@Tischtenniscrack95 You're right, but Zhang Jike didn't make it easy for him. ZJK stepped up his power and spin and you could tell Suss was getting a bit worried because he started realizing that the attacks were getting stronger by the point.
I think the germans made a mistake playing suss here. his style is very well suited to the controlled counter looping style of the europeans, but he has a very poor track record against asian countries. Patrick baum, who took ma long the full seven games at the energis masters, would have been a better selection, as he is faster and better suited to playing the chinese with their lightning fast speed. respects to Suss though. im sure he could kick my ass
I am glad Zhang won this match. He is the only inexperienced Chinese youth in this tournament (in both men and women) who actually won a match in this tense final. Ma Long, Liu Shiwen, and Ding Ning all lost their matches they've played in this final only because they weren't prepared for this type of final where all Chinese fans have expectations on them.
@srivatsavt . i was in china when this happened and they commented on how the women needed to prove themselves now that Zhang Yi Ning and Wang Nan, the two leading chinese women before, was retired. they were completely right.
but give those guys a couple of years. in all fairness, both Zhang and Wang retired at about age 30. ma lin, who won 2 of three matches for china, is 30. Guo Yan, who won the only match for china in the women, is 27. Think about that.
@Compantino I'm not saying that his skills are bad. I'm saying that his killer spirit is lacking. He doesn't have the "I'm going to rip off your head" eyes.
Zhang Jike is still developing. But to be honest, I see limitations in him. He plays like Wang Liqin, basic, solid, concrete performance, but he is not as powerful. Now everyone lives with this glue ban, I don't think he will reach the level of Ma Long and Xu Xin. This game shows how iffy he could be, but I think its because of his underdevelopment. but overall, he is not champion material to me.
@bartek4443 Zhang Jike has a very hard time beating Wang Hao and Wang Liqin. He is not the best. He is never ranked within top 3 in China. However, he can beat Ma Lin easily because his strong points are played to Ma Lin's weaknesses.
@Fakeslimshady excellent observation, i just saw his latest game against xu xin and he did just what you said. your point is something he has been developing and is becoming his specialty skill. adaptation is something really hard to do in fact, but Zhang really has a knack of it.
You are absolutely right. It is no coincidence that these exact players represent China on international level. They are picked among millions of players and they are almost flawless. Many people say that the Chinese are winning because of great technique, speed, service and etc.. They are also right, but I believe they are so dominate because of their strong mentality.. Mentality is unbelievably underrated in sports amongst the public viewers.
@Fakeslimshady Actually the entire Chinese team studies their opponents. The Chinese system has broken down just about every player's game and they study tactics and techniques to attack the weaknesses of other players. They unlike the rest of the world except maybe Japan have broken this sport down to the science and it shows.
Zhang Jike comes through under pressure like he always does. That's how he defeated Ma Long and Xu Xin during the Chinese Trials, and that's how he took three games straight off Suss after the first set. He doesn't lose his cool or confidence like Suss usually does in matches. It is fair to say, however, that Suss outperformed my expectations of him
zhing jike and xu xin in the past have never had that death focus like ma lin or ma long. but in this game, i think he is starting to develop it, mostly as a function of being able to be in more tournaments. xu xin on the other hand is just a pansy.
Wow! Suss is really improving. I am not saying the odds are great, but if Suss, Dima and Timo are on... they can definitely be a threat to China. Hopefully they continue to grow over the next two years.
Suss learned in the hard way, that the only way to beat a chinese is to attack first, and even if you got that, you have to keep on and getting the ball in, everything else are delusions.
Christian Süß had a good chance to win the match. I was astonished by his early lead of 5 - 0 points!
