When that knee comes crashing into your face, I'm pretty sure toes up or toes down it's going to hurt like hell. Good techniqueis one thing, but don't be a typical YouTube Karate twerp obsessing over whether a guy's toe is pointed 10 degrees too much to the left or right.
I am a 3rd Dan Kyokushin and I do Kiza (are you sure you spell that Hiza?) geri with toes down, but I really think that in kumite anyone should be allowed to do what they feel most confident with. In katas, however, it's a different matter....
This video has been created by a 3rd Dan black belt and chairman of Seidokaikan Karate for all of Europe, he has trained with both the founders of Oyama and Seidokaikan Karate in Japan for many years. I asked him for his comments and he replied:
Hiza Geri is done with toes both up and down. Pulling the toes upwards strengthens the muscles surrounding the shin and makes the Hiza Geri more powerful. So give it a try, act first, analyze later.
