I play guitar too, and I really like guitar hero because it's fun to play with friends, and it's a lot easier to find friends you can play guitar hero with than ones you can jam with on real instruments, although the latter is more satisfying to me when I can manage it. It's not worth it getting all bent out of shape about how guitar hero is nothing like real guitar and it's deluding today's youth with instant short term gratification; videogames have been doing that for years.
But more importantly, even though music is the common thread, the two are so fundamentally different that comparing them is like comparing oranges and grapefruit: they each require a very different approach to reach their similar juicy hidden goodness, each satisfying in a different way, and both can be quite challenging (except mandarins, but that's like eating a navel orange on very easy difficulty).
Guitar hero definitely isn't the death of musicianship (chalk that one up to Top 40 and MTV), in fact it may fill a similar role that bands like the Beatles, Zeppelin and Hendrix did years ago: make aspiring musicians want to pick up the guitar and maybe some of them end up becoming professional musicians. And the ones that are all cocky and think that being good at guitar hero translates to the real thing will buy tracks on XBL by these new musicians. As it has always been and shall ever be.
