  • where can i get a copy of the 'Hero' skit?

  • 19 people are category A

  • I'm sure John Green and him were separated at birth

  • we meet again 240p :D

  • @sackwhacker lol yeah! Why though? Isn't there a higher quality source video that can be encoded to replace this?

  • best lecturer I have ever had in my 4 years of University education

  • lol there so many Asians

  • @newbegining009 asian the biggest continent in the world that why.

  • @footballfan8000

Oh, and just how did you come to that conclusion? Ass. As for the other guys, I'm not sure if you guys attended Uni but cooperating on assignments is no big deal. Throwing someone out of school for such a minor thing is, I think, extreme. But making educational videos like this is a very great thing and perhaps I made too harsh a statement.

  • @KraussHelmut

He is giving a perfectly reasonable WARNING. He has every right to report someone if they cheat. You aren't supposed to. It's wrong. He is a very nice guy, it seems, and he seems very helpful. He's just doing his job. Get over yourself.

  • @KraussHelmut : He threatens to ruin their lives? You really believe it is his fault if they are caught cheating? That's like saying the police ruin peoples live when they throw them in jail for murder or stealing. It is the person committing the crime (including academically) that is ruining their own lives, not the other way around.

  • @KraussHelmut You're ruining your own life, and that's what he is threatening you with.

  • i'm a C guy lol

  • #faints

  • raaaaaaaw, gonna get rich, rich, rich! =D xD...little boxes made of ticky-tacky ;)

  • @littlesometin Is that a Doctor Who referrence?

  • Loved the Lecture, 6 more years and i get something like this!!!! (8th grade)

  • @TDMedia89 May working hard now on it , would open better chances for you after those 6 years ^_^

  • Nice. Just a little bit mroe of quality would be great :)

  • 19 lady gagas watched the video and disliked

  • COOL I like him too, but so weird that some people disliked this tube whereas the content is amazing!

  • Richard Buckland is a great professor of UNSWeareing.

  • Can somebody post the URL to the webpage used by the teacher?

  • wat was d name of d book he mentioned?plz tel me i need it............

  • @IlovAllah1

Programming, problem solving and abstraction by Alex Moffat

  • What I would give to have learned in that class.

  • very good teacher.

tries to understand student's fears and anxieties.

  • Cool guy. Wish I'd had him as a Teach.

    kudos !

  • "cheap and crappy is good"

    -Richard Buckland

  • @MustNotRead You're a joke and a troll. I hope you watch these videos. He will make you a better person.

  • Lecture starts at 31:24 where he names the book for the course. But really this lecture is just for the kids & admin stuff, better skip to Lec 2.

  • 1:01 Hi my name is Charlie and I'm an alcoholic...

  • Blah blah blah...for i in all_professors kiss_my_ass(i)

  • i learn programming, and i hate programming, but i need programming, so thx to this vid, i slightly know hwo to change myself to become a programming student.

  • Someone has to put up the intermission video about plagiarism

  • @phektus its called HERO under unsw cse revue

  • Richard is being stood down by UNSW for striking. SMH: Staff stood down in University dispute

If you would like to show support for him please write to UNSW or join the facebook group Students supporting Richard Buckland

I am one of his students for COMP1927 and 2911 (I'm the guy in the blue jacket in the first 1927 video) and we could lose him as a lecturer :(

  • @footballfan8000

i'm not supporting him. he lacks discipline and needs to learn the hard way. maybe he'll think twice before going against the system next time!!

  • @footballfan8000 In fact, his teaching style is better than boring style. I would rather read a book if a teacher is boring. Richard gained attention of students. Successful! How is him doing now?

  • @footballfan8000 what is the name of the facebook group

  • heahe @ 03:10 we can see a nice cat Wallpaper :D YAY

  • This guy is awesome, I think that I am going to go there... Only if he still teaches.

  • 5:46 He says "Just being a Dick" LOL ;-)

  • can you tell me the home page, please? i don't understand it... sorry

  • What a great teacher! Awesome sense of humor and great at communicating the benefits of the field. Liked the ABC categorization of students to dispel fears beforehand. Major takeaway: Expect things to go wrong again and again so cramming is not an option and you must persevere - this is about problem solving and stretching your mind. Looking forward to the rest of the lectures.

  • LOL 1:25

    Asian guy on the left

  • class starts at 5:50

  • damn good lecture

anyone know where can i get the video clip at the end of this lecture

  • LOL 3:08 "I'M I UR LECTUREZ STEALIN UR LURNINZ" That, my good sir, is an epic desktop win.

  • @DeadlyCyanide Haha, the end part is really funny. l33t xD

  • Now im 14, i understand almost everything they talk about in all these lectures. I may not know that much C or C++ for that matter, but im a damn good programmer for my age. Anyone who has a passion should follow it, no matter how old they are, ethnicity or background. Im regarded as a "mosher" or an "emo", whatever word gets thrown around. Doesnt knock me off track, i keep on doing what i do best. Programming.

  • @Samzsite

Why does it say you're 30 on your profile?

  • @logicCplusplus I never put my real DOB on anything online ^_^

  • @Samzsite

Send me your birth certificate, as for me, I'm 5 years old, prove me otherwise.

  • He's so passionate. I think I could learn most subjects with a teacher that enthusiastic.. or at least have a good go at it !

  • Thanks to reddit for introducing me to mr. Buckland. The world needs more of this kind of heart

  • @de3a10 yes it is. Do you not understand what coding means? It doesn't mean encoding, it means writing functions and classes and scripts, which is programming.

  • ashoomed

  • i cant wait to go to university

  • Yep, this guy singularly responsible for making switch degrees and pursue a job in programing. That was over 10 years ago now.

You will never find a better professor!!

  • Programming is not about coding.

  • I like how one of the programming students is already hard at work editing a lolcat or some kind of kitteh 2:55

  • Wow. I know no professor who comes even close to this guy.

  • this is lecture 1, are they all here , I mean lecture 1 to...32.

  • Hey erm i want to do further computing in the future. .love to go uni and do Computing Systems/Electronic engineering etc any advice???

btw im 15 . .maths isnt might strong point but im good at ICT and science

    any useful advice:)

  • @Bunfire123 Hey dude, maths is fairly key in computing, as alot of code structure revolves around algorithms. I'm currently a compsci undergrad and maths isn't a strong point for me, but I'm deff coping =) i believe elec eng is fairly mathematical though. dw, maths is fun when you get into it =D

  • @Skripster .. oh thanks :)

Good luck with your computer science!

  • @Bunfire123 EE requires quite the handle on Physics, which in turn requires a handle on heavier Mathematics. However, if you're able to excel in your science classes you should be able to handle anything that is thrown at you. Just gotta work for it. Comp Sci is, just as Skrip stated, a lot of math.

  • @Hitzification

    Thank you very much.

  • @Bunfire123 Maths. Maths maths maths. Also start learning languages. It takes roughly ten years practicing regularly and effectively to get good so start ASAP. Let your lecturers at Uni handle the rest.

  • @Bunfire123 Starting with math is a really good idea -- in particular math called "discrete math" or "combinatorics". Since you're pretty young I recommend you start off by buying the Art of Problem Solving books (google it) and participate in some math competitions. If you feel AoPS is too hard of a series, then I recommend reading Algebra by Gelfand (the intro seems easy but it really works the foundations rigorously). Besides that look up "Project Euler" and look into cs competitions.

  • @ambigera

    Thank you very much.

  • biomed....

for ur infomation... biomedical theatre is 1km away from this place(i think this is rex vowels theatre)

  • this guy is a good lecturer

  • 12:00 to 12:59 It's called Flash of Genius matey ;)

  • This guy is naturally inspiring

  • 36:38 The warning against repetitive strain injury. I emailed Richard Buckland today and got an auto-reply message saying that he is suffering from RSI and can't respond to email. So be warned! Hope RB gets well soon.

  • Really?

    Woah

  • Can we use the url he mentioned here? I just tried but it did not worked...

  • Programming and writing code is SO THUG. I just love how like when you get stuff right its just like, instant gratification, and sometimes it will be just one after another until you're just awesome-gasming in your chair about how cool you are. :D

  • I wanna program in machine code!

  • lol...i recommend u master C programming, followed by assembler b4 even thinking about it..

  • wow! i wanna be in university if this is what their teachin u! ill definetly do computin.

  • me 2! ^_^

  • perhaps some english as well.

  • Thank you so much for this video ^_^

  • People call me a geek all the time. Why? Because I enjoy writing code, and I think mathematics is beautiful.

There is a definitely a sexy elegance behind a well structured equation. Will other people understand that? Hell no. Do I expect them to? Hell no. I'm not a computer science major because I want to get rich. I'm a CS major because it is my passion.

  • Amen. I LOVE the feeling I get when I solve a problem in my sleep at 2 in the morning, go out to my computer, slam down some code, and bask the glowing screen in the dark room in wonder, and not being able to sleep after.

  • @GaseousAnomaly001 : And corporate america loves that feeling... and they will rape you and enslave you. Charge 5 times more than you think you are worth.

  • @GaseousAnomaly001 I did that last week. I was laying in bed thinking about how to solve the problem with my Java classes. At about 1:30 I said "I'm such and idiot, I just need to put the class in here." After I put it in I ran the program like 50 times because I spent like 5 hours trying to figure it out.

  • Turns to dread when you wake up thinking you know how to solve a problem, type it out without a dry run and everything fails on the first run. Usualy with the most simple things as well. It's like people say the simplest things are often the most complicated.

  • You sir, put my thoughts into words.

  • Comment removed

  • be like richard..his personality is powerful..

  • true

  • @Islandfad apparently my friends tell me i have no life because fun for me consists of writing code. haha, i love it

  • @Islandfad First comment I spent the time to thumbs up =)

  • @Islandfad hawt.

  • @Islandfad Sorry to break it to you, you will not be getting rich from computer science.

  • @andrei644 I think you may be mistaken.

  • @andrei644 That is where you are incredibly incorrect! The filed of nursing and computer science etc etc is growing rapidly. As technology expands, jobs opportunities will as well.

  • @andrei644 Not only are you wrong, but you also misunderstood his statement. He meant he likes CS because it's his passion, NOT because he wants to get rich from it.

  • @Islandfad Sounds like you need to move to a better city. "Geeks" have a pretty solid community here in portland. The more "geeks" there are, the harder it is to dismiss their culture. Plus development is a pretty big business in this area, so some legitimacy is established there as well.

I dunno, me personally, I just don't "look" like a geek. You would likely never assume I'm a dev by looking at me. Works pretty well.

Aside from that, $%&# what ppl say, you got a passion. All that matters.

  • @Islandfad I am a new student,can I ask you some questions?

  • @Islandfad Same, But it is nice to think , man, one day my passion could make me rich XD

  • @Islandfad

I agree with you. Math is all around us. It is the God's creation....everything else is human's.Because, it is perfect science, many of people dislike it......but when you realize the sense of math,it is very simple to do with.

Sorry for grammatic mistakes. English is not my native language

Drazen L, student of Faculty of Information Technologies of SlobomirP University, Doboj, Bosnia.

My wish is to meet profesor Buckland, because, HE is the Profesor unlike others. Respect!!!.:-))

  • @Islandfad I could see your comment ending with "However, I'm getting my Ph.D to get rich."

  • @Islandfad Cool story bro where you get it from?

  • @Islandfad Even though I have never felt sexual attractions to mathematical equations, I am completely passionate about computer science and programming, it is my hobby and my life.

  • d: ǝʞoɾ slooɟ lıɹdɐ ǝɔıu lol

  • haha, i hope they put other subjects i'm interested in online

  • no shit sherlock

  • Hey, I'm pretty sure everyone in that room will be making more than you in 4 years.

  • Want a cookie?

  • Yeah, and we'll also be your boss.

You know those rich CEO's? They got their because they are, in your words, geeks, but in my words they are smarter than you.

  • When I saw the title I thought this has to be a joke, but its true youtube has become a bandwidth library for uni's and techs, my god its all over now.

  • this guy mentions a book by Alastair Moffat.. who actually teaches at melb uni. i once had a subject with him as the lecturer, pretty cool guy.

  • I was in this course! I miss it so much...

  • lol

  • Comment removed

  • Can't you read? It's about Higher Computing, goggle it...sheesh.

  • "Plagiarize, and we'll beat the living s&*t out of you."

    lol

  • wow. Richard Buckland is still teaching at UNSW. He was my favourite lecturer back in 2000 - he always put so much effort to make the lecture interesting and easy to understand.

  • i want to do Computing now!!!

  • You are doing computing now!!!

  • he is a good lecturer :) though haskell was ... :P

  • sheeeeeeez, little bit of editing wouldnt hurt.

  • This guy is a good lecturer :]

  • why is this spotlighted lol, even though I do computer science at uni I wouldn't imagine this is very appealing to a mass audience...

  • My feelings exactly.

I'm really glad they highlighted it, cause I doing a computing course. But, doesn't work for most people.

    Thanks for the spotlight anyway.

  • This guy is a good lecturer :]

  • Ahahah.

    You're pathetic.

  • Lol anger issues ^_^

  • Google is a small part of a larger process of globalisation which changes the world.

  • Guys the video starts at 46:00 . vilain is actually a professor

  • Read the Q and A of youtube.

  • then why did you click on this video

    the title looked pretty boring

so why are you on this page

  • oh wow you have used that same choices of words three times

    well your very creative

ouch you no that really hurt (sarcasm noted)

you really think some guy over the internet thats swearing at me is gonna effect me(sarcasm noted)

    this is so pathetic

  • why can't he just go up and get the students from biomed? That's what I would have done

  • i gotta disagree when he says friendships are made in the first lecture... no, its tutorials/group assessment where u meet ppl n make friends. then u might sit with them at lectures later or just sit whereever as it doesnt really matter, u just listening to lecture mostly

  • I went up to a biomed video by accident and had to come back down to watch this video.

  • holy shit i didnt even know u could have a youtube vid this long lol

  • I love being able to see lectures like this on YouTube. It's a shame that these sort of things aren't recorded on a much larger scale and sent out to distance study people like myself! Seeing and listening is much easier than just reading. Richard - please tell Dr Mike Ryan to record and YouTube his ZITE7203 classes!! lol

  • interesting, funny..like draaaging you to the course...enjoy!

  • why? ur remark is meaingless and if not conceited if you dont have any reasons to back up ur statement

  • He does seem like one of the almost non-existent humble lecturers but I don't understand why these videos are so popular.

  • this brings back uni memories.. from a few years back mind you. i feel like im there lol

  • the plagirism video is at 46:30 if anyone wants to see it, its hilarious

  • I'm one of the category C people who can't afford to sit in normally... thanks for this series ^.^

    subscriberUint++

  • exactly

  • deersdrinkbeer i agree he seems really nice

  • my English professor did me dirty , out of a 6 page report i wrote , i forgot to give credit to one of the sentence i copy from the internet , i didn't mean to leave out the credit to the website i got the information. so i was accused of plagiarism.

the report was kinda rushed but i gave alot of credits on the back page but i forgot one little sentence . you guys think he is wrong for doing that ?? i talked to him and he said i cant do nothing about !!

  • Comment removed

  • when he says talk to people, i would of stood up.

said... Hi all i am ....., nice to meet you all.. easy as that, 3 years evry1 will know u perfectly. :P:P

  • I would disagree, I think he's a much better person than you will ever be

  • Oh fuck off. This guy is very interesting compared to others. Even then, he's a pretty colorful fun guy.

  • all i have learned in years of college to this day has been what i have taught myself; college has taught me nothing other than the fact it is an overly-bureaucraticly controlled waste of time and my coursework in high school was harder.... neither of which did i ever have to study for.

public education system = epic fail.

oh, need specific examples? message me. i just can't do it in 500 strokes....

  • True.

  • Hm, that's pretty awesome he's putting them on youtube.

  • yeah now we can enjoy there same education they paid thousands for for free
