is this a home demo or a studio demo? i'm curious bc of the amount of tape bleed (i.e. the effect that sounds like a slightly delayed double tracking)
I understand that the Maharishni was the origin or inspiration for the song, but there's nothing about him in the actual lyrics! The contrast between the song's origin and the actual song are GENIUS, and notta ONE comment about that!! Figured I'd be the first.
@muymalmoon. Actually John was not skeptical about the Maharishi. In an interview with the other three, Paul made the statement that John would get up before anyone to speak with him. He wanted to see if the Maharishi would..."Give him the answer". Which is just like him.=]
@QVrat123 John had issues with plenty of Paul's songs. If you listen to the White Album its really sort of disjointed. You can tell that the collaboration is really low. It was not uncommon for Paul to play most of the instruments on his songs during this time.
Definitely NOT from any of the 3 Anthology albums I have. It's John's home demo version, but the cleaned up version. Has anyone got the ORIGINAL version, using 'Maharishi' insteand of 'Sexy Sadie'?
Supposedly he did, but it was filled with dirty lyrics. Paul had to help him change the words. That's the famous R-rated version which bootleggers never found.
I guess you want to say that with "Sexy Sadie" the Maharishi himself was meant - well, then you are not alone.
Also interesting: Staying in that Ashram in India, it was the depressive sister of Mia Farrow, whom they called "Dear Prudence" - she didn´t want to come out to play.
@klinsmeier No,no,no,no. Now think back...1969. "Sexy Sadie"? Helter Skelter? "Susan Sexy Sadie Atkins"? This song isn't about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Its about one of the people who committed one of the most brutal crimes in American history.
Except the White Album was released in 1968, and the Manson murders happened in 1969. So unless you're an unhinged lunatic like Manson himself, this song is about the Maharishi.
No, actually on the ranch she was given that name "Sexy Sadie", because they were fan's of the Beatles. After the crimes she was more associated to that particular name. That song inspired that name. Then the song was given a new meaning, thanks to them.
Also...what was Manson guilty for?Serious question.
No, I'm correct. On the ranch she was given the nickname "Sexy Sadie" Glutz. As time went on after the murder's, the song was indeed given a new meaning.
Their not even the "Manson murder's", honestly they should be only known as "Murder's", because Manson had nothing to do with the murder's.
you sir, are correct. SexySadie was written about Susan Atkins.
she broke the rules by commiting the murders & made a fool of everyone by "the family" being all about peace, love & truth, but her doing what she did.
@ChinoRdrgz: The song was written about the Maharishi. John said he wanted to actually sing 'maharishi, what have you done ?' cos he was letching after the girls in the camp, but John said
he pulled out in the end and disguised it with Sexie Sadie instead. It was written before anyone knew the existence of Susan Atkins (or Manson)
The song was written by john. The main reason they left India was because, the maharishi supposedly had some plan to trick a girl or 2 into sleeping with him. The beatles, mainly george, found out and said he wanted to leave cause the maharishi was a fake and made a fool out of them.
So when it came time to confront him, John did the dirty work. On the flight back, John wrote Sexy sadie, at the time it was called maharishi. When it came time to record it, the record lable said, thats to blunt, people will recieve it negatively. So John changed the title from Maharishi to Sexy sadie....
@m2frogger John was very skeptical of the Marahashi and wasn't too impressed when he allegedly made advances on a lady that was at the camp. I think it would be more correct to say that George liked him. Ringo left early because he thought it was a load of crap.
this song is about the goddess Isis

Wow, little did John know how overused that chord progression in the chorus would be.

Again original meaning. There is another meaning to it, which was given to the song later on.
Second that's complete bullshit anyway. The Maharishi was not a fraud in anyway.

I wonder if George had a problem with this song, cause he was really involved in the Indian culture and this was an attack on the Maharishi
