One thing very cool about Bobby D: I have heard over a dozen live performances of "Mack the Knife" and he never sings it the same way...he always changes it up ... the best swing singer/performer of all time!!
@TheChivalricAge i found it on her and was able to downloaded it befor that person's account went under so i put it back on as it one of the best versions of mack going
@TheChivalricAge, Thank you so very much for posting this as Bobby always seemed to have so much fun when he did these songs. No matter what the nay-sayers post this man was always excellent at what he did, and tried to draw the audience in to make them feel right at home. You really don't find singing like his too much any more.
Wayne Newton would have been 25 in 1967 when this was filmed. Darin was a big supporter of Newton when Wayne was starting out. In Newton's biography he refers to Bobby as like a big brother to him.
Being a liberal doesnt automatically qualify Darin, (or anyone else) as "Savvy".......it was all "fashion" after about '67 and Darin had been irrelevant, commercially for years, and he signed on. He made a fool of himself with his Hip-trip shtick, bombed in Vegas.. finally made a rebound in 71 72.......he went back to doing what he was best at.....singing his hits, working the crowds with his comedy, and mimic routines........he was a brilliant talent, and no telling what he would do today!
Time for a whole new "Darin Invasion". boomac62, you are right on. He marched in the Civil Rights marches in the south. He campaigned for RFK and was completely devastated when he died. You MUST see his performance in Pressure Point with Poitier. Poitier loved Darin, even though he played a Nazi racist in that role. You can find it on youtube. I get really ticked when all I see is Sinatra CDs in the stores. That needs to change. The man was politcially savvy.

Darin, in his brief heyday from about 1959 to about 1964, was the unparalelled live perfomrer, and the most electric stage entertainer, including Sammy Davis, Sinatra, etc. of all time. Even Sammy Davis admitted tht Bobby Darin ws the only singer he'd never follow on stage.....that sasy it all. Bobby threw away his perch atop that industry when America changed, and he went politically far-left..which cancelled his appeal with his core people. Wish he lived a bit longer....
His shifting to a folk sound was just him climbing out of the box others had put him in.(not the first time either) Had he lived longer there is no telling how many other "boxes" he would be put in only to climb out. I love his politically flavored music but he could sing any style and he would put his own stamp on it. A Genius. (and his politics were right on)
Love me some Bobby Darin. Never gets old.

Great performance, lousy video. Best Darin "Mack" I've seen.

Darin gave Newton "Dankeshoen".
Darin was supposed to do it, but
wanted to produce it for Newton.

Is there anyone who can give us Jack Jones' version? Jack & Bobby are greats in my list - I just wonder how Jack did it.
minocentaur 2 years ago
Never heard a Jones version, and have listened to
a lot of Jack. Wonder if he ever did it! Wonderful
singer, let the song be the star unlike all the young
singers today, stretching out every syllable 9
different ways.
