The kid with the glasses is not a girl, it's a boy. The rubiks cube symbolizes him struggling with his emotions over the loss of his friend. Notice when he puts it in the container it's solved, meaning he's come to terms with his loss. Then he throws it up into the vending machine, meaning he'll always remember his friend (keeping forever the memories they shared). It also symbolizes the loss of Geri and how the girls will always remember her as well.
