vc quase m mato de rir!hahahahah....U.U

  • Beautifully done! Kathryn Grayson also does this beautifully in "Andy Hardy's Private Secretary". :)

  • Curly also did this beautifully in "Micro Phonies"

  • That was a great episode of the Stooges....glorious.

  • The Three Stooges episode was the first exposure I had to this glorious piece! I must say Curly looked the part of an opera diva.

  • yes, love that version too!

  • Oh WOW!!! I love her. How daring. She's truly a gem.

  • parece minha irmã cantando no chuveiro, quebra ate os vidro da janela rsrsrsrrs!!!!!

  • if anyone have this as mp3 - pleease send it to me (:

  • Very nice. I think she outshines Miliza Korjus in this recording. Her voice has a lovely quality, a sort of warm tone and doesn't sound "screechy" or forced when singing the really high notes. Thank you for sharing.

  • OMG!! That's like TORTURE for me to get high notes like that. I take that back, I can't even hit an octave lower than that!! lol Wow, this is just amazing!! =O

  • Have you ever heard Yma Sumac?

  • No, I haven't.

  • You should in order to realize what a vocalist phenomenon is! Sorry for the red hand. I made click by mistake!

  • According to Sumac herself she sounded bad in opera...but I agree that she is a phenomenon.

  • Not to brag, but she's my great great (fill in greats here) grandmother.

  • you must be very talented and beautiful

  • BEAUTIFUL! --If not a little self indulgent on that last high note. But if I sounded like that, I would probably indulge as well. :P

  • Gosh ! there goes my vintage Crytal !

  • GOOD BREATH CONTROL

  • man, thats talent!

  • she's really fantastic. nice voice and wonderful technique

  • interesting thecnique... the color of voice is really beautyful! Really an expressive singer!!

  • amazing

  • Parece demais com Christina Aguileraaa

  • she looked like christina aguilera..

  • LOL Funny but true!

  • a gift received by you after hearing erna sack in the same song in german I accidently broke the large record played on record players of the era (early 1950). To hear that never forgotten pure song&voice I am elated to find my recollection of her voice...exactly...so that I am back in my aunt's music room 'l'air penaude'no doubt...today I dance with Erna's good influence in freedom to BE.

  • a freak of nature

  • Excuse me ?

  • Incredible !! She is amazing !!!

  • The most unique singer I've heard. I'd forgotten about her

until I found her surfing YouTube. Brings back memories.

Thank you so muuch for postig this.

  • I had a 10 inch LP record "The European Nightingale" many years ago and loaned it to somebody to copy it onto tape for me. I never got it back. Her Furnicili furnicular was incredible

  • I'd like to trade the extra u in muuch for an n in postig. I

    need a proof reader.

  • I also liked it when The Three Stooges did this. Thanks

  • Right, she reaches all those high notes in a seemingly effortless way. But I don't think her coloratura is that great, at least in this recording. The end is freakish.

  • her coloratura is sloppy and her scooping is not very appealing. Her last note sounds so uncontrolled and why does she hold it for so long? give me a break.

  • The Waltz "Frühlingsstimmen" (Voice of Spring") was created by Johann Strauss the Younger (Johann Strauss II, 1825-1899) for a coloratura sopran in the 1880's, named Bianca Bianchi. He had this waltz written with many creativeness for famous voice interpreters and the compositor's piano version of this waltz is dedicated to the famous piano artist Alfred Gruenfeld. His piano version from 1913 was also preserved and had many paraphrases not written by the compositor.

  • cause she could.

she enjoyed herself und us with that, btw

mado robin could same same and did.

    so what

  • what's your comment then? you sophist!!!

  • MAravillosa... Jamas escuché agudos como los suyos!! BRavo!!

  • deverias escuchar a yma sumac su voz abarca todos los registros vocales hasta 5/8 :)

  • Those high staccati at the beginning are quite amazing, and really make the song. There are better recordings, such as those of Ivogun and Tetrazzini, but none higher!

  • @meltzerboy Korjus and Dessay are also better in this piece.

  • Insane high notes.......wow

  • ¡fabulosa!imposible!!!

  • where can i can get this waltz

  • I don't know where to get this exact recording, but it is the Frühlinstimmerwaltzer by Richard Strauss.

  • It's the Frühlingsstimmenwalzer by Johann Strauss II, op. 410. The original is a "Telefunken"-gramophon disk of ca. 1936, Erna Sack from the state opera of Dresden with the orchestra of the Reichsoper Berlin, conducted by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt. Richard Strauss is not the same like Johann Strauss.

  • Definitely one of the best coloraturas:)

  • Beautiful. One of my favourite sopranos. Thank you
