O I feel so sorry for Sumi here!!, yeah it's human nature to forget things, like words to a song & I'm sure it's happened to great opera singers. I heard it happened to Montserrat Caballe during multiple incidents, but it's so shameful and pathetic to see Sumi an otherwise skillful technician of this type of coloratura soprano music, fail miserably. "how can wordly things take advantage of me ? how can they..take advantage of me ? LOL LOL
A very disappointing performance from Sumi Jo. There's no excuse for forgetting her words, most of the queens in the audience knew them all. Her top notes are also a bit shrill to say the least. And as for the band.... what on earth is the oboist on?
We need to concern that Su Mi Cho is a opera singer while Chenoweth is a musical singer. They are in a similar, but different field of the performance still.
This is a performing art, and people have different taste. This song illustrates the complicated heart of Cunegonde. Cunegonde lost her identity, and seeks comforts from jewelry. Su Mi Cho sang in a very classical way, while Chenoweth sang in a very expressive, bright way. Art is not something that we can say 'correct' or 'wrong'. One can say I like one over the other, but both singers are super talented and professional enough to create their own styles.
Has anyone heard/seen Erie Mills in the New York City Opera production in the 80's? That was a stunning performance, both vocally and theatrically! She displayed impeccable high notes with the bravura of a true opera singer, while involved in some extremely funny stage business including hopping on one leg while flinging out high E flats!
June Anderson sings this a heck of a lot better than she does. And please before another sumi jo fan decides to run and block me like a big cry baby, learn how to play hard ball with the big boys and girls and take criticism weather good or bad.
It's an operetta, and I think that gives Kristin Chenoweth more freedom to make it a mixture of opera and musical theatre for her own performance. I love Kristin, and I think she was great at acting out Cunegonde, and she DOES have a nice voice, even with opera. I've never heard her do a full song operatically, but I'm sure she can.
Chenoweth is the only one who actually sounds interesting or like human being singing this. It's sooo boring when not performed as Cunegonde. The Cunegonde I fell in love with in the book would not stand in one place and sing. People seem to forget that the song is ridiculous, the lyrics are pretty much all jokes, and Cunegonde was a babe! She was coveted by armies, , pretty much every guy she charmed the pants off of, and is the reason Candide even begins or continues his adventures.
Chenoweth and Sumi Jo can't even be put in the same catagory.
Chenoweth made Candide not even an opera, but musical theater. Sumi Jo is so much superior I can't even believe I have to defend her against Chenoweth. IF you prefer Kristen, you know nothing about opera, and would be better off seeing Wicked.
and who are you to say if we preffer Kristen we know nothing about opera? and as you said, this is not an opera and if you knew something more you will notice that Sumi Jo has an excellent technique. Shes a machine but shes cold as an iceberg. This is supposed to be comical not a show-off competition. In this aria Kristin and Dessay are the best. So yeah, we cannot put Sumi Jo in the same category as Chenoweth. But on this we do can. And Sumi Jo is way down, at least on this aria.
I agree that her ability as an opera singer is superior to chenoweth but she doesn't have anything on cheno when it comes to performance. Cheno is 4'11" and makes it seem like she's a hundred feet tall.
What was that oboist smoking? As for Sumi Jo, I think the newer version on the site of her singing this in Seoul was a bit better. However, I do much prefer Kristin Chenoweth's version because she gets the comedic part. Remember that although Krisitin is not a professional opera singer she could have been: she turned down a full scholarship to the Academy of Vocal Arts but turned the scholarship to take a part off Broadway.
I thought it sounded funny too. I think the oboist just accidentally flated one note, but sumi jo knows her shit, and she went with it like it was nothing. I would have been so thrown off.
it's true sumi jo has a prettier tone (she's a full-time professional opera singer, afterall), but no one comes close to cheno in the characterization of this song...as the incredibly talented comedic actress that she is, cheno OWNS this song.
This video was nice to watch and Sumi Jo is a wonderful artist; however, she totally forgot the words during the middle slow section...i guess even the best have their moments. That's perfectly fine though, I still enjoyed this performance of a very difficult aria.
<3 her. didn't notice the mistake at first lmao

Su Mi Cho sings it in a very classical way (in this case hers is not drama...) but Kristen's is more dramatic. That's all.
sparkling0D 3 years ago
No, not more dramatic... more acted. This song is a coloratura soprano aria. A non classical singer CANNOT sing this.
