I say Happy Holiday because I have friends and family of several faiths. Not all of them celebrate Christmas. Plus there are several holidays in November and December...Christmas, Kwanzaa, Solstice, Thanksgiving, New Year's, Chanukah, even Samhain, it covers them all without missing any.

The pilgrims who founded the country believed that it was satanic to celebrate Christmas with gifts or make it an outward celebration. The strange part is that Fox News is always bashing Europe about it's lack of 'Christianity' nowadays, yet in the UK we nearly always use Merry Christmas! Also, the festival of Sol Invictus was held around the same time in many parts of Rome. Some Jewish sects also believed that prophets died around date of conception, so 9 months after the end of March would be the end of December. It just happened to work out. It was by no means "random."

This is hilarious. Christmas, the 25th of December, is a day that has been celebrated around the world for thousands of years. But, wait for this, NOT as the birthday of Jesus. The Roman Catholic Church set the date of Jesus's birthday for the 25th because there were so many pagan celebrations on that day and it would make the deal to convert a little sweeter if you could keep all the traditions as long as you did them in the name of Jesus. AND the United States didn't want it in the beginning.

The pilgrims who founded the country believed that it was satanic to celebrate Christmas with gifts or make it an outward celebration. I used to be Christian...but I remember as a kid in the 70s "Happy Holidays" covered Christmas AND New Years. Especially for the school yard when you knew you wouldn't see some till after the New Years.
I knew of NO open atheists back them. We had plenty of Jewish people in our town. I assume "Happy Holidays" also gave well wishes to them...or well wishes if you didn't know their religion.

The war on Christmas is very real, Every year the atheists make this clear. Putting up their atheist billboards and counter nativities, screaming about how Christmas and Christmas decorations violate the First Amendment. Atheists want Christmas destroyed and the American Atheists make this intention clear right on their website, complete with insinuations that lack what they claim to base their belief on - evidence.

@ChristianMission the yule tide predates "christmas" entirely, and speaking as an atheist I can tell you that the secular christmas will NEVER die, thankfully. My children enjoy christmas a lot, as well they should; snowmen, trees, lights, presents - all good things. I'm happy that charity and the winter solstice aren't religious inventions! I reckon atheists are just upset about the appropriation of their rituals for religious use.

@machinate There is no secular Christmas. If you don't celebrate Christmas as Jesus' birthday, then you aren't celebrating Christmas. You can celebrate the winter solstice, exchange presents or whatever else you want but that's not Christmas.

@narutardtedr It is not random. It was appropriated from the Pagan winter solstice festival.
Also, the festival of Sol Invictus was held around the same time in many parts of Rome. Some Jewish sects also believed that prophets died around date of conception, so 9 months after the end of March would be the end of December. It just happened to work out. It was by no means "random."
However, you're right, it had nothing to do with Jesus' actual DOB.

This is hilarious. Christmas, the 25th of December, is a day that has been celebrated around the world for thousands of years. But, wait for this, NOT as the birthday of Jesus. The Roman Catholic Church set the date of Jesus's birthday for the 25th because there were so many pagan celebrations on that day and it would make the deal to convert a little sweeter if you could keep all the traditions as long as you did them in the name of Jesus. AND the United States didn't want it in the beginning.

O' Reilly is saying people should be thankful for Christmas as it provides a boost to the economy and a period off work. If Christmas makes you so angry, don't celebrate it, but also don't be angry at those who do.
The origins of Christmas are numerous as it is an amalgamation of several traditions and cultures. Is this any reason not to celebrate it? No. You need a better argument and I don't see any reason you could use to expostulate against Christmas.
