Absolutely gorgeous Mr. Snitzler. This is Joel Hansen. You taught me about five years ago for some time at GMU. I just saw this when I was searching for Manzanares De Real and was happy to have stumbled into this video. Your tone is incredible and your feel for these pieces is an inspiration.
Thank you Joel. I'm really happy you enjoyed my performance. Stay tuned: I'll be putting up some other videos where I am playing with Rick Whitehead. Contact me to tell me what you're up to these days.
Thanks, Keto6789! I'm glad you liked my my performance. I suspect there may be more than one way to play these pieces, but it reminds of what the great French flutist, Jean-Pierre Rampal said: "When you go out to play you must be convinced that your's is the only interpretation possible!" Check back when you get the chance: I'll be posting some more videos during the summer.
Thanks, Rob. Keep working at those pieces and you'll play them better than you think. And, congratulations on your acceptance to Oxford! Hoist a pint from me to you, the next chance you get.
These are two pieces from a set entitled,"Castillos de España", (Castles of Spain). The various pieces demonstrate all the charm of both their source of inspiration and of their composer, Federico Moreno-Torroba.
Andrew, I inadvertantly zapped your first comment, which was very complimentary. Thank you! I do remember you're asking about beginning phrases on the upbeat, (anacrusis). Over the years, I have come to be in complete agreement with the opinion of one of my teachers, Nadia Boulanger, that the vast majority of phrases and note groups begin on the upbeat. As for the way I "placed my hand on the guitar afterwards"... I have no memory of what I did. I'll have to take a look at the video again.
Here's what you said: "Beautiful. A world of meaning in each note.Beginning those phrases on offbeats?? ;-)Andrew."
Thank you for your kind words. As for phrasing, see my comments re: Nadia Boulanger. So, I looked at the video to see what you were referring to and, it's true! At the end of Manzanares, I place my hand on the guitar just as I remember Segovia doing. But I doubt it is unconcious imitation; it just seems the natural thing to do. I'll bet you do the same thing!

I also love the way you place your hand on the guitar afterwards... The maestro would be proud!
